1 Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing Introduction to Semester 1 NR Professionalism for Nursing in Health Care Course Coordinator: Linda Gerson, PhD, RN Professionalism for Nursing in Health Care is a 2 - credit theory course. This course explores the profession of nursing, healthcare competencies, including quality and safety education for nurses; the healthcare delivery system and healthcare financing; ethics, interprofessional education, and health disparities and social determinants of health. When will the course meet for the first time? Section 0101 Friday, January 22, :00am-11:50am in Room 305 Section 0201 Thursday, January 21, :30pm-3:20pm in Room 305 Required Materials: American Nurses Association Guide to Code of Ethics for Nurses with Interpretive Statements (2015). The ANA Code of Ethics is the only required book and can be purchased separately from Matthews Medical Book Center or the ANA, or you may wish to purchase the ANA Essentials of Nursing Package, which includes the ANA Code of Ethics. The other 2 books in the Essentials package are recommended, not required. Register for the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) open school (IHI.org). In class you will be directed to the free courses you will be taking. *You may purchase the ANA Essentials of Nursing Package from the Matthews Medical Bookstore.
2 NR FOUNDATIONS OF NURSING PRACTICE Course Coordinators: Kathryn Kushto- Reese MS RN and Shari Lynn MSN RN Foundations of Nursing Practice is a 3 credit course. Two credits of didactic and one credit of lab. In this course you will learn the principles for all of your basic psychomotor skills and how to perform these skills in the laboratory setting. This course is a foundation and building block for your future clinical courses and for your nursing career. Where will the course meet? This course will meet in Rooms 9&10 for class (in lower level of SON). Labs are on 2 nd floor, 204, 205, and 212. Your lab room and lab instructor will be posted on Blackboard. For the first day of Foundations On Wednesday, January 20, in the afternoon, in place of your regular lab time, section 0101 and 0201 COMBINED, will meet from 3:30p 5:20p for orientation in room 202. Note the change on class schedule. Follow class schedule on Blackboard for usual class/lab times and additional changes. Required textbooks: Craven, R.F. and Hirnle, CJ. Foundations of Nursing Practice, student lab manual. How to prepare for the first day of class (Monday, January 25) See Blackboard NR for orientation materials and week 1 content. Print PDF power point slides if you want to have them for class note taking or bring your lap top to class. Review chapters 17,34 (pp ), 22(pp ) & 24 of Craven and Hirnle. Before the first lab (Wednesday, January 27), review lab manual vital signs content. Bring your lab manual to each lab. Answer the lab question also known as boarding pass" for your first lab on vital signs. See blackboard. Bring your stethoscope, blood pressure cuff and watch with a second hand. Wear your school uniform.
