Objectives Describe trend (Bar Coded Medication Administration (BCMA)) Describe and evaluate the hardware and software utilized with this trend. Describe and evaluate the information system used with this trend. Assess the role and functions of the nurse informaticist when working with this trend. Examine related legal/ethical issues. Discuss Advantages/Disadvantages from nursing perspective.
Bar Coded Medication Administration Out with the old and in with the new!
A system used to reduce medication errors. A Barcode reader scans the medication and confirms it with the correct patient. Enforces the 5 Rights of medication administration. Used highly among Veteran Administration Hospitals.
Bar Coded Medication Administration
Hardware Consist of a handheld scanning device. Connects to a wireless mobile computer and cart. The system can communicate with other information systems in the facility. It records transactions and stores other medical information. Or some systems utilize a barcode scanner enabled Palm PDA to scan, confirm, and store medication transaction information.
