1 Research funding & grant opportunities NIHR - Programme Development Grants Programme Development Grants are designed to increase the rate and number of successful applications for a full Programme Grant. They are a response to an observation that some otherwise very promising applications had been unsuccessful because parts of the proposed programme were considered to be too insecure and hence would be too risky for a three to five year grant. See here for more information - NIHR HTA Programme Clinical Evaluation and Trails Grants The HTA programme commissions research in three different ways: through the commissioned funding stream which advertises calls for research proposals that address specific topics, by advertising special calls for research proposals that address themed areas, and by funding HTA clinical trials and evaluation studies that are proposed directly by researchers Grants are made for evaluation studies as well as the normal clinical trials on topics proposed directly by researchers. This call is now open and proposals can be submitted on an ongoing basis. Proposals received by 1pm on 2nd May 2012 and deemed within remit will be assessed for their importance to the NHS in July and September Applicants will be advised of the status of their application by the beginning of October For more information please see: NIHR Antimicrobial Resistance Themed Call The NIHR Antimicrobial Resistance themed call is for research into the evaluation of public health measures, health care interventions and health services to reduce the development and spread of antimicrobial resistance and consequent morbidity. This call for research is part of a coordinated response by the NIHR to the publication of the 2nd volume of the 2011 Annual Report of the Chief Medical Officer: Infections and the rise of antimicrobial resistance. The PDG Programme will be participating in this call for research. You will be able to apply through Competition 11 which will open on 10 December Further information on this call is available online at Other NIHR Research programmes are available here: spx AMS Starter Grants for Clinical Lecturers 1
2 A 5million grant scheme which aims to provide modest starter funds to enable research active Clinical Lecturers to pursue their research work, gather preliminary data and so further strengthen their applications for longer-term fellowships and funding. The scheme will fund research work of only the very highest quality and where it is clearly demonstrated that the findings will inform the applicant s future career aspirations and bids for larger scale fellowships. The maximum grant available is 30,000 and this can be spread over two years to contribute towards new and directly incurred research costs such as consumables and equipment. Closing date: There are two application deadlines per year, March (for a June panel) and September (for a December panel. For further information see: Advancement of Research for Myopathies 1) Primary Research Grants: To advance areas of scientific and medical knowledge that could improve understanding of the causes of disease or assist in developing strategies for treatment 2) Research Development: To expand the number of scientists conducting meritorious biomedical research in an attempt to significantly advance the rate of scientific discovery towards developing a treatment for IBM2 (HIBM). Interested scientists may come from among investigators who may be part of a team in the laboratory of a senior investigator under whose guidance the researcher will be given flexibility to work independently or as part of a collaborative effort. 3) Special Research: To encourage scientific meetings for researchers to exchange ideas and to establish collaborations. The ARM Grants Award Program is temporarily on-hold due to economic uncertainties. The web site advises to check back again next season for further updates. See here for more information - Alzheimer's Society The objective of Alzheimer's Society Project Grants is to provide funding for significant research projects in the areas of cause, cure, care or prevention of dementia.
