First Aid Policy 1
Policy Statement The Principal and Board of Governors of E-Spired accept their responsibility under the Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations 1981 and acknowledge the importance of providing First Aid for employees, children and visitors within the School. The staff of E-Spired recognise their statutory duty to comply with the Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations 2013 and agree to abide by the procedure for reporting accidents. Signed Mark Hudson (Principal) Date 1 st September 2017 Signed Jacqueline Brown (Chairperson of Board of Governors) 2
Introduction First Aid is the initial assistance or treatment given to someone who is injured or suddenly taken ill (The Joint First Aid Manual 8 th Edition). Staff administering First Aid should seek to assess the situation, protect themselves and the casualty from further danger, deal with any life-threatening condition and where necessary obtain medical assistance or refer the casualty to hospital as quickly as possible. Statement of First Aid Provision The School s arrangements for providing First Aid will:- Place a duty on the Principal and Board of Governors to approve, implement and review the First Aid policy; Place individual duties on all employees; Report and record accidents using the on-line RIDDOR database on the HSE (Health and Safety Executive) website ; Record all occasions when First Aid is administered to employees, students and visitors. Provide equipment and materials to provide First Aid treatment; Make arrangements via approved providers (such as St. John s) to provide First Aid training to employees, maintain records of training and review annually; Establish a procedure for managing accidents in school which require First Aid treatment; Provide information to employees on the arrangements for First Aid; Undertake a risk assessment of the First Aid requirements of the School and review on a regular basis; Use the information from the risk assessment of First Aid to determine the number and level of trained staff and also any additional requirements (eg specialised training for children with particular medical needs); Notify parent/guardian that first aid treatment was given to the child. 3
Arrangements for First Aid The School will provide materials and equipment and facilities to provide First Aid. The location of the First Aid Kit in the School is:- The reception areas on the ground floor. A standard First Aid Kit will contain the following items: Leaflet giving general advice on First Aid 20 individually wrapped sterile adhesive dressings assorted sizes 4 triangular bandages 2 sterile eye pads 6 safety pins 6 medium wound dressings 2 large wound dressings 3 extra-large wound dressings 1 pair of disposable gloves The contents of the Kits will be checked on a regular basis by First Aider, Tamika Da Conceicao or Joylette Hudson, Deputy / Operations Director. The School First Aider(s) is: Tamika Conceicao. All staff are trained in First Aid receiving training from TutorCare on 1 st September All staff certificated for three years. Before undertaking any off-site activities, the level of first aid provision will be assessed by the First Aider and at least one First Aid Kit will be taken along. Information on First Aid Arrangements The Principal will inform all employees at the school of the following:- The arrangements for recording and reporting of accidents; The arrangements for First Aid; Those employees who are qualified First Aiders; The location of the First Aid Kit. 4
In addition the Principal will ensure that signs are displayed throughout the School providing the following information:- The names of employees with First Aid qualifications; Location of the First Aid Box. All members of staff will be made aware of the School s First Aid policy. No member of staff should attempt to give First Aid unless they have been trained. Accommodation Whilst medication can be administered in the front office, the staff and disabled toilet is the designated First Aid room as it has a sink and toilet facilities. Basic hygiene procedures If a student has an accident, which results in bleeding or vomiting, the following procedures will be followed: Wear disposable gloves Open cuts and sores will be covered with the appropriate dressings taking note of any allergies to plasters etc Wash the wound with water Wrap blood stained tissues in a plastic bag and dispose of separately in the outdoor waste bin Wash blood splashes off the skin with warm soapy water or out of eyes with water Cloths, soft toys or soft furnishings stained by body fluids will be washed by hand using hot water and detergent or in the hot water cycle in a washing machine. Emergency Services It is the decision of the First Aider and Principal or suitably trained member of staff to elect to call the emergency services. They will follow these guidelines: An ambulance must be called for: A wound where blood flow cannot be stemmed A severe head injury (especially if resulting in loss of consciousness) 5
Hyperventilation lasting more than 10 minutes An epileptic seizure that continues for longer than is normal for the individual student An allergic reaction that has resulted in an Epi-pen being used An asthma attack where breathing is severely compromised An ambulance may be called for: Any suspected fracture A severe allergic reaction Open wounds requiring stitches If in any doubt about the patient s safety The First Aider will ensure that a student who is sent to hospital by ambulance has some or all of the following: Is accompanied in the ambulance at the request of paramedics. Is followed to hospital by a member of staff to act in loco parentis if a relative cannot be contacted. Is met at hospital by a relative. The First Aider need not be the member of staff that is sent to accompany the casualty to hospital; however, an appropriate person should be sent. Accidents involving bumps to a Student s head The consequence of an injury from an accident involving a bump or blow to a student s head is not always evident immediately and the effects may only become noticeable after a period of time. Where emergency treatment is not required a Head Bump letter will be sent home to the parent/guardian. Transport to hospital or home The Principal will determine the appropriate action to be taken in each case. Where the injury requires urgent medical attention, an ambulance will be called and the student s parent or guardian will be notified. If hospital treatment is required, then the student s 6
parent/guardian will be called for them to take over responsibility. If no contact can be made with parent/guardian or other designated emergency contacts then the Principal may decide to transport the student to the hospital. Where the Principal makes arrangements for transporting a student then the following points will be adhered to:- Only staff cars insured to cover such transportation will be used; No individual member of staff will be alone with the student in a vehicle; A second member of staff will be present to provide supervision of the injured student. Date of policy: 1 st September 2017 Signed: Mark Hudson, Principal and CEO Review Date: 1 st September
