2 "Round Oak School is a good school with outstanding behaviour and safety OFSTED 2013" FIRST AID POLICY The first aid provision at Round Oak School and Holloway Farm has being calculated as per Warwickshire County Council First Aid Assessment Guide criteria. PHILOSOPHY We are committed to ensuring the optimum care for all people at Round Oak School. We will ensure that hurt and injured people receive first aid, and follow up medical care as necessary, in the swiftest possible manner. POLICY Parents will always be informed of any accident or injury to their child by the first aider who attended to their child. Parents will be given the option of collecting their child from school post injury. In all cases the initial first aider who provided the treatment will assess the child later in the day before going home. In some cases a first aider may require a second opinion, whereby a second first aider will be called. When an injury is located in a sensitive area a second first aider will always be present. In every case of a significant head injury, or if pupil has lost consciousness a visit to the casualty department will be made and parents informed. After such injury, follow up medical advice will be recorded on the appropriate Warwickshire County Council documentation (Accident/Incident/Near Miss Report Form). Following all head injuries a head injury advice form will be given to parents, and all relevant individuals (class staff, transport, escort staff etc) will be informed, to ensure the child is monitored and kept safe. MEDICAL INFORMATION Medical snap shots will be collated by the school nurse in collaboration with the key stage leaders. An updated list will be distributed to all staff at the start of the academic year. All information will be kept in accordance with the data protection laws.

3 EPILEPSY Pupils who have epilepsy may need to have Rectal / Buccal medication, this can only be administered by staff that have completed and passed the relevant training. All compencies are child specific; therefore training competencies can not be transferred from child to child. All children who require emergency medication to control their seizures MUST be escorted around the school and off site by a member of staff, who is proficient and competent in recognising, monitoring and administering the appropriate medication. All competent staff MUST ensure that the medication is available in school / offsite, and ensure that it is fit for purpose (medication is in date, packaging / liquid intact, prescription label identifying the child s name, medication and administration instructions). Expiry dates must be checked to ensure that the medication is in date, any expired medication must be sent home via the Medication in / out Round Oak School system (signed over to escort / parent), and new medication must be requested. Individual epilepsy administration protocols must be adhered, and all seizures must be recorded on the appropriate documentation (Reports of Seizures in School). Photocopies must be taken for pupil file, seizure record file and parents. In the event of an ambulance been called, another copy will be required, and parents informed via telephone. ASTHMATIC All pupils who require medical intervention to manage their asthma must have a written medical care plan outlining treatment required. All inhalers must have a prescription label stating child s name, medication and dose. Expiry dates must be checked to ensure that the inhaler is in date, any expired inhalers must be sent home via the Medication in / out Round Oak School system (signed over to escort / parent), and new inhaler requested. All pupils where able will be encouraged to carry their inhalers with them at all times. It is however the class team / support staff s responsibility to ensure that the pupil has their inhaler with them, especially if going off site or engaging in strenuous or sporty activity. If the child does not have their inhaler with them it is the responsibility of the class team to decide whether the child can participate in the activity. Pupils who cannot manage to administer their own inhalers must have their inhaler kept in the medical cupboard in their classroom for staff to manage and administer. WHAT TO DO IF A PUPIL HAS AN ASTHMATIC ATTACK. Keep calm. Remove pupil from the trigger if possible. Encourage the pupil to sit up and slightly forward. DO NOT LIE them down. Help the pupil to take the recommended dose of their inhaler (SEE INDIVIDUAL PROTOCOL). Ensure upper body clothing is loosened if tight.

4 Reassure pupil. IF THERE IS NO IMPROVEMENT AFTER 5 MINUTES, OR SYMPTOMS GET WORSE CALL 999 ANAPHYLAXIS (See separate Anaphylaxis Protocol) Pupils, who are severely allergic to various products, will have an individual protocol and prescribed medication (i.e. Epipen) to counteract the reaction. This can only be administered by staff that have completed and passed the relevant training. All competent staff MUST ensure that the Epipen is available in school / offsite, and ensure that it is fit for purpose (medication is in date, packaging is intact, prescription label identifying the child s name, medication and administration instructions). Following an allergic reaction, the relevant documentation will be completed and parents informed. GENERAL FIRST AID ISSUES Wounds will be bathed with water and left to the air unless the injured part is too large. In this case, a non-stick, hypoallergenic dressing or plaster will be applied. PLEASE CHECK ALLERGY LIST before applying any plasters. In the case of injuries such as minor grazes or bruising, any member of staff may administer treatment such as would be given by a caring parent. The administering first aider will call parents to notify them of injury and giving them the option of collecting their child before the end of the school day. The initial first aider will also check the injured child again prior to them going home, to reassess their injuries. A minor injury form will be completed unless otherwise requested. Any first aider who issues a disposable icepack must ensure that they safely dispose of the pack after use in normal household waste which cannot be accessed by pupil s (i.e. black bin bag in reception office). There will only be two main points to access First Aid supplies within school. Reception area where general stock and a portable first aid box is available. The second point is the Medical / Physiotherapy room where extra supplies can be located. The aim of having only two locations is to ensure that first aid supplies are replenished regularly, and that they are in date. Individual first aiders may want to keep their classroom first aid boxes, this however will be their responsibility to ensure that they keep their first aid boxes stocked, replenished and in date.

5 Additional first aid boxes will still be kept on the mini-buses, and bum bags with first aid supplies will still be available for offsite activities. It will be the responsibility of the staff members taking pupils off site to ensure that they replenish any stock they use, thereby ensuring that the bum bag is stocked for the next off site trip. The common room and food technology rooms will still have their individual first aid boxes with specialist first aid equipment (blue plasters and burn dressings). If you have any questions regarding the changes to the first aid boxes within school, please do not hesitate to contact me. Each classroom has a basic first aid kit with dressings, gloves, steripods, plasters, cleansing wipes, ice packs etc. A full first aid kit will be maintained in the minibuses, technology room, food technology, science room, administration office and a sports bag and bum bags for offsite activities. RECORD KEEPING After administering first aid or administering any form of medication, staff will fill in the appropriate forms (Medication administration, Minor injury or Warwick County Council Accident/Incident/Near Miss Report Form). All records must be completed at the time of administration / accident or as soon as possible. All records must be written in dark permanent ink, to aid photocopying. All medication that is brought into school must be brought into school by an adult (parent / escort), and handed over to a member of staff, whereby both parties sign the Medication in / out of Round Oak School form. Any discrepancies must be reported immediately to a senior member of staff for further investigation. MONITORING THE POLICY There will be a designated person to oversee implementation of the policy and maintence of medical supplies. Individual first aid kits and medication for pupils in each class will be the responsibility of a named TA within each class team. The current first aiders will meet annually to monitor the implementation of the policy. They will pass on any concerns they may have to the Head Teacher. The first aid policy should be visited at a full staff meeting annually and will be formally reviewed every three years in line with whole school policy review. The Head and the Leadership Team may consult with the School Health Advisor over any unresolved issues.
