5 EKITA board membership nomination Personal statement To whom it may concern, With this letter I would like to nominate myself for a position as a Board member of EKITA. As a transplant surgeon and head of the kidney transplant program in the Erasmus Medical Center Rotterdam in the Netherlands I have firsthand experience in the challenges and requirements to be faced in kidney transplantation today. The Erasmus Medical Center Rotterdam is one of the largest live donor nephrectomy centers of Europe, with many years of experience in training visiting surgeons. Recently our department has been certified as an official UEMS Fellowship training center for transplantation. The necessity for advanced training and expert level information transfer has become clear on many occasions. Optimizing patient care and expanding the knowledge of donation and transplantation amongst the physicians of Europe, and outside its borders have always my passion. Education of the younger generation and modernizing existing practices are key to keeping kidney transplantation safe and available to as many patients as possible. With this in mind, we have set up a customized training program. For surgeons starting with live donation we have the successful, ESOT endorsed LIDO course. If more help is required, a tailor made educational program will be set up, including surgical assistance
6 for a couple of weeks in their own hospital. For the more experienced surgeons, I have hosted a masterclass in live donor nephrectomy, based in our hospital, Where difficult cases can be discussed and expert opinion can be shared. I have been a part of European funded projects to expand knowledge about live donation and kidney transplantation; Both ESOT or EKITA were not informed or present in these initiatives. It would be invaluable if better coordination of European efforts could be channeled through ESOT and EKITA. When elected as a board member of EKITA, I would like to focus on expanding the opportunities for training, and increase European collaboration in kidney transplantation education, creating a platform for exchange of evidence based clinical knowledge and technical assistance, and general awareness. If this sounds like a good plan, vote for me.
