Gabriel Chapter Quarterly Newsletter Message from the Chapter President Volume 2018, Issue 2 Dear Gabriel Chapter and AFA Members and Friends, As you will see in this newsletter, your Chapter has been busy and we continue to run many programs and events to achieve the mission of the AFA to EDUCATE, ADVOCATE, and SUPPORT. We are now entering the summer months and have several Chapter and National events coming up here in the National Capital Region, including the AFA National Convention, the AFA Field Awards Dinner, the AFA Air Space and Cyber Conference, the AFA Air Force Anniversary Dinner and the AFA Outstanding Airmen of the Year Dinner, all in September. If you have never attended these events, I recommend that you consider attending. As this Newsletter goes to press we have been notified that the Gabriel Chapter was selected for AFA National Awards: the AFA Exceptional Service Award for Overall Programming, the AFA Exceptional Service Award for Communications and an AFA Aerospace Education Achievement Award. Two of our elected officers will be receiving AFA Medals of Merit and two elected officers will be receiving AFA Individual Exceptional Service Awards. These awards will be presented at the AFA Field Awards Dinner on September 15th. I ask that you please consider how you can serve the Chapter, by attending an event or helping at one of many program activities we have going on in the National Capital Region. You can also help with recruiting, by asking a friend or coworker to join AFA. How many of us have friends or co-workers, who are on active duty in the Air Force, in the Air National Guard, the Air Force Reserve, are an Air Force Civilian employee, contractor, retiree, or veteran. Ask them if they are in AFA. If they aren t a member, ask them to please consider joining us. There has never been a better time to join our Air Force Association. As the AFA two-year term is coming to an end, we have a great slate of nominees to be the elected officers for October 2018 to September 2020 term. Please vote and submit your vote via the instructions in this newsletter. We also still have vacancies on our executive committee (EXCOM) and always can use help on our committees. Many hands make light work. Our ability to serve the chapter membership and the goals of the Association are only as great as those who volunteer. In addition, to our Chapter Officers and volunteers, I would like to thank our Community Partners and Corporate Sponsors, who continue to provide the financial support that allows us to run our many programs supporting the total Air Force family and aerospace education here in Northern Virginia. 3 Gabriel AFA Community Partner Program During these times of constrained resources and new emerging threats, our Air Force needs the Air Force Association to educate the public on the importance of air power and strong national defense. One of your AFA tools to help spread the message is the Community Partner Program. I strongly encourage each AFA Gabriel Chapter member help the Chapter actively recruit new Community Partners. As a chapter member you do business in the local community. Identify those businesses that you support and ask them to become a community partner with the Gabriel Chapter. 4 Chapter Activities Doolittle Ops Group Commander Briefs Gabriel Membership Luncheon on Anniversary of Historic Raid on Tokyo The April Membership Meeting of the AFA Gabriel Chapter was held on April 18, 2018 at the Ciao Osteria Restaurant in Centreville, VA. Our guest speaker was Colonel David Henshaw, who is the Current Operations Division Chief at ISR Operations, Warfighter Support, Office of the Undersecretary of Defense - Intelligence (OUSD(I)). Colonel Henshaw is responsible for monitoring, enabling and ensuring effective global ISR operations, providing oversight of related policies and directives, and promoting international cooperation through burden sharing and interoperability of ISR capabilities with our mission partners. Colonel Henshaw recently commanded the 432 nd Attack Squadron at Ellsworth AFB, South Dakota and was Deputy Commander of the 432 nd Operation Group. The squadron is part of the 28 th Bomb Wing, and is a sister to the 34 th Bomb Squadron the Doolittle Raiders. Fittingly, this commander of the Doolittle Ops Group was briefing us on the 76 th anniversary of the Doolittle Raid on Tokyo. Saturday, April 18, 1942, was the first air operation to strike the Japanese Home Islands. Sixteen B-25B Mitchell medium bombers launched from the US Navy s aircraft carrier the USS Hornet to attack the Japanese capital Tokyo and other places on the island of Honshu during World War II. The raid demonstrated that the Japanese mainland was vulnerable to American air attack, served as retaliation for the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, and provided an important boost to American morale. The raid was planned and led by Lieutenant Colonel James "Jimmy" Doolittle of the United States Army Air Forces. Doolittle went on to earn four stars and became the founder and first president of the Air Force Association. Colonel Henshaw riveted the attention of chapter members in attendance with his description of Predator and Reaper attacks on ISIS leadership and the operational effect provided by persistent surveillance for remotely piloted ISR platforms. Colonel Dave Henshaw enjoys the atmosphere at the Gabriel Community Partne, Ciao Osteria Restaurant in Centreville, Virginia. Colonel Henshaw shared the callenges and success of the remotely piloted aircraft teams supporting operations against Syria and ISIS. Chapter President Joe Burke presented Colonel Henshaw with a Gabriel Chapter challenge coin, in appreciation for his frank and informative presentation. Women Pilots from WW II Honored at Memorial Day Commemoration Nick Abate, Vice President of AFA s Central East Region joined Joe Burke, Gabriel Chapter President and his wife Ann Burke, to attend the Memorial Day Commemoration at the Air Force Memorial on May 28, This year at the annual event commemorating veterans who gave the last full measure in service to the nation, a special ceremony recognized the contributions of World War II Women Air Force Service Pilots (WASPS), the courage and commitment of the USAAF Tuskegee Airmen and also paid tribute to the women who made history on the Home Front during WWII by taking on the jobs vacated by the men who went into service, collectively referred to as "Rosie the Riveter. A group of Rosie s joined us at the Air Force Memorial event, including America's Longest Working Rosie, Elinor Otto, 98. Another Rosie, Ada Wyn Parker, 95, 4 of 22

5 became one of the first women to step forward to take a defense job a few days after the attacks on Pearl Harbor, when she was only 17. Display personal attributes such as initiative, judgment, and self-confidence. Display a courteous demeanor Gabriel Chapter First Couple Joe and Ann Burke with Elinor Otto "America's Longest Working Rosie the Riveter" helping to keep the Spirit of '45 alive. Elinor tells us she is "Still going great at 98!" The tremendous contributions of these members of the Greatest Generation help us appreciate the freedoms we too often take for granted and the personal sacrifices that were made to preserve those freedoms. We salute our veterans and their families! Cadet Brandon Lewis Receives Battlefield High School Air Force Association Award On April 30, 2018, Gabriel Chapter Vice President Mike Winters presented the AFA Cadet of the Year award to Cadet 2Lt Brandon Lewis, at the Battlefield High School AFJROTC Spring Awards Ceremony, in Haymarket, Virginia. Aerospace Studies Instructors Colonel (ret) Dan Vasenko and Senior Master Sergeant (ret) David Schuler invited the Gabriel Chapter to present the award. The Air Force Association Award is the highest award presented to AFJROTC cadets. This AFA-sponsored award consists of a medal and ribbon and is presented annually at each unit to the outstanding third-year cadet. The award recipient must possess the following personal characteristics and achieves these eligibility criteria: Positive academic and military attitude Outstanding personal appearance Chapter Vice President Mike Winters presents Cadet 2Lt Brandon Lewis with with the Air Force Association Award and a Gabriel Chapter Challenge Coin at the Spring AFJROTC Awards Ceremony at Battlefield High School. Air Staff Chief of Nuclear Command and Control Speaks at Gabriel Chapter May Luncheon The Gabriel Chapter s Monthly Lunch Meeting was held May 9 th at Maggiano's Little Italy Restaurant in McLean, VA. Our guest speaker was Colonel Todd A. Sriver, who is the Chief of the Nuclear Command, Control, and Communications (NC3) Division, HQ USAF, Deputy Chief of Staff for Strategic Deterrence and Nuclear Integration. Colonel Sriver leads a division of 20 personnel responsible for developing NC3 plans and policies, and advocating and integrating NC3 sustainment, modernization, and recapitalization efforts to ensure credible and reliable NC3 capabilities for the President of the United States, national leadership, Combatant Commands, and USAF nuclear forces. Thirty chapter members and Chapter Sponsors attended the presentation in which Colonel Sriver laid out the Air Force s challenges and investment priorities for replacing aging equipment and modernizing the NC3 infrastructure. Some systems, he noted, have not been updated in more than 30 years. 5 of 22

6 In addition to the presentation from Colonel Sriver, Heather Penney, representing Peter Huessey and the Mitchell Insititute for Aerospace Studies gave an update on Huessey s Statregic Deterrence breakfast series and other outstanding programs. Heather did a great job of explaining the different Mitchell Institute programs, including the papers and the publications the Mitchell Institute team has developed and brought some along for our members. A number of the publications were taken home by our members, including our speaker, Colonel Todd Sriver from AF/A10. Colonel Todd Sriver presented an overview of Air Force Nuclear Command and Control modernization priorities. Improving the strategic deterrence capabilities of the United States is critical in this unsettled period of history. Heather Penney is Senior Resident Fellow. Penney at the AFA s Mitchell Institute for Aerospace Studies, and is responsible for conducting in-depth research on cutting-edge defense policy with a focus on the leverage aerospace power affords. Penney is well known for her service on 9/11/2001, Penney is a twotour combat veteran, having flown the F-16C for more than a decade in the D.C. Air National Guard. She has flown Special Airlift Missions in the Gulfstream G100, and served in the Air Force Reserve in the National Military Command Center. Penney is also a distinguished speaker who lectures extensively on subjects such as Air Force capabilities and force structure; organizational command and control; reforming the defense personnel system; and other defense policy issues to a broad number of organizations, universities, and military institutions. Burke noted that the efforts of the Mitchell Institute are the reason General Hap Arnold asked General Doolittle to setup the AFA in Gabriel Chapter Hosts Virginia AFA State Convention and EXCOM Meeting On Saturday, 16 June 2018, the Gabriel Chapter played host to the Virgina AFA Executive Committee and Chapter Presidents from across the Commonwealth of Virginia. Each quarter a different Chapter in the Virginia AFA hosts the State EXCOM meeting and the Gabriel Chapter was delighted to host the 2 nd Quarter 2018 event. The site of the Meetign and Conventionwas the Hyatt Regencey Dulles in Herndon, Virginia. More than 30 State EXCOM members attended the business meeting and 55 Chapter members and guests people attended the Dinner and Chapter Awards Banquet Saturday evening The business meeting started at 0800 on Saturday and ran into the late afternoon. As this was the second quarter meeting, according to the Virginai AFA Constitution, this was also the State Convention, which is scheduled each calendar year between April and June. During the State Convention, in addition to regular Virgina AFA business: Elections are held to determine the officers (President, Executive Vice-President, Secretary, and Treasurer) for the coming year. 6 of 22

7 All state AFA members are invited to attend the State Convention (all chapters; not just hosting chapter members). The Saturday luncheon includes the awards ceremony for State awards. The Hospitality Suite is a social tradition at State meetings and encouraged by the State Leadership to enhance networking and collaboration. The Host Chapter is responsible to plan and organize the Hospitality Suite and the Gabriel Chapter did not disappoint. Heather and Tony Celano, Sam Shelton, Justin Thomas, and Jack Diamond entertained guests from across Virginia, with a variety of sweet and savory snacks and plentiful libations. The suite is opened at 1600 on both Friday and Saturday of a meeting weekend and was opned until after 2300 each night. Joint Staff Deputy Director for Requirements Speaks at Gabriel Chapter Annual Awards Banquet The 2018 AFA Gabriel Chapter Annual Awards Banquet was held in conjunction with the Quarterly Virginia AFA EXCOM Meeting and State Convention at the Hyatt Regency - Dulles in Herndon, VA. A three course dinner was served with a choice of chicken or steak for more than 50 Chapter Members and guests. The guest speaker was Major General David A Krumm, who is the Deputy Director of Requirements, Joint Staff, the Pentagon, Washington, D.C. He is responsible for assisting the Chairman of the JCS in identifying, assessing and approving joint military requirements to meet the national security strategy; and ensuring the consideration of trade-offs between cost, schedule, and performance objectives for those requirements. In this role, he orchestrates Joint Staff support of the capabilities development process through the Joint Capabilities Integration and Development System. He also oversees the validation of joint urgent operational needs leading to the fielding of rapid solutions for combatant commanders. Additionally, as the Chair of the Force Application Functional Capabilities Board, he oversees and advocates for changes to the maneuver and engagement capabilities of the Force Application Joint Capability Area. Maj Gen Krumm entered the Air Force as a distinguished graduate of the ROTC program at Auburn University. He has served in a variety of flying, staff and command assignments and has commanded at the flight, squadron and wing level. During his career, he flew combat missions in support of Operation Southern Watch. The general is a graduate of the U.S. Air Force Weapons School and a command Major General David A Krumm, USAF, is the Deputy Director of Requirements, Joint Staff. His highly personal presentation on Maintaining Air Dominance was the highlight of the Chapter s Annual Awards Banquet. pilot with more than 3,000 hours. He was recently selected to return to the Air Staff as assigned as Director, Strategic Plans, Deputy Chief of Staff for Strategic Plans and Requirements, Headquarters U.S. Air Force, Pentagon, Washington, D.C. As a pilot of both the F-22 and F-15C, General Krumm spoke authoritatively about the challenges to achieving and maintaining American Air Dominance while facing new threats from old adversaries and addressing the impact of emerging technologies. In his position as Deputy Director of Joint 7 of 22

8 Requirements and his new posituion as Air Staff Director of Strategic Plans, our Air Force could not be in better hands. Chapte President Joe Burke thanked Maj gemn Krumm for his exciting and throught provoking presentaion. He presented the general with a Chapter Challenge coin and Ann Burke presented Lisa Krumm with a display of fresh cut flowers. Maj Gen Krumm was gracious enough to help present awards to Gabriel Chapter Volunteers and to the 2018 Chapter Teachers of the Year. Overall it was a delightful and exciting evening. Virgina AFA President Ken Spencer and Vice President Linda McMahon congratulated the Chapter s leadership for the successful event, Gabriel team s performance was outstanding! Jack Diamond Recognized as 2018 Member of the Year by Both the Gabriel Chapter and Virginia AFA At our Chapter Awards Banquet in June, Jack Diamond, Gabriel Chapter Secretary and Communications Team Leader, was honored as the Gabriel Chapter Member of the Year. Jack Diamond is the 2018 Gabriel Chapter Member of the Year and the 2018 Virginia Air Force Association Member of the Year Chapter Secretary, Jack Diamond, organized advertising, disseminated notifications, and arranged registration for more than two dozen events for Chapter members from Gabriel and across Northern Virginia and the National Capital Region. He led the Gabriel Chapter Communications and Social Media team. In addition, he volunteered as a consultant and Beta Tester for the National AFA Salesforce business enterprise modernization effort. John has gone above and beyond in serving his Chapter, leading Chapter, State and National level programs of the Air Force Association. His efforts have produced national impact for the AFA. Jack coordinated communications activities with Gabriel VP for Chapter Events, completing all of the details for our outreach lunch events to bring senior field grade, general officers and SES level speakers serving in the Air Staff and Joint assignments to forums for AFA members, industry representatives, and the public to inform them about the Air Force mission, people, and challenges. These events have had National Advocacy and Education impact as AFA members, Hill staffers and industry leaders have flown into Northern Virginia from around the United States to attend these events. Working with the Chapter Web developer, John led the modernization of Gabriel Chapter website and working with the VP Communications, assured that the Chapter communications were timely and consistent across the Chapter s website, constant contact s, and social media on Facebook and LinkedIn. As Gabriel Chapter events attract a National following with more than 10,000 followers on their Facebook site, this provided National level impact for AFA Advocacy and Education. John worked communications for, and then worked on the Gabriel Chapter USO Care Package event on Veterans Day, which assembled thousands of USO Care Packages at the USO distribution center at Fort Belvoir, Virginia. He has also coordinated, attended and represented the Gabriel Chapter at the Cold War Museum Events co-hosted with Northern Shenandoah Chapter. As a retired Air Force communications/cyber operations officer and Gabriel Chapter Beta Tester of the new AFA Membership Systems, John provided significant review and input on the new system to the AFA Chief Information Officer 8 of 22

9 and our AFA National Beta Testing team. His efforts to promote the goals of the Association bring credit upon himself, the Gabriel Chapter, and the Air Force Association and distinguished himself as the Chapter Member of the Year. Jack s achievements were also recognized by a Gabriel Chapter Exceptional Service Award. Moreover, the Virginia State AFA recognized his Stat-wide impact and he was selected as the 2018 Virginia State AFA Member of the Year. Virginia AFA President, Ken Spencer, presented Jack with an AFA polo shirt in recognition of his selection as 2018 Member of the Year. Chapter Members Recognized with Chapter Exceptional Service Awards Several Gabriel Chapter members were recognized with Certificates for Exceptional Service to the Chapter and AFA. As Chapter Vice President for Veterans Affairs, Bob Austin directly contributed to the success of the Chapter in achieving the goals of the Air Force Association. He supported efforts such as Veterans Employment Boot Camp, fundraising for the AFA Wounded Airman program, and support for Airmen participating in National Warrior Games for disabled warriors that were instrumental to the Chapter s success. Moreover, he consistently and effectively coordinated Chapter activities with the Virginia AFA and other Veterans Service Organizations. His continued support and commitment to the Chapter and dedication to excellence deserve special recognition and appreciation from the Gabriel Chapter. Lieutenant General (retired) Michael Basla has been instrumental to the success of the Chapter through his advice, presence and unflagging support for Chapter activities. His support was critical to reenergizing our outreach to the leadership of the National Reconnaissance Office and he personally assisted the Chapter to expand our opportunities to support airmen and their families at the only active duty installation in our Chapter area of responsibility. As Chapter Webmaster, Filip DaSilva has been instrumental to executing our member communication strategy. Filip s service to the Chapter has been enduring, unfailingly exceptional, and uniformly praised. The Chapter website is a model of efficiency, innovation, and aesthetics. Filip s exceptional and unfailing service to the Chapter in maintaining the Chapter website and accounts have been the linchpin in our efforts to execute the mission of the organization. Information is the foundation of all that we do and Filip s selfless dedication, nearly always behind the scenes, brings credit upon himself, the Gabriel Chapter, and the Virginia Air Force Association. Gabriel Chapter VP for Veterans Affairs,Bob Austin, was recognized with a Chapter Excetional Service Award at the Chapter s Annual Awards Banquet. Chapter Vice President Michael Winters was recognized with a Chapter Exceptional Service Award. Mike also received the Virginia AFA President s Award in recognition of his volunteer efforts serving the Chapter, Virginia AFA, and the National Association During the past year, Regina M. (Gina) Giles has continued to work tirelessly to enhance Aerospace Education and Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) education in Northern Virginia. A former high school math teacher and Air Force officer, Gina s enthusiasm and dedication to education and advocacy for AF issues have been inspirational. Gina has worked closely with local schools, AFA, and the community to encourage our youth s capability in STEM. She encourages and coordinates 9 of 22

10 volunteers from the Chapter and the community to participate in STEM activities. Her invaluable efforts continue to contribute to the success of the Chapter and Virginia State AFA. Her efforts are singularly responsible for improving and elevating the effectiveness of the national goals of the Association. Lieutenant General (retired) Chuck Heflebower continues to support the Chapter through his advice, presence and unflagging support for Chapter activities. He is a strong supporter of STEM education, through Cyber Patriot, teacher of the year, and the CyberPatriot summer camp we sponsor each year. His advice and support of AFA recruiting and retention activities have contributed to a stronger and more representative Association. As Vice President for Government Affairs, Lee Rizzo has established himself as a key member of the Chapter Executive Council and has been instrumental to the success of the Chapter in our education and advocacy missions. Lee coordinated and led our attendance at a Veterans Coffee with U.S. Senators Mark Warner and Tim Kaine and a follow-up meeting on Capitol Hill with staff of Senator Warner. He coordinated with Government Relations leaders at other National Capitol Region Chapters, Virginia State AFA, and AFA National Headquarters to ensure that we were well coordinated in our message. Lee also supported other Chapter outreach activities such as the National Reconnaissance Office Annual Awards Ceremony. His efforts on behalf of the Chapter and the Air Force Association bring credit upon himself, the Gabriel Chapter, and the Virginia Air Force Association. Patrick Rocke s, service Chapter EXCOM Member has directly contributed to the success of the Chapter. His steady leadership, commitment, and support to the Chapter and the Association President and Chapter Council directly contributed to the Chapter s continued success and achievement. In December, Pat organized a Truck Crew for the annual Wreaths Across America event to show respect and to honor our veterans buried at Arlington National Cemetery. For the third year in a row, Pat was one of more than 50 crew chiefs for tractor trailers bringing wreaths to Arlington National Cemetery. Gabriel Chapter members joined volunteers, family and friends to distribute more than 250,000 wreaths on grave stones with a mission to Remember, Honor, and Teach. Pat s leadership, enthusiasm, and commitment to excellence on behalf of the Gabriel Chapter and the Air Force Association bring credit upon himself, the Gabriel Chapter, and the Virginia Air Force Association. Samantha Shelton s service as Vice President, Social Media has been instrumental to the success of the Chapter. She is singularly responsible for establishing and maintaining a Chapter presence on social media. Sam developed the Chapter s Facebook page, through which the Chapter advertises events and communicate the result of our professional development, education and social activities. The site has many friends, received numerous likes and is a new communications avenue to reach our members. Her commitment to the Chapter and Association, and support to the Chapter President and Chapter Council have been critical to achieving continued success in advancing the goals of the Chapter and the Association. Her relentless efforts on behalf of the Chapter and the Air Force Association bring credit upon herself, the Gabriel Chapter, and the Virginia Air Force Association. Gabriel Chapter VP for Communications, Sam Shelton was recogmnized with a Chapter Excetional Service Award. Sam also received a Virginia Special Achievement Award from Virginia AFA President Ken Spencer. Brad Wilkins continued to serve the Gabriel Chapter as CyberPatriot mentor and member of the Chapter Executive Council, while serving as the Virginia State AFA Vice President for Aerospace Education. His selfless dedication to Aerospace Education, in particular his outreach to the Chantilly High School Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps Programs and leadership of the Chapter s sponsorship of 10 of 22

11 CyberPatriot teams and participation in the annual Science Fairs at Chantilly Academy, deserve special recognition. Brad has contributed exceptional service to the chapter and Association by organizing chapter support for CyberPatriot, expanding the Chapter s support to high schools throughout the area, serving as a CyberPatriot team technical mentor, and contributing to the Association s Development and Strategy Committees as a 2015 Emerging Leader. His efforts to promote the Aerospace Education goals of the Association bring credit upon himself, the Gabriel Chapter, and the Air Force Association. As Chapter Vice President, Michael Winters has been instrumental in fulfilling the Association goals. Gabriel Chapter Recognizes Teachers of the Year As we have for the last several years, the Gabriel Chapter recognized two outstanding educators for their contributions to science and math education that contribute to the AFA s Aerospace Education mission and improve the Math and Science aptitude and abilities of our young people. Each of our Teachers of the Year received a pin recognizing their selection and a folio embossed with the AFA logo. Karen Molloy was selected as the Gabriel Teacher of the Year and received a check for $250 from the Chapter, which was matched by a $50 grant for the Virginia AFA and a $250 grant from AFA National Headquarters. Ms. Molloy is a Chemistry teacher and Chair of the Science Department at Chantilly High School in Chantilly, Virginia. Ms. Molloy was honored in person the following evening at the Gabriel Chapter Annual Award Banquet. committed proponent of for transforming a high school into a community center for attracting and mentoring students to pursue careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). Karen s vision was realized this year when she took the final steps in her long-range plan to work in the Pyramid Program to attract elementary and middle school students to STEM. The Air Force Association supported Karen s efforts to strengthen the teaching corps and curricula with awards and grants. We responded to her requests for mentors and speakers, enabling her to offer science project mentors and helped her build a computer lab in Her individual programs attracted students from many high schools in the area. We have recognized her before for her accomplishments. Today we believe that Karen s dream is a model for others, both statewide and nationally. The key to success has always been the front-line teacher who drives the message home in so many intriguing ways, encouraging students to just try, then standing by with AFA to support their efforts. Karen has created squadrons of those teachers and stands with them to foster the growth of our youth. It is time for us to recognize her as one of those rare heroes who chose to spend her life living the values and achieving the dream that the Air Force Association shares with her. 12 Gail Drake, from Battlefield High School in Haymarket Virginia is the 2018 Gabriel Chapter Teacher of the Year Gail Drake was selected as the Gabriel Chapter High School Teacher of the Year and also received a check for $250 from the Chapter, which was matched by a $50 grant for the Virginia AFA and a $250 grant from AFA National Headquarters. Professor Drake was the first person hired when Battlefield High School (BHS) opened as an Information Technology (IT) specialty school in August of 2004 and she has been there for the last 12 years. She leads an amazing variety of STEM education programs including CyberPatriot, robotics competition, and 3-D printing. We first met Professor Drake in 2014, when she led the first CyberPatriot team at BHS to the top performance in the State of Virginia. The Gabriel Chapter reached out to Professor Drake in order to become part of her network of supporters. In 2016, BHS fielded four CP teams from the ILITE program which stands for Inspiring Leaders in Technology and Engineering. In addition, Professor Drake supported MSgt (ret) Dave Schuler to field an AFJROTC CP team for the first time. Gail s unwavering devotion to the students has helped bring home awards at regional and national competitions, raised the standardized scores and launched careers in STEM for many students. Her STEM leadership improved the future for hundreds of students and her community. It is with great pleasure that we recognize Gail Drake as our Chapter High School Teacher of the Year for 2018! Gabriel Chapter Members Recognized at Annual Awards Banquet At our June membership event, the Gabriel Chapter hosted Chapter Officers from across the Virginia AFA and officers for the State Executive Committee (EXCOM) for the Quarterly EXCOM Meeting. After a day-long conference and the Annual State Convention to elect new State leadership, the Gabriel Chapter hoisted a dinner that featured our Annual Awards Presentation and announcement of the Gabriel Chapter Teachers of the Year. Chapter President Joe Burke announced that Jack Diamond, Chapter Secretary, was recognized as 2018 Chapter Member of the Year. Other chapter members were recognized for their enthusiastic support for Chapter programs and contributing their time and talents to various activities throughout the year. AFA is committed to caring for our Wounded Airmen. Join AFA at their first annual Wounded Airmen Cycling Challenge in Arlington to raise funds in support of our Airmen and their families, while enjoying one of Arlington's premier indoor cycling and spin venues. This event was held at the CycleBar, a premier indoor cycling venue, and AFA's goal was to raise $50,000 for AFA's Wounded Airmen and Family Programs. They'll have two cycle classes with 47 riders each and have requested (optional) each rider secure $500 in donations. CMSgt (ret) Barb Taylor pedals her way to victory. Barb raised thousands of dollars for Wounded Airmen and their families toward the goal of $50,000. The Gabriel Chapter sponsored Chief Master Sergeant (ret) Barbara Taylor, Senior Manager, Corporate Relations at AFA Headquarters. Barb wrote the Chapter to report on her success: Thank you. Thank you. THANK YOU!!!! Together we raised lots of money for Wounded Airmen and their families!!! How you've helped: We will use this money to buy adaptive sporting equipment, provide emergency family needs and get our Warrior Airmen and their care givers to CARE events and the Warrior Games!!! Gabriel Chapter Represented at AFA Breakfast for Secretary of the Air Force Heather Wilson The Gabriel Chapter was well represented at the Air Force Association breakfast honoring the Honorable Heather Wilson in her second appearance for the AFA Breakfast Seminar Series. At the AFA Breakfast Seminar Series event on March 30th from 7:30 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. at the Capitol Hill Club, Secretary Wilson stressed the need to free airmen from burdensome over-regulation. Freeing Airmen to creatively perform their jobs will develop the skills needed to think and adapt on their feet in combat situations. Chapter President Joe Burke led the Gabriel delegation with Chapter Treasurer and Virginia AFA Secretary, Dallas Kennedy. Local AFA Chapters were well represented at AFA Breakfast for SECAF Heather Wilson. The Secretary also spoke about the challenges facing the Air Force while trying to re capitalize its fighter fleet, introduce new tankers and develop a new bomber, while modernizing the Ground Based Strategic Defense and increasing manpower to 375,000 Airmen. It is a daunting task, but Secretary Wilson demonstrated to this friendly crowd that she is up to the challenge. Gabriel Chapter Partners with Cold War Museum to Bring History Alive in Northern Virginia The Cold War Museum is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization dedicated to education, preservation, and research on the global, ideological, and political confrontations between East and West from the end of World War II to the dissolution of the Soviet Union. Ate their next event, on Sunday, July 22 nd, former NSA Deputy Chief Scientist John O Hara will speak on Technology...the Key to NSA Success. For decades NSA has been at the forefront of developing and funding leadingedge technology in order to solve its unique problems. Dr. O Hara will discuss and give examples of the tremendous areas of NSA research and development and how this technology has helped solve NSA problems. He will also give examples of how this technology has filtered into the private sector. Hours: Saturdays 11-4pm, Sundays 1-4pm, and by appointment. Richmond Hosts Virginia AFA State Drill Competition Volunteers from the Richmond and Tidewater Chapters of the Virginia Air Force Association once again hosted the annual Virginia AFA JROTC State Drill Competition. High school JROTC programs from across Virginia converged on the Atlee High School gym on April 24 th to demonstrate their skill and precision in marching and drill. This year, the Virginia AFA will "spotlight" the Virginia Air National Guard, and the 203rd Red Horse Sq. This should be another great year. This Council gives one voice to the interests of more than 840,000 Virginia veterans. The JLC supports the Department of Veteran Affairs and provides direct input to the Governor and General Assembly for annual budget items and legislation to further the interests of veterans and their families in Virginia. The stated goal is to make Virginia the most veteran friendly state in the union. Major programs of interest are the Virginia Wounded Warrior Program (not to be confused with the national Wounded Warrior 15 of 22

Honoring Our Fallen Comrades PETERSON DONALD LEE PETERSON Lt Gen., USAF (Ret.) Son of the late Beatrice and Ralph Peterson, passed away on Monday, July 3, Don grew up in Dallas and attended South Oak Cliff High School. He was a student in the Fightin' Texas Aggie class of 1966, the Corps of Cadets, and a member of the Ross Volunteers. After obtaining a B.B.A. in business, he joined the Air Force and completed pilot training at Webb Air Force Base in Big Spring, Texas. Serving our Nation for 35 years, Don - call sign "Peteo" - flew a variety of aircraft (T-38, EC/KC-135, F-4, F-15 and F-111) and was a Vietnam combat veteran. He was a Command Pilot with more than 4000 flight hours, including 597 combat hours. Don enjoyed commanding the 525 TFS squadron at Bitburg AFB, West Germany, and the wings both at Cannon AFB, New Mexico, and Randolph AFB, Texas, and led the Defense Command Operations Center at Cheyenne Mountain, Colorado. He served in multiple headquarters positions at the Pentagon, including Assistant Deputy Chief of Staff for Air Force Plans and Operations, Assistant Deputy

17 Chief of Staff for Air and Space Operations, and Deputy Chief of Staff for Personnel. Don completed post-graduate work, including an MBA in Economics from Auburn University; Air Force Squadron Officer School; Air Command and Staff College; Air War College; the Executive Development Program at Carnegie- Mellon University; and the Program for Senior Executives in National and International Security, Harvard University. Don received the Distinguished Service Medal, the Defense Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit with Oak Leaf Cluster, and the Distinguished Flying Cross. Much loved by those with whom he served, Don continued after retirement to advocate on behalf of the men and women of the Air Force as President of the Air Force Association for five years. Don is survived by his loving family, including his wife of 51 years, Gayle; son, Donald and Kerry, and beloved grandchildren Elsa, Henry and Sydney. Also by his side to the end were his sister, Gail and John Colwick, and nephew, Scott and Kate Strzinek (Molly and Jack). He also is survived by brother, Ralph (Pete) Peterson (Mark, David and Lori, their mother Francis, and families); sister-in-law, Drs. Elaine and Larry Carver; nephew, Mitch Weatherly (Nola and Eamonn and their mother, Rachael), and brother-in-law, Rob and Ilona Spencer, Stephanie Spencer, and Michelle and John Reynolds (Meredith and Allison). 20 Gabriel Chapter Top Ten Tips for Recruiting and Retaining Members The General Charles A. Gabriel Chapter has been recognized for a successful retention program. AFA Field Operations asked Chapter President Joe Burke for his secrets to success. Here are ten tips that Joe shared with our AFA National Field Operations Staff. How has the Chapter been so successful at growing new members and retaining existing members? Joe said, My usual answer is that there is no magic to retention, that it just takes some commitment and to remember it s a contact sport. Here are the Gabriel Top Ten Tips for Retention: 1. Chapter Programs and Events That Offer Value to Members - People join the Association for different reasons and have varying interests in AFA programs. Retention starts with running balanced Chapter programs that advance the AFA mission -- Advocating for Airpower, developing Aerospace Education and supporting Airmen and Families while offering something for everyone. Our membership events bring active duty and reserve component speakers who present on topics that serve the AFA mission. We have at least one Chapter social event a year and we run monthly meetings in different locations throughout our AOR to make it easier for members to attend. 2. Communicate with our Membership. We have a great communications team with VP for Communications, Jack Diamond, and VP for Social Media, Sam Shelton. Every week we notify members about upcoming Chapter events through our Quarterly Newsletter, Chapter website, Facebook page, and Constant Contact notifications. 3. Reach Out to First Year Members and Transfers We download the Chapter membership roster monthly (or whenever it s updated by national) and contact new members to make sure they know we are their Chapter and are ready to help them get active in our Association. 4. Don t Take Attendance -- We understand that they can t get to some or even most of our events due to active duty, work or family commitments. We make it clear that if they can participate in only one of our events, they are still making a difference. Even for our Executive Committee Members, we consider participation voluntary whatever time they can commit is valued and appreciated. 5. Track Status with AFA Provided Reports - We download our Roster from the AFA website when it is updated around mid-month. The Update Roster lists all members who are coming up for renewal or whose memberships are expiring. The roster also tells us whether or not a member we previously contacted about re-upping has actually renewed his or her membership. 6. Watch the AFA Retention Training Module - The Retention training module on the AFA website goes through the entire process, including the how to use the rosters for Chapter retention. 7. Assign a Chapter Lead for Membership Our Chapter VP for Membership is currently vacant. Nevertheless, one person needs to lead the Retention effort. So our Chapter President has stepped in, assisted by other Executive Committee (EXCOM) members. The Chapter President owns and leads our program. It takes a group of people to implement, but one person is responsible. 8. Retention is a Contact Sport We personally contact each member. Usually the member has already been contacted by AFA National, with letters and s. We assign a real person to reach out with personal contact by telephone or -- to each member who is up for renewal. 9. Retention is Also a Team Sport Whenever possible; we make sure that the person who recruited the member, or who knows him or her best, reaches out to make the contact. For all others, we divvy up the list among the EXCOM. In the end, an assigned sponsor (retention committee or a member who knows them) contacts the member and provides that personal touch. 10. Follow-up Every month our VP for Membership audits the membership roster to see who renewed. We follow-up with any disconnects and confirm the member s status.
