1 The Middlesbrough Roll of Honour of the Great War Names T Compiled by Robert Coulson ( ) In the years thousands of Middlesbrough men and women served their country in a time of hardship, stress and suffering both for the troops on the battlefronts and those left at home. After the Armistice in November of 1918 handsome memorial tablets and plaques recalling the fallen were erected in the works, shops and churches of the Middlesbrough area. At this time a committee was formed to consider the question of a war memorial for the town as a whole to remember the citizens who had laid down their lives. In the words of the committee, We recognise the splendid sacrifice made by our men and we desire that our children and our children s children should hear the story and share in the inspiration which such sacrifice will always give. The response of the townspeople resulted in the fine cenotaph of Aberdeen granite and the wall of Portland stone containing the bronze panels with the names of the fallen that we see today at the entrance to Albert Park. The memorial works were completed at a cost of approximately 17,000 and the people of the town attended in their thousands for the dedication and unveiling ceremony which took place on November 11 th This roll of honour contains close to 3500 names of the fallen who are remembered on the memorial and also those whose names were put forward by their families after the unveiling ceremony. I felt it fitting that as the centenary of the onset of the Great War approaches I should try and add a little information on those remembered and the actions in which they laid down their lives. I would just add that much as I regret it, details on some of theses brave people is not available due to the passage of time but their names will still appear in the text as they do on the memorial panels. 2 Finally just a few points to consider, It will be noticed that on some of the entries no Middlesbrough connection may be obvious, indeed the person appears to have come from well outside the area or even the country. It must be remembered that it was the townspeople who put the names forward for inclusion and as an example a relation who stayed with the family in the town occasionally, could well appear after his family took the trouble to forward the name. Middlesbrough was a thriving centre of industry at the time and a person may well have been employed in the town before hostilities and had their name included by workmates. Serving under an alias is also quite common and although sometimes used to cover criminal activity, was normally just a person keen to serve but underage and using another identity. Also a mother who had taken another man s name might have offspring who preferred to serve using their natural father s name. Double entries for the same name also appear quite a few times, for example, Samuel Alder and S Alder. I believe they are one and the same person named twice as a result of a large family with different branches putting the name forward twice. The person will appear in the listing as named on the memorial with any variations in spelling and second names being included in the text. It will be noticed that some entries begin I believe this to be. These are people who to the best of my judgement are those named but can not be 100% certain. They are included with the best intentions and if a mistake is made I make my apologies in advance. 3 Taggart, James Robert. Born in Middlesbrough, James Robert Taggart enlisted in the town to serve with the 1 st battalion of the King s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry. Private Taggart was killed in heavy fighting at the village of Dourlers during the Battle of the Sambre on November 7 th 1918 at the age of 19. He is buried close to where he fell in Dourlers Communal Cemetery Extension just off the Mauberge to Avesnes-sur-Helpe road. James Taggart was the son of Wilson and Rose Ann Taggart of 34 High Gosford Street in Middlesbrough. Tait, George. George Tait enlisted in Middlesbrough for war service with the 4 th battalion of the Yorkshire Regiment. Private Tait was killed in actions close to the Trou-Bayard to Le Point Mortier road during the Battle of the Lys on April 10 th His grave can be visited today in Croix-Du-Bac British Cemetery in the village of Steenwerck to the south west of Armentieres. Tate, Stanley Jefferson. Born and living in Middlesbrough, Stanley Jefferson Tate enlisted in Richmond into the 2 nd battalion of the Yorkshire Regiment. Private Tate was killed in actions close to Fleurbaix at the age of 23 on February 18 th The son of Middlesbrough couple Michael and Elizabeth Tate his grave lies in Ration Farm Military Cemetery in the south eastern outskirts of Armentieres. Tate, Walter. Walter Tate was Darlington born and enlisted in Middlesbrough for service with the Royal Army Service Corps before transferring to the 12 th battalion of the Northumberland Fusiliers. Private Tate was killed in fighting at Mametz Wood during the Somme offensive on July 12 th 1916 at the age of 21. The son of John George and Emma Tate of 119 Borough Road East in Middlesbrough his name is remembered on the Thiepval Memorial on the Somme. Page 3 of 28

4 Taylor, Albert. Born at Tipton in Staffordshire and enlisting in York, Albert Taylor was a member of the 5 th battalion of the West Yorkshire Regiment. Private Taylor was killed in action during the 2 nd Battle of Kemmel on April 25 th 1918 at the age of 37. He has no known grave and is remembered on the Tyne Cot Memorial to the north east of Ypres in Belgium. Taylor, Charles Frederick. Charles Frederick Taylor was Middlesbrough born and served with the Royal Navy as a Stoker 1 st Class aboard the destroyer HMS Narbrough. He perished aged 25 on January 12 th 1918 when the Narbrough was wrecked on rocks off South Ronaldsay in the Orkneys during a violent blizzard. His name is remembered today on Southsea Common on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial. Taylor, Charles John. Enlisting in London with the Royal Fusiliers, Charles John Taylor then moved to the 15 th battalion of the King s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry. Corporal Taylor was killed in fighting during the Advance in Flanders on August 16 th 1918 aged 43. His grave can be seen in Aval Wood Military Cemetery situated five miles south west of the town of Bailleul. Charles Taylor was the son of Charles and Caroline M Taylor of Windsor and the husband of Kate Taylor of 29 Diamond Road in Slough. Taylor, Edward. Edward Taylor was born in the St Hildas area of Middlesbrough where he enlisted with the 1 st battalion of the Coldstream Guards. Killed in actions at Hooge near Ypres, Private Taylor lost his life on November 18 th 1914 and is remembered today on the Menin Gate Memorial in Ypres. Taylor, Frederick. London born and enlisting in Westminster, Frederick Taylor served with the 11 th battalion of the Essex Regiment. Private Taylor was wounded in actions at the Battle of Scherpenberg and died of his wounds on April 29 th His grave today can be seen in Arneke British Cemetery situated five miles north west of Cassel. Frederick Taylor was the husband of Mrs E Taylor of 20 Kendall Street in Middlesbrough. Page 4 of 28

5 Taylor, Frederick John. Frederick John Taylor was Middlesbrough born and enlisted to serve with the Royal Army Medical Corps in the town. Private Taylor died at home aged 26 on August 23 rd 1918 and today lies in Linthorpe Cemetery. Frederick Taylor was the son of Mrs Mary Ann Taylor and the late Mr Charles Taylor of 167 Newport Road in Middlesbrough. Taylor, Herbert. Born at Brierley Hill and enlisting in Middlesbrough, Herbert Taylor was a member of the 10 th battalion of the Yorkshire Regiment. Private Taylor was killed in fighting at the Chalk Pit during the Battle of Loos on September 28 th 1915 and with no known grave is remembered on the Loos Memorial at Dud Corner Cemetery on the Lens to Bethune road. Taylor, John Robert. John Robert Taylor was born and enlisted in Middlesbrough into the 2 nd battalion of the Yorkshire Regiment. Lance Corporal Taylor was killed in fighting close to Voormezeele on May 8 th 1918 aged 21 and is remembered today on the Tyne Cot Memorial on the Passchendaele Ridge. John Taylor was the son of Mary Jane Pearson, formerly Taylor of 126 Marsh Road in Middlesbrough and the late Mr William Taylor. Taylor, Thomas. Middlesbrough born and enlisting in the town, Thomas Taylor did war service with the 91 st Brigade of the Royal Field Artillery. Sergeant Taylor was killed in action on July 1 st 1916 aged 22 and today lies in Vlamertinghe Military Cemetery close to Ypres in Belgium. Thomas Taylor was the son of Middlesbrough couple George and Margaret Ann Taylor. Taylor, Thomas Kidd. Thomas Kidd Taylor was Thornaby born and enlisted in Middlesbrough to join the 9 th battalion of the Yorkshire Regiment. Private Taylor lost his life in fighting at Battle Wood during the Battle of Messines on June 7 th 1917 at the age of 34. He has no known final resting place and is remembered on the Menin Gate Memorial at Ypres in Belgium. Page 5 of 28

6 Taylor, Vivian W. Middlesbrough born and enlisting in the town, Vivian W Taylor was a member of the 7 th battalion of the Lincolnshire Regiment. Private Taylor was killed in fighting at the trench known as Pearl Alley during the Battle of the Somme on July 9 th 1916 at the age of 20. His name is remembered today on the Thiepval Memorial set high above the old Somme battlegrounds. Taylor, William. Able Seaman William Taylor served with the Anson battalion of the Royal Naval Division and lost his life at the 3 rd Battle of Krithia during the Gallipoli campaign on June 4 th With no known final resting place his name appears on the Helles Memorial at the southern tip of the Gallipoli peninsula. Taylor, William Thomas. Born in Stockton and enlisting in Middlesbrough, William Thomas Taylor joined the Yorkshire Regiment before transferring to the 1/5 th battalion of the Durham Light Infantry. Private Taylor was killed in actions at Mametz Wood during the Somme offensive on November 5 th 1916 aged 23. His grave can be visited today in Warlencourt British Cemetery three miles south west of Bapaume on the Somme. William Taylor was the son of Richard and Lucy Taylor of 53 Ernest Street in Middlesbrough. Taylor, Albert Victor. Albert Victor Taylor was born in Middlesbrough where he enlisted to serve with the 5 th battalion of the Yorkshire Regiment. Private Taylor was killed in fighting at Triangle Wood on March 3 rd 1917 at the age of 19 and is remembered on the Thiepval Memorial on the Somme. Albert Taylor was the son of Thomas and Margaret Taylor of 123 Victoria Road in Middlesbrough. Teasdale, James. I believe this to be James E Teasdale who enlisted in Newcastle into the 1 st Northumbrian Brigade of the Royal Field Artillery. Gunner Teasdale was killed in action on January 4 th 1916 his grave today lying in Bedford House Cemetery situated one and a half miles south of Ypres town centre in Belgium. Page 6 of 28

7 Teasdale, Robert Henry. Robert Henry Teasdale was Middlesbrough born and enlisted in the town for service with the 25 th Divisional Signal Company of the Royal Engineers. Sapper Teasdale was killed in action on May 29 th 1918 but his name is missing from the Commonwealth War Graves Commission listings and as such his burial place remains unknown. Teece, William Henry. Born in North Ormesby and enlisting in West Hartlepool, William Henry Teece was a member of the 22 nd battalion of the Durham Light Infantry. Private Teece was killed in action during the Battle of Rosieres on March 26 th 1918 at the age of 29. He has no known grave and his name appears on the Pozieres Memorial situated alongside the Bapaume to Albert road on the Somme. Telford, William. William Telford was born in Sunderland and enlisted in Middlesbrough for war service with the 6 th battalion of the Yorkshire Regiment. Private Telford was killed in an attack on the Turkish line at Ismail Oglu Tepe during the Gallipoli campaign on August 22 nd 1915 aged 21. His name is remembered today on the Helles Memorial at the southern tip of the Gallipoli peninsula. William Telford was the son of Mr and Mrs W Telford of 27 Hill Street in Middlesbrough. Temple, George. Born and enlisting in West Hartlepool, George Greenwell Temple did his war service with the 2 nd battalion of the Durham Light Infantry. Private Temple was killed in action aged 22 on May 3 rd 1917 and today lies in Philosophe British Cemetery at Mazingarbe between Bethune and Lens. He was the son of Charles and Mary Jane Temple and husband of Jane Mott, formerly Temple of 5 Brook Street in West Hartlepool. Templeton, Alexander. Alexander Templeton was Middlesbrough born and enlisted in West Hartlepool into the 2 nd battalion of the Durham Light Infantry. Lance Corporal Templeton was killed in fighting at Hooge close to Ypres on August 9 th 1915 at the age of 32. The husband of Evelina Manuel, formerly Templeton of 19 Oak Street in Middlesbrough his name is remembered today on the Menin Gate Memorial at Ypres in Belgium. Page 7 of 28

8 Theaker, Robert Brown. Staithes born and enlisting in Middlesbrough, Robert Brown Theaker was a member of the 12 th battalion of the Northumberland Fusiliers. Wounded in action, Private Theaker died of his injuries on May 23 rd 1916 and today lies in Bois Guillaume Communal Cemetery in the north eastern suburbs of the city of Rouen. Theakston, John Henry. John Henry Theakston was born in Middlesbrough enlisting in the town with the 5 th battalion of the Northamptonshire Regiment. Private Theakston was killed in action at the age of 20 on July 2 nd 1918, his grave today being situated in Senlis Communal Cemetery Extension three miles north west of Albert on the Somme. John Theakston was the son of Frank and the late Emma Theakston of 23 Leven Street, Newport in Middlesbrough. Theakston, James Fergus. Enlisting in Middlesbrough, Newcastle born James Fergus Theakston joined the West Yorkshire Regiment before transferring to the 13 th battalion of the Northumberland Fusiliers. Private Theakston was wounded in fighting during the 1 st Battle of the Scarpe, Arras offensive and died of his injuries aged 22 on April 22 nd His grave can be visited today in Warlincourt Halte British Cemetery situated off the main road between Arras and Doullens. Theakston, John W. John W Theakston was Middlesbrough born enlisting with the Yorkshire Regiment in the town before transferring to the 9 th battalion of the Highland Light Infantry. Wounded in action during the German spring offensive, Private Theakston died of his wounds at the age of 19 on March 28 th Today his grave lies in Nine Elms British Cemetery just to the west of Poperinghe in Belgium. He was the son of John William and Elizabeth Theakston of Middlesbrough and the husband of Elizabeth Theakston of 6 Harberton Bridge, South Circular Road in Dublin. Thirkell, George William. Born and enlisting in Middlesbrough, George William Thirkell was a member of the 9 th battalion of the Yorkshire Regiment. Private Thirkell was wounded in fighting at Polygon Wood during the Passchendaele offensive and died of his injuries on October 9 th 1917 at the age of 21. The son of Thomas William and Gertrude Thirkell his grave can be visited today in Boulogne Eastern Cemetery on the French channel coast. Page 8 of 28

9 Thomas, Fred. Fred Thomas was a Leading Stoker in the Royal Navy serving aboard the light cruiser HMS Southampton. He perished aged 27 on May 31 st 1916 during the Battle of Jutland when German gunfire swept over HMS Southampton. Fred Thomas was the son of Moses and Mary Thomas of Middlesbrough and his name is remembered today on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial on Southsea Common. Thomas, George Llewellyn. West Hartlepool born and enlisting in Middlesbrough, George Llewellyn Thomas was a member of the 8 th battalion of the Yorkshire Regiment. Private Thomas was killed in a 4-50pm attack on the village of Contalmaison during the Somme offensive on July 10 th 1916 at the age of 24. With no known grave his name appears on the panels of the Thiepval Memorial on the old Somme battlegrounds. Thomas, A. Alexander Thomas was born in the St Pauls area of Middlesbrough where he enlisted into the Yorkshire Regiment later transferring to the 7 th battalion of the Border Regiment. Private Thomas was killed in action aged 37 just as the Passchendaele offensive was drawing to a close on November 19 th He has no known final resting place, his name remembered on the Tyne Cot Memorial on the Passchendaele Ridge. Alexander Thomas was the son of William and Sarah Thomas and the husband of Emma Cox Rogers, formerly Thomas of 43 James Street in Thornaby. Thomas, Jack. I believe this to be a double entry for either John Alfred Thomas or John Henry Thomas listed below. Thomas, John Alfred. John Alfred Thomas was Middlesbrough born enlisting in the town with the Royal Field Artillery where he served with the 69 th Brigade Ammunition Column during the campaign in Salonika. Corporal Thomas was wounded in action and died of his injuries aged 22 on November 23 rd 1915, his name being remembered today on the Doiran Memorial set close to Lake Doiran in northern Greece. John Thomas was the son of Mrs Fanny Thompson, formerly Thomas of 106 Costa Street in Middlesbrough and the late Mr John Thomas. Page 9 of 28

10 Thomas, John Henry. Enlisting in his hometown of Middlesbrough, John Henry Thomas did war service with the 4 th battalion of the Yorkshire Regiment. Private Thomas was killed in fighting on the Craonne Plateau on the Chemin des Dames Ridge on May 27 th With no known grave his name appears on the panels of the Soissons Memorial in the town of Soissons sixty miles north east of Paris. Thomas, Joseph. Joseph Thomas was born in Middlesbrough and enlisted in the town to serve with the 6 th battalion of the Yorkshire Regiment. Corporal Thomas was killed in actions close to Cambrin on February 22 nd 1918 and today lies in Cambrin Military Cemetery situated fourteen miles north of Arras. Thomas, William. Stockton born William Thomas enlisted in the town into the 6 th battalion of the Yorkshire Regiment. Private Thomas was killed in an attack on the Turkish trenches at Ismail Oglu Tepe on August 21 st 1915 during the Gallipoli campaign. He has no known grave and his name is remembered today on the Helles Memorial at the southern tip of the Gallipoli peninsula. Thomason, Thomas Christian. Thomas Christian Thomason was born in Middlesbrough in1898 and on the town s memorial roll is listed as serving aboard the SS Stryn. The ship was lost in 1918 but he was not amongst the casualties so I can only assume he died at a later date but his name does not appear on the Commonwealth War Graves Commission listings. Thompson, Alfred. Born in Middlesbrough, Alfred Thompson enlisted in the town with the Royal Field Artillery. Serving with A Battery of the 46 th Brigade, Driver Thompson was killed in action on March 21 st 1918 during the German spring offensive. Having no known grave his name is remembered today on the Pozieres Memorial on the roadside between Albert and Bapaume on the Somme. Page 10 of 28

11 Thompson, Frederick James. Private Frederick James Thompson was a member of the Royal Marine Light Infantry and during the Battle of Jutland was serving aboard HMS Invincible. He was killed aged just 18 on May 31 st 1916 when Invincible blew up and sank after taking a hit from the SMS Lutzow. Frederick Thompson was the son of Henry and Margaret Thompson of 7 Victoria Road in Middlesbrough and is remembered on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial on Southsea Common. Thompson, Frederick Sydney. Born and enlisting in Middlesbrough, Frederick Sydney Thompson was a member of the 178 th Siege Battery of the Royal Garrison Artillery. Gunner Thompson died on February 12 th 1917 aged 36 and today lies in Aubigny Communal Cemetery Extension situated eight miles north west of Arras. Frederick Thompson was the son of Thomas and Elizabeth Thompson and the husband of Mrs Flora Thompson of 188 Crescent Road in Middlesbrough. Thompson, H. Herbert Thompson was born and lived in Thornaby and enlisted in Middlesbrough into the 13 th battalion of the Durham Light Infantry. Wounded in action during the Battle of the Selle, Private Thompson died of his injuries aged 20 on October 23 rd His grave can be visited today in Pommereuil British Cemetery in the village of Pommereuil situated two miles east of Le Cateau. Herbert Thompson was the son of Harriet Thompson of 20 Britannia Street in Thornaby. Thompson, Hy Abdale. Born and living in Middlesbrough, Harry Abdale Thompson enlisted in Darlington for service with the 18 th battalion of the Durham Light Infantry. Lance Corporal Thompson was killed in an attack on the village of Serre on the first day of the Battle of the Somme, July 1 st 1916 at the age of 27. Harry Thompson is remembered today on the Thiepval Memorial overlooking the old Somme battlefields. Thompson, George Battison. George Battison Thompson was Middlesbrough born and enlisted in Stockton with the Royal Field Artillery. A member of the 25 th Battery, 35 th Brigade, Driver Thompson was killed in action aged 33 on August 31 st 1916 during the Somme offensive. His grave can be visited today in Quarry Cemetery in the village of Montauban six miles east of Albert on the Somme. Page 11 of 28

12 Thompson, James. Middlesbrough born and enlisting in the town, James Thompson was a member of the 2 nd battalion of the Yorkshire Regiment. Private Thompson was killed in action aged 19 on October 22 nd 1914 when a mass of German infantry attacked the battalion s line in front of Polygon Wood during the 1 st Battle of Ypres. James Thompson was the son of Mr James Thompson of 43 Calvert Street in Middlesbrough and is remembered today on the Menin Gate Memorial at Ypres in Belgium. Thompson, John James. John James Thompson was born at Morpeth in Northumberland and enlisted in Middlesbrough with the Grenadier Guards later transferring to the 1 st battalion of the Welsh Guards. Private Thompson was wounded in actions during the Battle of Loos and died of his wounds on September 30 th 1915 at the age of 38. His grave can be seen today in Chocques Military Cemetery two miles north west of Bethune on the road to Lillers. John Thompson was the husband of Mrs Mary Jane Thompson of 21 Elm Street in Middlesbrough. Thompson, Joseph. Enlisting in Middlesbrough into the 5 th battalion of the Border Regiment, Private Joseph Thompson was killed in action on April 24 th 1917 at the 2 nd Battle of the Scarpe, part of the Arras offensive. He has no known grave and is remembered on the Arras Memorial at the Faubourg D Amiens Cemetery in Arras. Thompson, Joseph Ian. Joseph Iron Thompson as his name is recorded on the memorial rolls was Middlesbrough born and enlisted in the town for service with the 10 th battalion of the Yorkshire Regiment. Private Thompson was killed in an attack on Shelter Wood during the Battle of the Somme on July 3 rd 1916 at the age of 35. Remembered on the Thiepval Memorial he was the son of the late William and Emma Thompson and the husband of Ada Beatrice Thompson of 39 Lawport Street, Newport in Middlesbrough. Page 12 of 28

A member of the 19 th battalion Lancashire Fusiliers, Private John Thomas Thompson died of wounds at home aged 31 on November 22 nd 1919 and today lies in Linthorpe Cemetery. John Thompson was the husband of Ethel Thompson and son of Mr and Mrs Thomas Thompson of 12 Milbank Street in Middlesbrough. Thompson, Leonard. Leonard Thompson was born at Battersby in North Yorkshire and enlisted in Middlesbrough into the Yorkshire Regiment before transferring to the 10 th battalion of the King s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry. Lance Corporal Thompson was killed in actions at the Battle of Morval during the Somme offensive on September 25 th 1916 at the age of 24. With no known grave his name is remembered on the Thiepval Memorial to the missing of the Somme battles. Thompson, Septimus. Thompson, R. Full name Samuel Renny Thompson was born in Workington enlisting in Middlesbrough with the 11 th battalion of the Northumberland Fusiliaers. Private Thompson was killed in an attack on Bailiff Wood during the Somme offensive on July 7 th 1916 at the age of 29. Samuel Renny Thompson was the son of Ruth Moffat, formerly Thompson of 12 Pine Street in Cargo Fleet and the late George Roper Thompson, his name remembered today on the Thiepval Memorial on the Somme. Thompson, Ralph. West Hartlepool born and enlisting in Middlesbrough, Ralph Thompson did his war service with the 8 th battalion of the Yorkshire Regiment. Private Thompson was wounded in actions close to Bazentin Le Petit Wood during the Battle of the Somme and died of his injuries aged 21 on September 29 th His grave can be visited today in Dernancourt Communal Cemetery Extension situated two miles south of Albert on the Somme. 14 Thompson, Thomas. Thomas Thompson was Middlesbrough born and enlisted in the town into the Royal Field Artillery. Serving with B Battery of the 79 th Brigade, Gunner Thompson was killed in action aged 26 on May 19 th He was the husband of Mrs A Thompson of 4 Nelson Place, Wellington Street in Middlesbrough and today lies in Varennes Military Cemetery six miles from Albert in the village of Varennes. Thompson, T M. Middlesbrough born and enlisting in the town, Thomas Maltby Thompson was a member of the 10 th battalion of the Yorkshire Regiment. Private Thompson died in a hospital centre on December 10 th 1916 aged 31 his grave today located in Wimereux Communal Cemetery three miles north of Boulogne on the French channel coast. Thomas Thompson was the son of the late Thomas and Sarah Jane Thompson and the husband of Annie S Thompson of 2 Customs Row in Cargo Fleet. Thompson, William Isaac. William Isaac Thompson was born in Middlesbrough where he enlisted to serve with the 233 rd Field Company of the Royal Engineers. Driver Thompson died at home on January 4 th 1916 aged 18 and today his grave can be seen in Linthorpe Cemetery. William Thompson was the son of David C and Ada J Thompson of 105 Ormesby Road in Middlesbrough. Thompson, William Ian. Born in Middlesbrough, William Ian Thompson enlisted in the town into the 14 th battalion of the Durham Light Infantry. Frank Thornton was the son of Robert and Eleanor Thornton of Stapleton near Darlington. Thornton, John Frederick. Cardiff born and enlisting in Middlesbrough, John Frederick Thornton was a member of the 4 th battalion of the Grenadier Guards. The holder of the Military Medal, Guardsman Thornton was wounded in actions at The Quadrilateral during the Somme offensive and died of his wounds aged 22 on September 13 th His grave can be visited today in La Neuville British Cemetery in the village of Corbie eight miles south west of Albert on the Somme. John Thornton was the eldest son of Elizabeth Jane and the late Frederick Thornton of Ashville Acklam Road in Middlesbrough. Thornton, Percy Maxman. Percy Maxman Thornton was born in Sheffield and enlisted in Middlesbrough with the South Staffordshire Regiment and then transferred to the 6 th battalion of the Leicestershire Regiment. Lance Corporal Thornton was killed in action aged 19 on September 18 th 1918 during the Battle of Epehy and today lies in Unicorn Cemetery in the village of Vendhuile situated ten miles north of St Quentin. Thornton, Samuel. Born and living in Middlesbrough, Samuel Thornton joined the Durham Light Infantry before transferring to the 12 th battalion of the South Staffordshire Regiment. North Ormesby born John Thomas Thursfield enlisted in Middlesbrough into the 5 th battalion of the Yorkshire Regiment. Private Thursfield was wounded in fighting close to Vermandovillers during the Battle of Rosieres and died of his injuries on March 28 th 1918 aged 25. Burwood Jesse Thurston was born in Stoke Newington in London and enlisted in Chelmsford with the Royal Engineers. Thurston, Leonard. Born in Stoke Newington and enlisting in Shoreditch in London, Leonard Thurston served with the 14 th battalion of the Royal Welsh Fusiliers. Thomas Herbert Tibbett was Middlesbrough born and enlisted in the town with the 5 th battalion of the Yorkshire Regiment. Private Tibbett was killed in fighting at Nepal Trench during the 2 nd Battle of the Scarpe on April 23 rd 1917 at the age of 19. William Readman Tighe was North Ormesby born and enlisted in Middlesbrough with the King s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry before transferring to the 1/5 th battalion of the Gloucestershire Regiment. Private Tighe was killed in fighting during the Battle of Cambrai on October 9 th 1918 at the age of 19. His grave can be visited today in Busigny Communal Cemetery Extension, six miles south west of Le Cateau in the village of Busigny. Timbury, Alfred. Born in Motherwell in Scotland, Alfred Timbury enlisted in Middlesbrough for service with the 4 th battalion of the Gordon Highlanders. Private Timbury was killed in action at the Battle of the Menin Road during the Passchendaele offensive on September 20 th He has no known final resting place his name appearing on the panels of the Tyne Cot Memorial on the Passchendaele Ridge. Timmins, Frank. Frank Timmins was born in Middlesbrough where he enlisted for service with the Royal Field Artillery. Today his grave lies in the Belgian town of Poperinghe to the west of Ypres in Poperinghe New Military Cemetery. George Tinkler was the son of Mr Thomas Tinkler of the Church Home, Wellington Street in Middlesbrough. Tinmouth, Robert. Sunderland born Robert Tinmouth served with the Merchant Navy as Mate aboard the SS Ida Duncan. He perished aged 56 on January 31 st 1917 when the Ida Duncan struck a mine and sank half a mile east of the South Gare Lighthouse in the Tees Bay. The name of Robert Tinmouth is remembered on the Tower Hill Memorial in Trinity Square in London. Toll, Henry Learmouth. Henry Learmouth Toll was born in Middlesbrough where he enlisted into the Yorkshire Regiment before transferring to the 6 th battalion of the King s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry. James Tonkiss was the son of Mary Ann Tonkiss and the late James Tonkiss of 4 Ayresome Park Road in Middlesbrough. Toole, Arthur. Arthur Toole enlisted in his hometown of Middlesbrough to join the 26 th battalion of the Northumberland Fusiliers, the Tyneside Irish. Private Toole was killed in action attacking the village of La Boisselle on July 1 st 1916 at the age of 29 during the Battle of the Somme. His name is rememberd today on the Thiepval Memorial overlooking the old Somme battlefields. Topham, John. Serving with the Royal Navy, South Bank born John Topham was an Able Seaman aboard HMS Paxton. He perished on May 20 th 1917 aged just 18 when HMS Paxton operating as the Q-Ship Lady Patricia was torpedoed by U-46 one hundred miles west of Fastnet Rock off the southern coast of Ireland. The son of the late Mr and Mrs Topham of South Bank, the name of John Topham is remembered on Portsmouth Naval Memorial on Southsea Common. Townend, Charles. Charles Townend was born in Grimsby and enlisted in Middlesbrough for war service with the 8 th battalion of the Yorkshire Regiment. Private Townend was wounded in fighting in the Bois Grenier sector south of Armentieres and died of his injuries aged 23 on November 14 th His grave can be visited today in Erquinghem-Lys Churchyard Extension just to the west of Armentieres. Born in Newcastle, John Trodden was working as a labourer in Canada before the onset of war. He enlisted under the surname of Burns to serve with the Central Ontario Regiment of the Canadian infantry on December 16 th 1915 at New Westminster in British Columbia. Private Trodden/Burns was killed during the capture of the Vimy Ridge on April 9 th 1917 aged 37 and today lies in Bois-Carre British Cemetery in the village of Thelus on Vimy Ridge. He was the son of Patrick and the late Margaret Trodden of Newholland, Keady in County Armagh but listed his next of kin as Mr J Burns with an addition to also notify Mr T Sayers of 5 Brook Street in Middlesbrough in the event of his death. Trott, James. James Trott was born in Dumbarton in Scotland enlisting in Middlesbrough for service with the 9 th battalion of the Yorkshire Regiment. Private Trott was killed in actions between Stirling Castle and Sanctuary Wood during the Passchendaele offensive on September 19 th 1917 at the age of 25. The son of James and Jessie W Trott of 7 Coltman Street in North Ormesby he has no known grave and is remembered on the Tyne Cot Memorial to the north east of Ypres in Belgium. Trousdale, Abraham Herbert. Stokesley born Abraham Herbert Robertson Trousdale worked for the Labour Department of the Board of Trade before enlisting in Middlesbrough into the 15 th battalion of the London Regiment, the Civil Service Rifles. Attached to the 17 th battalion of the King s Royal Rifle Corps, Private Trousdale was wounded in actions at the Battle of Pilckem and died of his injuries on August 9 th 1917 aged 25.
