6 Strengthening relationships using APAN Countering Threats PANAMAX, a multinational exercise, focuses on the protection of the Panama Canal. Sixteen partner nations participate in interoperability training to see how land, sea, air and cyberspace forces can protect the Panama Canal within a simulated, fictitious threat. Because some participants lack Common Access Card (CAC) access to the portal, partner nation participants utilize APAN for collaboration. The Combined Forces Maritime Component Command (CFMCC) and Combined Forces Land Component Command (CFLCC) use APAN for unclassified information sharing in support of planning conferences. During exercises participants use file sharing, chat, and translation to simulate real-world collaboration between partners. Contingency Response FUERZAS ALIADAS HUMANITARIAS involves 14 countries in Central and South America, and the Caribbean, including Canada and the United States along with 21 international and regional organizations. The key focus of this exercise is to assist the Honduran government to improve national emergency response operation procedures and techniques during a natural disaster. In order to improve foreign military and civilian interaction, regional cooperation, and disaster relief capabilities APAN was utilized to assist in the planning and coordination of the event. Pre-exercise, participants were able to browse and study pre-exercise material, daily agendas, and site maps. During the exercise participants were able to use real-time chat rooms and collaborate on content within document libraries. Exercises like this allow to build upon lessons learned from the 21 Haiti earthquake, where APAN was key to coordinating efforts with NGOs, foreign governments, and private individuals providing humanitarian assistance and disaster (HADR) response services. TRADEWINDS (TW), a Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (CJCS) approved, SOUTH- COM sponsored annual exercise, involves security forces and disaster response agencies from partner nations, primarily from the Caribbean Basin, U.S., and Canada. The TW15 scenario focused specifically on Countering Transnational Organized Crime (CTOC) and Foreign Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (FHADR). During the execution of TW15, APAN was utilized as the primary information sharing tool. APAN was used in support of academics, scenarios, and exercise media-newscasts. Blogs and forums provided situational reports and FAQs to participants. Building Partner Capacity Colombia ZUT Development Work Group consists of Colombian and U.S. logistics and engineer subject matter experts (SMEs) who collaborate to design demobilization, disarmament, and reintegration (DDR) camps to support demobilization of Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia (FARC) guerrillas. APAN is the primary platform used by multinational participants of the Colombia ZUT Development Work Group. APAN is utilized for virtual meetings using Adobe Connect. Group Chats provide online collaboration and allows participants to receive real-time language translation from English to Spanish or Portuguese in chat rooms and content within the group. The group uses blogs for announcements and wikis to provide information to participants.
