The Scuttlebutt Vol. 17. No 07 July 2014 The Newsletter of the Korean War and Service Veterans of Lake County (FL), Inc., Chapter 169, Chartered P.O. Box , Leesburg, FL President s Column by Wally Jones T he month of August is upon us. The 61st Armistice Celebration to be held on August 2nd at the Veterans Memorial at Fountain Park will be different than in the past, when it centered around the Korean War Veterans. This Celebration will concern KSV, i.e., Korean Service Veterans, those who have served since 1954 and continue to serve on the 38th parallel. The Armistice was essentially a Cease Fire, but Firing albeit, minimal, is definitely occurring. Some 2000 have lost their lives since There remains some 30,000 American Soldiers on the DMZ that rotate annually. With this war continuing to produce Veterans, it is a rare opportunity for us to carry forward our Chapter with younger Members. But, many younger Veterans would be unable to be involved as they are occupied with jobs and family. If we look at those who are now 65 or older there should be some 390,000 available plus many more will have retired early. Those Veterans that live in close in proximity are the ones we definitely want to attract. And that is what we are trying to do with our August 2 event. Preevent publicity in the Daily Commercial has resulted in more than a dozen phone calls and s. We still hope that the Sentinel Lake will also see fit to carrying our notice, but they typically do not carry until just before meetings. August 8th and 10th brings us two more opportunities to locate and interest these Korean Service Veterans. Tom Thiel has been working with Bob Peters representing our Chapter on the Leesburg and Central Florida Baseball League Working Group to welcome the South Korean Team and Veterans as well. This will also be a time to Meet and Greet the KSV as well, welcome them to our Chapter, and pass out membership application forms. That is why you are needed so badly. You should have received the special July 2014 Scuttlebutt issue detailing complete information including parking (it is also reproduced here since we have about twenty without addresses). Our next Fund Drive is August 22nd at Southern Trace Publix. This is the second last Fund Drive for this year. I believe we have realized the best ever financial success so far. At the August 27th Member Meeting we will have a presentation on Fund Driving protocol. Mark your calendar. This year s Christmas party will be held at The Mission Inn on Friday, December 18th, 11:30 AM to 1:30 PM. Cost is $18.00 per person. (Continued on page 5)

Page 2 Vol. 17. No 07 July 2014 The Scuttlebutt S. Korean Collegiate team to play in Leesburg! Meet & Greet players on Sunday Aug. 10! I have placed my reputation on the line by promising the Leesburg area and Central Florida Baseball League that 169 would show up. Show up at both the baseball games and at the Meet and Greet on Sunday afternoon before the game. I did this because this is a special event, a special opportunity for Chapter visibility! And a chance to find those KSV we have been desperately seeking. And this is a special opportunity for you! Let s start with Meet and Greet (M&G) first. It will begin at 2:00 p.m. at the Air Conditioned Boat House Lounge on beautiful Lake Harris. You will have the opportunity to meet the players of both teams. Come to hear the new special audio CD I have put together especially for this event! Music from the early 1950 s. All those oldies we might remember: Come on-a my house, Dear John, You-You-You, Mockin Bird Hill, Cold-cold-heart, and many more. And the Song of Arirang, which we remember as ah de dong from our days in Korea. Yep, all on that one audio CD! The Boat House is about 450 feet from Pat Thomas Stadium where the gams will be played, but if that is too much there will be golf carts to take us there instead. (I told you the community has gone all our for us including changing the game times to earlier so that our time would not be too long.) Games: Friday Aug. 8 at 6:00 p.m. and Sunday Aug. 10 at 5:00 p.m. Showcase your Chapter! Meet and Greet both Teams Sunday at 2:00 p.m. Air Cond. Boat House on Lake Harris! Free Food! And you will be served free Baseball Food! Hot dogs and sausages served by the Ball Park crew. Did you hear me? Free food! So, for your chapter, and for me please come. If you or your other half does not want to be in the (Continued on page 3) 50 s Music Chapter videos! Death and Illness Reporting: Members and Spouses need to keep in mind that when there is a serious illness or, God forbid, death of the Member or Spouse, please notify the Chapter President so that we can notify all members and can properly prepare to assist you in your planning. Sick Call We are aware of a number of members who are ailing in one way or another; Jack Reynolds and Harold Sievers. Please keep us informed of anyone you know. We welcomed Bill Shumaker for the first time in a long while at last meeting.

The Scuttlebutt Vol. 17. No 07 July 2014 Page 3 (Continued from page 2) game elements come to the M&G at least. Met up with your fellow KWVA 169 vets. We will present the S. Korean players with our Chapter lapel pins. But, come to the games too; see Frank Keaser throw out the first pitch from your reserved chair seating behind home plate. The Korean-American Community will be involved. Both at the games and at the M&G. Now to some details. The Friday game begins at 6:00 p.m. Bob Peters, without whom we would not be involved with S. Canal St. this event, will bring his LakeFrontTB Salute Program cameras and be interviewing people before the game. Our Color Guard will present the colors at 6:00 p.m. And our Chapter will be formally acknowledged by the Press Box. That is when we need members there to pass out our Membership brochures and Application forms. The Sunday game is similar except it begins at 5:00 p.m. Same details as the Friday game though including Color Guard, and Membership efforts too. Pat Thomas Stadium, 240 Ball Park Rd, Leesburg, FL 34748, has an historic past. Built in 1937 under the W.P.A. it has seen the cleats of the likes of Hank Aaron, Pete Rose and Johnny Bench. Boat House Parking What else can I do to persuade you? Did I say Free Food at the M&G? Beautiful lounge seating? Air Conditioned? Good folks! You all come and make us look good!

Page 4 Vol. 17. No 07 July 2014 The Scuttlebutt 61st Anniversary Program 1953, Department of Florida by Tom Thiel, DoF Secretary L ast Tuesday, I met with the DoF Executive Committee; those also attending were Bob McGuire, Pres; Maxine Parker, 1st VP; Chuck Husbands 2nd VP; Joan Arcand, Treas; and Richard Arcands, Sgt at Arms. The discussion was somewhat explosive with all topics and all directions under consideration. We concluded, however, that there will be a Fall Council meeting September 20 at Merit Island Veterans Memorial Park, 400 S. Sykes Creek Pkwy, Merritt Island, FL It will start at 10:30 a.m., and last to about 4:00 p.m. We will have two concurrent sessions in the morning; one by Bob McGuire on Membership, and the other by myself on How to use the Association Membership Database. In order to have these sessions it was necessary to shrink or eliminate the Chapter presentations. They will instead be asked to provide a written copy that will then be posted on I hope that our Chapter remains well represented; since I am Secretary, I have some obligations but since I m a presenter, will not be able to do these. So I need someone to be sub. Secretary. TJT

The Scuttlebutt Vol. 17. No 07 July 2014 Color Guard Page 5 W e have a busy schedule coming up for July, Aug and Sept. On July 27, we have the 61st Armistice Presentation at the Village Mem Park. We will need four people (white gloves and overseas cap) at 10:00 a.m. On Aug, 2, we have our 61st Armistice at Veterans Memorial at Fountain Park or Leesburg Armory, if the weather is bad. This starts at 10:00 a.m., and all of us should be there. Will need four for flag bearers. On Aug. 8 we will be at Leesburg Ball Park, we will need four, dressed with gloves. We are to present colors at the start of the 6:00 p.m. game but should be early (note there is a possibility that we will either give this appearance to Chapter 188, or maybe they will want to share TBD). On August 10, we will need to place the flags at the Boat House at the start of the special Meet and Greet at 2:00 p.m. Free food and air conditioned building. Then at 5:00 p.m. we will present colors at the beginning of the game. Four people in whites and gloves. On Sept. 11, at The Villages, Remembrance Day. This is a one flag posting at 6:00 p.m. On Sept. 19, we will be at The Villages, POW/MIA Recognition Day. Again, this is a one flag posting at 10:00 p.m. On Sept. 27, I would like to get as many of us as we can for this Fund Raiser and meet and greet at the BAY VIEW RETIRMENT CEN- TER This starts at 9:00 a.m., and runs until 2:30 p.m. The address is 301 S. Bay Street, Eustis ( ). If you could get with me about which of you can make it, I will be able to set up a roster and try to keep you close to home. See you at the Fountain park Ceremony. Joel Tell America (Continued from page 1) oel Briggs reported J there were no Tell America presentations and none are planned until this fall at the earliest. Tom Thiel reported that he has produced a Tell America PowerPoint presentation that is 60 pages long with perhaps an average of 3.5 photos per page. He did this presentation largely in response to the baseball Meet and Greet program. It has been presented to the Baseball work group for conversion to a video presentation. At some future date we may want to narrate it. The final slide says Thanks to TA Presenters, and to TA Fund Drive Members. Over 50 TA Events have been held and More than 6,000 Students & Adults served. Thanks all. Tom also reported on plans for an Association Tell America Data Entry/ Report Tool as described by George Lawhorn on Page 7 of the May-June 2014 Graybeards. Primary input for this systems is to be done by Chapters, yet there was no discussion of how the system is planning on the system serving the needs of Chapters and Departments. Letters have been signed by President Wally and DoF President McGuire asking for clarification, and consideration. Rest assured that I have been promised in no uncertain terms that there will be two food lines with no other group crowding in. This is based on the many complaints I received last year. Please come to the major events we have near at hand; KSVs need you, so does your Chapter! Wally Jones
