1 Caitlin M Gale Curriculum Vitae September 2016 National Archives II: 8601 Adelphi Rd, College Park, MD, caitlin.gale@nara.gov; caitlin.maria.gale@gmail.com; EDUCATION D.Phil., History Faculty, Trinity College, University of Oxford, 2016 Dissertation: Beyond Corsairs: The British-Barbary Relationship during the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars Supervisor: NAM Rodger, All Souls College, University of Oxford I researched the relationship between Great Britain and the Barbary Regencies, looking at the role diplomacy, commerce, and trade played in that relationship over the course of the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars. I argued that the Barbary Regencies played an integral role in maintaining the supply lines of the British Royal Navy and were a source of assistance to other British interests in the Mediterranean. As part of my research, I created a database of British shipping to and from Barbary from using the Lloyd s List registry and amassing over 1,000 data points. I traced the relationship between the Barbary Regencies and Britain over the course of these two wars to see how North Africa fits into the broader narrative of the wars themselves, both diplomatically and militarily. Finally, I argued that the political change that occurred at the end of the wars in Europe contributed to an unstable economic and social situation in North Africa and that it was this turmoil, not European bombardments, that led to the end of the corsair institution.
