3 QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS FOR ENTRY LEVEL FIREFIGHTER The Board of Fire Commissioners is accepting applications for the purpose of establishing an eligibility list for Firefighter Recruit for the Milford Fire Department. This list will become effective at such time of official release by the Board and will be in effect for two (2) years from that date. HIRING PRACTICE: It is a job requirement for candidates to have and maintain their EMT status while employed as a Milford firefighter. The Milford Fire Department holds the right to select Connecticut Certified paramedics on the list over EMTs if the need within the department arises. Also, firefighters must meet the height and weight requirements during employment per contract. JOB SUMMARY: The position of firefighter will be located at one of our fire stations under the general supervision of the Fire Chief. Firefighters will perform individually and/or as a member of a firefighting team and will participate in public safety activities including firefighting, rescue, emergency medical services, ventilation, forcible entry, salvage, fire prevention, and various training sessions on a regular basis to continuously update their skills and knowledge required for effective work performance. Decisions are made with guidance of a supervisor and on an individual level and have a direct effect on life and property. General job functions include, but are not limited to: 1) firefighting; 2) emergency medical services; and 3) continuous training. JOB REQUIREMENTS: 1. Good physical condition. 2. Must be at least 18 years old at time of application closure date (April 15, 2016). 3. Pass an eye examination conforming to NFPA Ability to learn. 5. Ability to work safely in a hazardous atmosphere. 6. Ability to learn the use of both power and mechanical tools. 7. Ability to communicate both verbally and in writing. 8. Ability to work as a part of a team and independently. 9. Ability to adapt to various situations. 10. Ability to work in adverse weather conditions. 11. Ability to work irregular hours. 12. WORKING HOURS: Forty (40) or forty-two (42) hour average workweek. Hours for the first twelve (12) months are subject to the discretion of the Chief of the Department. 3
4 PROBATIONARY PERIOD: There will be a probationary period of at least twelve (12) months. VACATION: Ten (10) working days after the first year of service. If less than one year of service, one (1) working day for each month of service not to exceed five (5) working days. EXAMINATION: The full examination process will consist of the following: 1. Written Test (35% of total score) This exam is scheduled to be administered on April 27, 2016 beginning promptly at 6:30 p.m. The exam will be held at Jonathan Law High School, 20 Lansdale Avenue, Milford, CT. Candidates must present his/her picture ID to obtain admittance to this exam and bring with them a No. 2 pencil Milford Fire Department Fitness Test (35% of total score) This exam, which includes a Survival Swim test, will be held at Joseph A. Foran High School, 80 Foran Road, Milford, CT. The Milford Fire Department s web site ( will advise each candidate as to the date and time of the Fitness Test /Swim Test. The candidate must bring proper swim attire and towel. Candidates must present his/her picture ID to obtain admittance to this exam. Oral Interview(30% of total score) The Milford Fire Department s web site will notify the candidate of the specific date and time. Candidate must present his/her picture ID at the Oral Interview. Residency/Military Points Milford Residents will receive 5 points and 5 Military points added to their final score. Post Selection Selected Candidates will be offered an entry level firefighter position per the hiring practices of the City of Milford. Selected candidates must pass a background check and pre-employment medical exam as per NFPA NOTE: The Milford Fire Department holds the right to change or add testing dates for any of the exams as deemed necessary. 5 MILFORD FIRE DEPARTMENT FIREFIGHTER CANDIDATE FITNESS TEST 2016 The Candidates who successfully pass the written exam will move on to the Firefighter Candidate Fitness Test. Each candidate must check the Milford Fire Department s web site ( click on city departments, select fire department) for all scoring regarding the written examination, physical fitness test and oral examination. The Milford Fire Department s Firefighter Candidate Fitness Test is a scored Exam. To pass the entire Firefighter Fitness Test a total accumulated score of 75 points must be earned. The Survival Swim test is PASS or FAIL. If the test is Failed the candidate automatically FAILS the entire Firefighter Candidate Fitness Test. In the event of inclement weather on the date your test is scheduled, please call (203) after 5:00 a.m. and the message will advise you if the event is postponed. It is the responsibility of the candidate to check the Milford Fire Department s web site ( click on city departments, select fire department) for information pertinent to all testing. 21 Testing Battery Survival Swim: Purpose: The purpose of this test is to evaluate a candidate's ability to survive in the water by swimming and bobbing or treading water. Rationale: Milford is a city with an extensive coastline. With many community activities and coastal related storm emergencies, firefighters are required to perform water rescues and emergency tasks in proximity to water. Firefighters must be able to survive in the water when put in those situations. Scoring: The survival swim will consist of two (2) parts. Both parts will take place in an indoor Olympic size pool under controlled conditions with lifeguards and a safety crew present. 1. Part one is an untimed surface swim for 100 Meters(4lengths of the pool). The candidate must continuously swim 100 Meters using any combinations of these four strokes: Crawl Stroke, Breast Stroke, Back Stroke (the arms must come out of the water) or the Side Stroke. The Dog Paddle or any other Survival Stroke cannot be used. Swimming must be continuous, except to change strokes. The bottom or sides of the pool must not be touched except to turn at each end of the pool. 2. Part two shall take place immediately upon completion of part one, without a rest. Upon completion of the 100 meter swim the candidate will tread water or bob in a fashion to remain buoyant without grabbing hold of the side for a period of 5 minutes. Once again, the survival swim test is a pass/fail event. Candidates that pass the survival swim test shall proceed to the Firefighter Fitness portion of the exam. Candidates who appear to be in danger based on the assessment of the safety crew or require assistance to remain buoyant will be removed from the test and will not pass.
22 Pull Ups: Purpose: The purpose of this test is to evaluate a candidate's upper body pulling ability and strength. Rationale: Upper body pulling ability and strength are needed to perform specific firefighter duties. Scoring: Points are awarded according to the number of repetitions and are gender specific. 23 Push Ups: Purpose: The purpose of this test is to evaluate a candidate's chest and arm muscular endurance. Rationale: Chest and arm muscular endurance are needed to perform firefighter duties. 24 Curl Up Test: Purpose: The purpose of this test is to evaluate a candidate's abdominal musculature endurance. Rationale: Weak abdominal muscular endurance contributes to lower back problems and can be related to other musculoskeletal injuries. 25 Long Jump: Purpose: The purpose of this test is to evaluate a candidate's leg power by determining the distance the candidate can jump across the floor.
