Although aerial target operations were minimal due to overall availability of the Navy's BQM-74C aerial targets, significant operational events occurred with the Pioneer Remotely Piloted Vehicle (RPV) and surface targets. The Pioneer RPV detachment completed its first deployment aboard USS IOWA. While under arduous conditions in the Persian Gulf, the RPV detachment achieved 100 percent full mission capability for the system. The detachment developed RPV NATOPS for pre-launch/launch/post-launch/recovery evolutions for the Mission Commander, Internal Pilot, Payload Operator, External Pilot, Crew Chief, Officer of the Deck and Tactical Action Officer. Additionally, the detachment also developed coordinating procedures to extend the role of the RPV to augment other battlegroup air assets for coordinating BB/CVW gunlair strike tactics with RPV NGFS and 'Bird Dog' support. The RPV coordinated SSC-VID operations with the LAMP MK The surface target detachment at NAB Little Creek increased the number of surface operations due to operational commitments for the Persian Gulf. 4 Encl (1)

6 Additionally, the following two firsts occurred in 1988: - First successful surface to surface missile shot from a CV occurred during the sinking of a QST-35 target by missile crews of the USS JOHN F. KENNEDY. - First establishment of surface target operations in Mayport, Florida in support of the DESRONs. The aerial target detachment at Dam Neck completed their first total training exercise utilizing a rebuilt target known as the Phoenix. 4. Supporting Documents a.
