In accordance with reference (a), enclosure (1) is forwarded. Enclosure (1) comprises VRC-40 History for calendar year Copy to : DIRECTOR OF NAVAL HISTORY COMNAVAIRLANT COMTACSUPWING ONE
2 BASIC HISTORY 1978 Prior to September 1978, VRC-40 exclusively flew the Grumman built C-1A "Trader" aircraft for Carrier Onboard Delivery (COD). In September 1978, VRC-40 acquired four CT-39 "Sabreliners" for the primary mission of providing executive airlift and support of Navy aircraft ferry operations throughout the United States. These aircraft can transport six passengers in great comfort, up t; 1,300 pounds of cargo, or a combination of both. They have a cruise speed of 430 knots and a range of some 1,500 miles. With the increase in the number of aircraft came an increase in the number of squadron personnel. The squadron ranks swelled. to 185 enlisted men and women and 43 officers. Among the new additions, VRC-40 acquired it's first female aviator. With the increase in mission requirements, the squadron was divided into three shifts to enable it to provide round-the-clock fleet support. During 1978 VRC-40 surpassed 51,207 accident free flight hours culminating 121 months of accident free flying. The 5,372.4 flight hours for the year provided over 255,000 pounds of mail and cargo and 6,900 passengers to the fleet. In July 1978 VRC-40 was awarded the CNO Aviation Safety Award for 1977 in recognition of its achievement from late 1976 through VRC-40 was awarded the Navy Unit Commendat ion in July Commander James F. Duffy served as Commanding Officer of VRC-40 for the entire year. Commander Fleet Tactical Support Wing ONE, VRC-40's reporting senior was Captain John E. Pagnelli.
