Public Affairs O n the morning of May 20, Paratroopers assigned to the 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division assembled on Pike Field. Their uniforms, unit colors waving in the breeze; displaying the regimental insignias of storied units. The 4,500 Paratroopers stand ready to witness a change of command in new brigade leadership. The weather that morning did seem to fit the circumstances. One could say the dark clouds represented the end of times and the rain may symbolize tears of sadness or joy. Suddenly as the time inched closer to the ceremony, the sun started peeking, clouds began to disperse and by time the ceremony began a gorgeous morning had blossomed. The morning welcomed Col. Gregory Beaudoin and his family to the 3rd BCT and honored the outgoing commander Col. Curtis Buzzard. Col. Curtis Buzzard assumed command of the brigade June 17, When Col. Buzzard took command in 2014 it could not of been a busier time for the brigade, said Maj. Gen. Richard Clarke, commander of the 82nd Abn. Div. They were all on call as the nation`s global response force. There was no easing in to the position, but Curtis did a remarkable job. He made readiness a priority, he empowered leaders and did it all while caring for Paratroopers. The consistent readiness and strength of the brigade soon followed Buzzard and his brigade to Iraq, January 2015 in support of Operation Inherent Resolve. There, Buzzard led his Paratroopers in an Advise and Assist mission alongside Iraqi Army during a nine month deployment. In October 2015, Buzzard arrived home to Fort Bragg with every single Paratrooper whom was called upon to deploy. Buzzard says this is not my ceremony but theirs [paratroopers], these guys went from global response force to a short notice deployment. They came back integrated their surge ready force and continued readiness and training, recently completing company level live-fire exercises. With that I say Thank You. As the band plays, the color guards marches, and Paratroopers stand tall; the brigade now opens a new chapter in their history and lineage, beginning a new command cycle with Beaudoin. Beaudoin was the commander of 1st Battalion, 506th Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division from He then attended the National War College at Fort McNair, Washington D.C. Beaudoin served on the division staff deployed to Iraq in support of OIR. I am truly humbled and honored to serve with and for the Panther Brigade, said Beaudoin. As you prepare to jump, fight and win tonight! Airborne All the Way Ready H- Minus! Anthony Hewitt/Released) Starting Monday, May 23, about 15,000 Paratroopers from the 82nd Airborne Division began their morning and week like most Paratroopers do, with a motivated and thunderous. However, this is not just any week it`s the 2016 All-American Week. Shortly after Paratroopers completed their run, many began to show their competitive spirit by participating in sporting events, such as soccer, football, softball, tug-of-war and even beanbag tossing. These games represent All-American Week because we recognize that it`s more than just ourselves, said 2nd Lt. Barry Ball, a coach for the 82nd Brigade Support Battalion, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Abn. Div. soccer team. Every move we make out there on the field is to represent our unit and be apart of our team, it`s about camaraderie. Shouts of spectating Paratroopers and their families cheer on the many teams from Towle Stadium to Ritz-Epps field where all the competitions take place. However, the loudest cheers are coming from the reigning softball champions from 2015 All American week, Paratroopers from 1st Squadron, 73rd Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team. Staff Sgt. Daniel Mc- Duffy assigned to 1st Sqd., 73rd Cav. Rgt. Says We come out here with a plan, and with each other. No team wins with justone person. We`ve been training together for about two years now. We take our brotherhood from out in the field to this field and that`s how we are winners. The Taylor-Sandri Medical Training Center was rededicated in honor of Lt. Col. Mark Taylor of Stockton, California, assigned to the 782nd Main Support Battalion, 82nd Airborne Division, and Sgt. Matthew Sandri of Shamokin, Pennsylvania, assigned to 82nd Forward Support Battalion, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Abn. Div. Taylor and Sandri were killed in action on March 20, 2004 from injuries sustained during a rocket attack on the clinic where they were performing their medical duties in Fallujah, Iraq. The rededicated facility is equipped to train Soldiers to use life-saving skills under pressure. On the other side of Fort Bragg, the Troop and Family Medical Clinic was renamed in honor of World War II fallen Paratrooper Pvt. Kelly Byars. Byars, a combat medic assigned to 1st Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 3rd BCT, 82nd Abn. Div., was awarded the Silver Star for his actions on September 20, 1944, in Holland. Byars risked his life under heavy machine gun fire to treat and save several other Paratroopers. We couldn t find any family of Pvt. Byars for this ceremony, said Col. Lance Raney, commander of Womack Army Medical Center. So today we name this clinic in his honor and welcome him into our Family. Maj. Gen. Richard Clarke, commander of the 82nd Abn. 8 Page 13 -Static Line- May-June-July Static Line- Page 14 AAW16 Little Group of Paratroopers Competition By Staff Sgt. Christopher Freeman, 82nd Combat Aviation Brigade Public Affairs After the demise of the best Airborne plan, a most terrifying effect occurs on the battlefield. This effect is known as the rule of the LGOPs or Little Group of Paratroopers. Twenty-five teams of Paratroopers from the 82nd Airborne Division competed to determine who was the most proficient in the Paratrooper Essential Task List though a series of assessments at Fort Bragg, N.C., May 23. The event saw the paratroopers tested on rigging their equipment, actions in the aircraft, rendering their equipment for service, establishing communication and a layout of required gear. (The competition) consisted of nine-man teams jumping from a CH-47 Chinook from the 82nd Combat Aviation Brigade and performing our duties as Paratroopers in the shortest amount of time safely, said Sgt. Daniel Fienco, battalion air noncommissioned officer, 307th Engineer Battalion, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division. The competition was for time and pitted each battalion against one another. The hardest part was trying to make sure we made time while rigging our equipment for the operation, said Fienco. This is what we train for constantly. Now we get to test ourselves against the other battalions in the division. The event showcased the teamwork that is seen all across the Division. Even though the Paratroopers were graded individually, they had to operate as a team to accomplish all required tasks. I look at it as it makes us a stronger team, said Fienco. Competing like this helps bring us closer together as a unit. I got to lead from the front of my team. The competition began early in the morning with equipment draw and briefs. We showed up at 4:30 a.m. to accountability and secure our gear, said Fienco. We then went to Green Ramp for a brief that included standards for success. Immediately following that, we were given 15 minutes to rig our ruck or face a penalty. For Fienco, being a Paratrooper carries a special meaning. I earned the title of Paratrooper, said Fienco. On a previous jump, I sustained a serious injury and it took me a long time to get back to where I can jump again. I jumped today in my seventh and final All American Week. I am going to miss it. This has been home to me for the last nine years. For infantryman Spc. Tristan Nuziard with 2nd Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 3rd BCT, the event helped carry on a family legacy. On my dad s side dating back three generations, they have all been involved in All American Weeks, said Nuziard. It fills my heart with joy to be able to continue this family tradition. I hope my son gets to experience the tradition. Even though the event carried on a family tradition, the paratroopers enjoyed the event and fostered stronger teams through the Division. We operated in small teams justifying the name LGOP, said Fienco. It showcases the skills that the 82nd Abn. Div. is known for. This competition helps all the units involved to become better Paratroopers. Staff Sgt. 10 Page 17 -Static Line- May-June-July Static Line- Page CAV medics, new equipment feedback to Army agency BY SGT ANTHONY HEWITT 3RD BRIGADE COMBAT TEAM PUBLIC AFFAIRS BY 3rd BCT train to evacuate Americans BY SGT ANTHONY HEWITT 3RD BRIGADE COMBAT TEAM PUBLIC AFFAIRS The U.S. Army and its agencies are known for seeking out new and innovative ideas that may enable the force to become more efficient and effective. One such agency is U.S. Army Medical Materiel Agency (USAMMA), specializing in the development of medical supplies and equipment. A group of project managers and biomedical engineers from USAMMA visited Fort Bragg, June 22-23, engaging with Paratroopers from the 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division during a joint operational access exercise Operation Panther Shield. In order for equipment to evolve and improve, we need to listen and understand what the Soldiers need first-hand, said Maj. Torrence Beck, a deputy project manager for medical devices at USAM- MA. Whether it`s brand-new or been in use for years, the Soldier`s voice and experience is how we can become better. Paratrooper medics assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Troop, 5th Squadron, 73rd Cavalry Regiment, 3rd BCT, 82nd Abn. Div. recently became the primary operators of brand new equipment. an Oxygen Generation Field Portable (OGFP) tank, a 12lb oxygen machine that uses fresh ambient air to produce pure oxygen. Right now there are only three OGFPs in distribution across the force, said Beck. [5-73rd CAV] has one and they are the very first medics to use the machine in a field training environment. So it was very important that we were able to speak and interact with this unit. 5-73rd CAV integrated the new equipment into their medical training lanes during the 3rd BCT field training exercise and demonstrations for USAMMA personnel. Paratroopers provided candid feedback when asked for their professional opinions and experiences about the device. Sgt. Thomas Wachter, a Paratrooper assigned to HHT, 5-73rd, 3rd BCT, 82nd Abn. Div. says that the OGFP is portable and generates reoccurring oxygen, which is great, but it doesn t push enough liters per minute. In a trauma situation you need a high flow of oxygen; generally liters per minute. During his use of the device, the output of the machine measured three liters per minute. The squadron s medical staff were aware of USAMMA`s visit before hand, Sgt. Thomas Wachter, a Paratrooper assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Troop, 5th Squadron, 73rd Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division provides feedback about new medical equipment to employees from the United States Army Medical Material Agency during a joint training exercise at Fort Bragg, June 23, (U.S. Army photo by Sgt. Anthony Hewitt/ Released) and prepared to share their feedback with the team. During the equipment training, they were ready to share their voice in hopes that they would be able to make a difference. During the visit, the notepads were out, USAMMA personnel actively taking copious notes. The team intently watched and listened to the medic s demonstrations. Wachter says if you bring the oxygen saturation down and bring your liters per minute up, it would very effective and can be used all over the battlefield. According to Beck, this is what USAMMA has plans to distribute Army-wide sometime within the next months. The medics suggested methods that can make the machine more effective right now. If you connect more than one [OGFP] unit together you may get a consistent flow of oxygen that will supplement a patient, said Wachter. The best situation we can suggest for immediate use is to connect more than one together and use during patient transportation while they`re stable. This concept has it`s merits for right now, however, there is definitely great potential that can come from this, said Wachter. I`m more than confident that [USAMMA] will take our feedback into serious consideration in hopes for a more effective machine. It was great meeting these folks not only for the new machine, but we were able to give them so many ideas and suggestions on lots of other equipment and they were very attentive about our ideas, that s exciting. In the fictional country of Atropia, the people recently lost their president to an un-expected death. The president`s son takes control and rejects elections and amends constitutions. Rebellious students and other citizens form the South Atropian Peoples Army (SAPA) a group seeking to transform Atropia and force their own beliefs upon the population. The violent activities of SAPA become more frequent and friendly Atropian forces are in need of assistance, the U.S. places SAPA under international sanctions. SAPA begins to threaten the U.S. Embassy and its officials. The enemy has now indicated its threat to acquire chemical materials in order enable maximum terror among the local and foreign populace. The time has come to evacuate and bring any and all American citizens home. The global response force deploys to assist in non-combatant evacuation operations (NEO) and secure the U.S. Embassy. This was the simulated scenario included during the joint operational access exercise conducted by Soldiers assigned to and in support of 3rd Brigade Combat Team 82nd Airborne Division; the 16th Military Police Brigade, 82nd Combat Aviation Brigade, and representatives from the U.S. State Department, June 22, at Holland Drop Zone. Using the scenario the Soldiers and role-players were given, those participating in the training reacted accordingly. Staff Sgt. Shayse Stokes, a Paratrooper assigned to 108th MP Company, 503rd MP Battalion (Airborne), 16th MP Bde. says our job as military police is to consolidate, extract and protect the American citizens in order to remove them from whatever country they are in. We then brought them to the evacuation control center; where they will be briefed, searched and processed for travel to a safe haven and in the event of an actual NEO, eventually back to the United States. In charge of the NEOs is the ambassador; serving as the U.S. president representative and authority he is directly responsible for the safe evacuation of American citizens. Supporting the operations are three main components for a military based initiative, The State Department, Department of Defense and usually a swift insertion force involving temporary occupation and a planned withdraw. Allyn Brooks-LaSure, a public diplomatic officer from the State Department says in the past it has been Marines conducting these missions. Today we are here to support and observe the Department of the Army execute and train to prepare for these scenarios. Capt. Bill Seskey, a Paratrooper assigned to 3rd BCT, as a civil affairs planner says it`s important for us to be trained and ready to conduct these types of operations. The brigade will eventually be the global response force and possibly be called upon to conduct these operations. As the day went moved forward during the training exercise, Paratroopers established security, processed role-players and eventually executing the steps required being successful during the training. The biggest takeaways for the leaders in this brigade during the exercise is understanding 3rd brigade`s role with partnered government agencies, said Seskey. According to Seskey, we absolutely need to have the ability to evacuate your own people and safeguard American people abroad, if not then could hinder our ability as a nation to establish relations with other countries and conduct foreign policy. This is not a hollow exercise. The mission that this unit is performing has real world implications and can be the difference between life and death for American citizens, said Brooks-LaSure. We have no greater responsibility than protecting and advancing U.S. personnel and interest abroad, so when we`re in a situation where there is political instability American citizens are calling upon us. This exercise reinforces our capabilities to work jointly and extend this service to American in need. 12 Page 21 -Static Line- May-June-July Static Line- Page 22 3rd Brigade Combat Team returns to New Orleans BY CAPT. JOHN MOORE 3RD BRIGADE COMBAT TEAM PUBLIC AFFAIRS The last time the 3 rd Brigade Combat Team, 82 nd Airborne Division was in New Orleans was September Then, they patrolled the streets on foot and in boats, hoping to find survivors and provide a helping hand to anyone during their time of need. On July 15, 2016, they took an opportunity to pay homage to those who lost their lives during the hurricane, and to enhance their knowledge of the unit in which they serve, while visiting the National WWII Museum. It s humbling to be in New Orleans 11 years after such a catastrophic event devastated the Gulf Coast, said Col. Gregory B. Beaudoin, 3 rd BCT, 82 nd Abn. Div. commander. I m proud of 3 rd Brigade s contributions to our nation during such an uncertain time. The readiness and selfless service of our Paratroopers set the example for others to follow. The ten-year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina occurred during During that time, the 3 rd BCT was again making history, this time in support of Operation Inherent Resolve. While overseas, Paratroopers diligently trained Iraqi Security Forces as part of the anti-isil campaign. Due to the deployment, the brigade could not attend the remembrance activities; unable to stand in somber solidarity with numerous others there. Unit history is important to many soldiers throughout the United States Army, perhaps nowhere more than in the 82 nd Airborne Division. To that end, Paratroopers from the brigade visited the National WWII Museum in New Orleans. There, they learned more about the campaigns in which the brigade served since its inception on July 6, I ve visited a few different military museums in my lifetime, many of which had exhibits containing history of the 82 nd Abn. Div., said Command Sgt. Maj. Andrew T. Bristow II, 1st Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment senior enlisted Paratrooper. While many have the same historical events pertaining to 3 rd Brigade, each museum is a little different. It s inspiring to have this opportunity to visit yet another, and learn more about this storied unit. The Paratroopers that toured the museum today will undoubtedly have something to carry forward with them for the rest of their lives. New Orleans community leaders took time out of their busy schedules to thank the servicemembers for their contributions. Councilmembers Susan G. Guidry (District A), and James A. Gray II (District E), stopped by to show their support for the Brigade. I was here every day [following Hurricane Katrina], said Gray. I m really glad you came. Everyone was much calmer, much more collected after that. Councilmember at-large Jason R. Williams also expressed his appreciation for the brigade s contributions. I sincerely appreciate the service that the brigade selflessly gave our city during our darkest hour, said Williams.
