AIR. in the STORY MSG (NCC) Nur Hariyah Binte Juraime PHOTOS 3SG Ng Jun Quan Changkat Changi Secondary School Our school held a combined Uniformed Groups Passing Out Parade (POP) on 19 May When I found out that I was appointed as the Parade Commander, I was very worried that it might not turn out well. However, with 3WO Siva's guidance, the parade turned out better than what I expected as he helped minimise the drill movements needed, and was very considerate about the cadets' welfare. After the combined parade in the hall, there was a separate POP Ceremony for NCC. Both Boys and Girls squadrons were very honoured to have the various NCC District Commanders and Head Information and Management as our Guests-of-Honour. As the Senior Cadet Leaders were standing outside the AVA room waiting for the cue to commence, we were afraid that we might mess things up. However, I was relieved that everything went well. Reflecting on my four years in NCC, I realised that I have grown to become a better person as I can now endure hardships, be tough and resilient, be more self-discipline and be able to care for my fellow cadets. By upholding the values of NCC, I am able to lead my juniors and flight mates by example. I have learnt that being a leader requires a lot of endurance and commitment. Though there were many downfalls in my journey as the Unit Sergeant Major, I have become more patient and responsible in accomplishing the tasks assigned to me. Moreover, I had the privilege of working with the different uniformed groups both within and outside of school, which further developed my leadership skills as well as my ability to work in a team. Therefore, I am glad that I chose NCC as my CCA because it has not only helped me to be a better person with good values, it also given me the opportunity to grow as a leader. 3

on the LAND. On the 16 th of April 2016, Anglo-Chinese School (Independent) held its Open House to better inform both prospective students and parents about the school and its facilities, its school programmes and activities. The NCC (Land) unit contributed with performances by the Precision Drill Squad (PDS). STORY MSG (NCC) Lim Jia Shen, Arnest 3SG (NCC) Tan Hao Wei PHOTOS Anglo-Chinese School (Independent), LAND The team participated in the 7 th NCC Precision Drill Squad Competition earlier in March, so the team members had to get together again to practise and ensure that we would put up a good performance in front of the many visitors. Training for PDS is always a challenge as cadets may have other commitments and activities in school. This made it difficult to practise together as a team, which was imperative in putting up a well-coordinated performance. Cadets learnt to be disciplined and prioritise their time and activities to make time for PDS training sessions. 3SG Tan Hao Wei during PDS competition. The training sessions were also physically demanding which made it challenging for some cadets to keep up. After repeated p r a c t i c e s, c a d e t s o f t e n l o s e t h e i r concentration or are unable to carry out the routine correctly due to fatigue. With constant encouragement from the seniors, cadets persevered through the tough trainings to improve in their performance as well as in their fitness. The whole experience will help cadets to improve their time management, self-control and perseverance. Although cadets will face other challenges in school, these key values will help them to do their best in all their future endeavours. Our leadership skills were also cultivated as we had to learn how to impart the PDS skills to our fellow cadets. Ultimately, it was an amazing and memorable experience for all involved, and the values that we have acquired will greatly benefit us in the future in NCC, in school and in life. 4

PHOTOS 3SG Ng Jun Quan & 3SG Aloysious How A New Journey Begins... In this series, we will be looking at the Affirma5on Ceremonies of the five Districts of NCC to welcome our junior cadets.

from The Central District s Affirmation Ceremony was held on 16 April 2016, Saturday, at Pasir Laba Camp. 840 junior cadets from over 40 schools from Central District attended this ceremony. The newly-inaugurated junior cadets were treated to a fascinating display of performances and activities which showcased the wide range of programmes offered in the National Cadet Corps. Cedar Girls Secondary School and Woodlands Ring Secondary School left the audience in awe with their smartly executed and well-coordinated Precision Drill and Freestyle Exhibition Drill. Some junior cadets were invited on stage for a Camouflage competition, in which they have to apply green and black camouflage cream on their faces. All junior cadets who attended the ceremony were also given NCC magnetic bookmarks, stickers, post-it pads and phone straps. The cadet officers sacrificed their precious time to plan for this event. They worked handin-hand to set up the place and organise the schools during the actual day. All of them had a common goal, which was to give the junior cadets a warm welcome into the NCC family. 7 Pasir Laba Camp. This was the first time that NCC Central District is holding its Affirmation Ceremony in Specialist Cadet School, Leaders Hall. This allowed the cadets to enjoy a whole new experience of being invited to join the NCC family in the the birth place of SAF s Warrant Officers and Specialists. The ceremony was held in this place to inspire cadets to be a good leader in the near future when they have junior cadets under them. The phrase With Pride, We Lead reminds us to always take pride in the things we do. 7

The junior cadets were treated to a fascinating array of Army weaponry and equipment. They had the opportunity to handle the M203 Grenade Launcher, the Matador, the Section Assault Weapon (SAW) and the General Purpose Machine Gun (GPMG). The West District Specialist and Training Coordinating Officer were there to teach and guide them on how to operate the different weapons and how they function. Apart from that, they got to see the Army vehicles that were used for transportation. Pictures of the various vehicles and weapons are shown below. The junior cadets were very excited to try carrying the different weapons. Last but not least, the junior cadets were brought around the Standard Obstacle Course, also known as the SOC. They were taught how to clear the twelve stations swiftly and safely. Junior cadet trying out the matador. M203 on SAR21 GPMG 5-Tonner Recce Bike MATADOR SAW Operations Utility Vehicle Unimog 8

thoughts of a Cadet Officer STORY C/LTA Pok Chuan Han, Overall-in-Charge PHOTOS 3SG Aloysious How The West Affirmation Ceremony, the first event a cadet in NCC will attend, has always been known to be a highlight of our journey in the NCC. Thus, planning and executing the affirmation ceremony was definitely no easy task. We had to constantly keep in mind that whatever we present to our junior cadets must be able to inspire them and ignite their passion for the NCC. This motivated us greatly, as we were not planning just any ordinary ceremony but one that the junior cadets will remember throughout their NCC journey and beyond. As my team and I progressed from the planning to the execution of the affirmation ceremony, I believe we all learnt the true spirit of passion and resilience. Faced with many challenges, we had to constantly remind ourselves about the reasons for which we chose to be a part of this ceremony; about how we want to make a difference to every single cadet who signed up with NCC. Being a part of this organising team has allowed me to give back to the NCC for all the opportunities it has given me. Through our efforts, we hope to have shared with the junior cadets the values which NCC has taught us, and that it's their turn to embark on this wonderful journey. The Affirmation Ceremony might be over, but the smiles of the Junior Cadets as they left the ceremony certainly reassured us that their journey in the NCC has had a wonderful start. To all the Junior Cadets who are now a part of the NCC family, we warmly welcome you and hope that every one of you will be able to write your own NCC story, and that it is filled with joy, laughter, everlasting friendship; memories which will forever be etched in your mind. To serve with pride and dedication 9

from East district Unlike the other districts, the East District Affirmation was not held in a military camp but instead at Victoria School. Interactive booths such as a mini airsoft range and basic face painting camouflaging skills were set up in the canteen to let the Secondary One Cadets have a feel of what their next 4 years of NCC would be like. It was an honour to have Brigadier General (NS) Goh Kee Nguan as our Guest of Honour to oversee the Affirmation Ceremony. Performances such as the Freestyle and Precision Drills were shown during the ceremony as part of an introductory skid to NCC life. 10

Air The Air Affirmation Ceremony for our new batch of Junior Cadets took place in Paya Lebar Air Base, Air Force Training Command s auditorium. We were honoured to have with us COL Tan Yik, Head Air Training, HQ Republic of Singapore Air Force as our Guest-of-Honour on that day. The new junior cadets were welcomed into our NCC family, pledging before COL Tan and our Commandant to be loyal to Singapore and the Corps, and to maintain a high standard of discipline and performance. from district COL Tan was also invited to present Outstanding Cadet Awards to four Senior Cadet Leaders, in recognition of their outstanding contribution to NCC. This also served as an excellent opportunity to encourage the newlyinaugurated Junior Cadets, who are just starting on this new journey, to look up to those who have gone before them and who have excelled along the way as role models to emulate. The audience were also treated to well-rehearsed renditions of Runaway Baby by Bruno Mars, performed by our very own NCC Command Band Swiss Winds, alongside Auxiliary Instructors from the NCC Precision Drill Squad. The performance visibly awed many in the audience The PRIDE team would like to take this opportunity to wish all the Junior Cadets from across the five districts a meaningful and exciting journey of learning and growth ahead 11

Thinking Back I am glad we were able to formally welcome the Junior Cadets into NCC(Air) and get the chance to see the thrill in their eyes while they got to know more about what the National Cadet Corps(NCC) experience is all about. Through our Dynamics Display, videos, skit, Freestyle Exhibition Drill, Precision Drill and the Swiss Winds performances, I began to reminisce how wonderful my 5 years in NCC has been. STORY C/LTA Lin Jin Hao, Overall-in-Charge PHOTOS 3SG Aloysious How A cadet officer s thoughts on seeing a new batch of Junior Cadets joining the NCC family. In the planning of the Affirmation Ceremony, countless hours were sacrificed. The Cadet Officers and Associate Members worked together with the aim of putting up the perfect performance for our audience. Beyond being just another platform for us to exercise and hone our creativity, organisational skills and ability to think critically, to me, our Affirmation Ceremony was an invaluable process where friendships were strengthened. We supported one another through challenges and grew into greater leaders. Similarly, sacrifices will be made throughout the Junior Cadets NCC journey especially when they eventually become Cadet Leaders and experience organising and planning their own events, school camps and school trainings. By the time their NCC journey ends, I hope that they would realise that what is truly important are the friendships forged and the valuable life lessons learnt, for their achievements in NCC may eventually be forgotten. However, the camaraderie between their fellow NCC mates, the life skills and values learnt will definitely stay with them forever, helping them overcome all the obstacles they may face in the future. These will allow them to be a better person and also better contribute to our nation, Singapore. As they donned on their ranks, I could not help but have a familiar feeling of excitement for our young leaders, for what they saw on that day was merely the surface of what they can expect from their 4 to 5 years in NCC(Air). As much as their cheers filled the auditorium from having an enjoyable experience in the Air Affirmation Ceremony, I believe NCC will be a fulfilling journey which the Junior Cadets will cherish for life 12

STORY & PHOTOS 3SG Aloysious How Endurance in the BLUES. I learnt that endurance is very important and we as leaders must instill values like this in our cadets so they can continue our legacy. 3SG (NCC) Muhammad Daniyal Yishun Secondary School I learnt that I have the responsibility to take care of and control my platoon mates for the best interest of the expedition. CPL (NCC) Ram Narayanan Victoria School Responsibility Leadership We went for extra kayaking together with our platoon mates who need to clock their distance for AKE, even when we did not have to. 3SG (NCC) Danish Faryadi Tanjong Katong Secondary School The expedition developed my leadership and fighting spirit to persevere through the course. 3SG (NCC) Nicholas Leong Anglo-Chinese School (Barker Road) Care for Cadets 13

Annual Kayaking Expedition The leader does not finish first; the leader leads the team to finish together. -CPT (NCC) Kang Teck Beng Sea District Commander The Annual Kayaking Expedition is a 3- day programme in which around 100 privileged cadets who have passed a selection test will participate. Cadet s Thoughts STORY 3SG (NCC) Julian Fan PHOTOS 3SG Aloysious How The Annual Kayaking Expedition (AKE) has been a very fun but extremely arduous experience for me. We have endured so much in not only the actual expedition itself, but also in the 2 selections and the Mini Kayaking Expedition(MKE). I am Julian Fan, from St Patrick s School NCC (Air) and here is my experience of the two selections, the Mini Kayaking Expedition (MKE), and the Annual Kayaking Expedition (AKE). When I first heard about the AKE from my teacher officer, I was thrilled. I took up the offer to participate and became the sole representative of from St. Patrick s. Soon after, the first selection was taking place. The weather was okay, everything was smooth and we finished the 1st selection in no time. The next selection took place at the SAF Yacht Club. I was happy to see familiar faces although there were less of them now, due to their failing of the first selection. Expectedly, the 2nd selection was way harder than the first. I have to admit, I was not one of the fittest. I was struggling behind the entire group of kayaks and they were getting farther away. Luckily, I still managed to get through the second selection, although barely. Eventually, the day of MKE arrived. The MKE was a day-long event, and it was tiring. The worst part was at noon, when the sun was at its highest and there were no clouds to protect its menacing rays from us. It was scorching and uncomfortable, and we lost our morale. However, we persisted and managed to get through with it. Again, I barely got a spot in the AKE. Having completed all the selections, we were going to face the real deal. 14

The first day of AKE was mainly for setting up the kayaks and bonding with other participants. The second day was the time when we had to kayak. The temperature was already hot early in the morning and I wished for heavy rain while working out a big sweat kayaking. Thankfully my wishes were answered, for a thunderstorm appeared and rained heavily for a few hours, which cut down the distance we had to kayak. Soon, after completing our kayaking, we were ready to set up our sleeping area in the Sembawang Camp. We slept with discomfort on the hard wooden floor. The third day started with more strenuous kayaking. However, the weather was on our side now. Large clouds blocked the sun for us and made the expedition much easier. However, another storm lurked when we were in the middle of our kayaking session and we had to put more energy into the paddles to escape it. After completing the day s session, we packed our bags and were ready to go to the Kallang Sea Training Centre. Being utterly exhausted, our eyes glowed as we saw the barbecued food, sponsored by our Sea District commander, Captain Kang. It was the most delicious barbecue I ve had in my entire life Apart from that, I enjoyed the bonding time with all the participants. Alas, it was final day that ends our separation from a luxurious bath and much-needed sleep. We were with filled energy and the determination to get this over and done with. We had to kayak 3 rounds around a reservoir. It was rightfully a simple task and we completed it with ease, but by the 4th day all our arms were drained of any energy and we had to encourage each other to keep moving. Ultimately, we made it, and before we knew it, it was time for the prize presentation. Each and every one of us, despite our fatigue, managed to force ourselves to smile for the pictures. The Commandant of NCC, LTC Richard Koh graced the event to present us with badges for completing the AKE. Finally, it was over. I, for one, was elated that I ve successfully completed the event and can head home proud, catch up on lost sleep and get rid of my stench by taking a good shower. Above all, it was a great albeit tiring experience and I would love to participate in such activities again. 15

life Boat Crew of a STORY 3SG (NCC) Chu Ting, Associate Member PHOTOS 3SG Aloysious How When I was still a cadet, I have always wanted to be a Cadet Officer. However, I was not able to meet the criteria for the Cadet Officer Course. I was so dejected as I thought my NCC journey will end right after my secondary school, until C/CPT Shahrudin came to me and introduce the Associate Member (AM) Scheme to me. With his encouragement and support, I signed up for it to contribute to the NCC Sea District. Till now, I have never ever regretted becoming an Associate Member. Participating in the Annual Kayaking Expedition (AKE) was my goal during my cadet days. It is one of the biggest event that Sea District has. However, I did not manage to complete it back then, so I seized the opportunity without a second thought once I became an Associate Member. During the 42 nd AKE, I took up the role of a boat crew. As a boat crew, I had to keep a lookout for the cadets safety, assist the boat commander, and recover kayaks when the cadets capsize in the sea. These made me able to react to situations more swiftly and also have better self-discipline. There are many challenges I faced along the way as an Associate Member. In the past, I was not very active in HQ NCC, and hence I was unable to catch up with the other Cadet Officers and Associate Members who have been serving for a long time. With the help of the Sea District family, I overcame all these challenges and also learnt many valuable lessons from them. Stay hungry. Stay foolish. A quote by Steve Jobs that I always hold close to my heart. Always stay hungry for knowledge and be bold enough to expose yourself to new and different experiences in life. I m very proud that I have made the decision to become an Associate Member. 16

STORY 3SG Aloysious How PHOTOS 3SG Aloysious How race of the Dragons The Sea District signed their cadets up for the DBS Marina Regatta competition where NCC Sea units compete among themselves for the top 3 positions. I witnessed the cadets fighting spirit and perseverance even when they were very tired after several rounds of 200m races. Teamwork was shown in how the cadets paddle together as a team and encourage each other to push on so that they can achieve the timing that they aimed for. Paddling the boat might seem easy, but being able to paddle together as a team is certainly tough. The drummer is there to give the rhythm for the paddlers to follow and also to give them moral support. No matter what results the cadets obtained, I could see from their faces that they enjoyed this event very much Congrats Maris Stella NCC Sea for being the overall champions for this Dragon Boat Competition 17

NO, THEIR NAMES ARE NOT SILVER OR MSG (NCC) Bronze Teo Jun Tao Marsiling Secondary School NCC Sea This was the automatic response I got when I asked what his two older brothers names were. Both of us burst into laughter. He may seem like just another ordinary student, but there is definitely more to this individual that meets the eye. When asked about his relationship with his family, he answered, I am really close to my parents. I find that I can open myself up to them. If I have any problems, I am able to share it with them. When asked if he was the only child, Bronze added, I have two older brothers. No, their names are NOT Silver and Gold. I didn't even have to ask for him to say this. As it turns out, his older brother Jerman, 25, is in the Singapore Police Force. The middle child, Canyon, is 18 and currently studying in a Junior College. Bronze explained that his eldest brother guided him during the early phase, like showing him how to fold his uniform's sleeve properly. STORY Jeremy Ang PHOTOS Jeremy Ang Also, Jerman was part of the SPF's Passing Out Parade's Guard of Honor contingent. I was inspired by my brother's performance in the parade. I guess that's where I drew some inspiration from. Constituting one of his more ambitious goals would be that he aims to bring his unit to attain a 'front-runner' status. However, this is second to his primary belief that though achieving awards is definitely a plus point, the character development of his juniors is of utmost importance. Although we don't win a lot of competitions like some other schools, as long as I know that my juniors' discipline and attitude are of good standards, that is good enough for me. Spoken like a true leader. When it comes to fitness, Bronze is a good example of someone that takes this matter seriously. He frequents the gym to workout, plays a wide array of sports, all while maintaining a healthy diet. Therefore, it is not surprising that he recently attained the 'Gold' award in his NAPFA. Marsiling Secondary School has made no hesitation in recognising his visible enthusiasm for sports by awarding him the leadership position of 'Sports Council Vice Chairman'. Personally, I find that fitness is essential. I made it a point to keep fit. Bronze introduced the term 'sports exploring' to me. Basically, he finds great joy in going around participating in new and various types of sports, wherever and whenever he can. I'm more to trying out new sports. There is always a first time for everything. Bronze has expressed his interest in continuing to offer his services to the Corps after his secondary school life, demonstrating his deep and unwavering passion for the cause that he believes in To serve with Pride and Dedication. 18

Arms. Joining Interview 3SG Aloysious How PHOTOS 3SG Aloysious How For the Display Band Competition this year in April, TKBand invited a few of their NCC Land and Sea senior cadets to be part of their Singapore Youth Festival 2012 Display Band show. We interviewed MSG (NCC) Joven Lim (J), 2SG (NCC) Ryu Suzuki (S) and 2SG (NCC) Robbani (R) about their experience throughout this journey. Top: Keith Chan, Justin Tay, Robbani, Michael Pang Bottom: Ryu Suzuki, Muhammad Munif, Phua Keng Wee, Edric Ma, Ryan Hsu How do you find working with the Band? J: It s pretty fun and exciting and allowed me to experience what it s like to be part of this prestigious band. S: Even when we were all tired, they never fail to crack jokes that put smiles on our faces. R: They know when to play and when to be serious. The amount of focus they have during training is an inspiration to me. What difficulties did you face? J: It was tough for me to follow the rhythm of the music as I do not have any musical background. Not forgetting the hot sun that was present for every single training S: The trainings were completely different from what we do in NCC. Most practices are from morning till evening and is physically and mentally exhausting. R: As we were unfamiliar with how the band trains, we often get scolded for misbehaving. We were lost frequently, but the instructors were patient and guided us step by step. What else did you do other than PDS? J: I was the Vitruvian Man and was being rolled around in a giant wheel. S: I ve never expected myself to be spinning rifles outside of NCC I was elated when given the chance to do something that I enjoy very much. We helped in flipping boards too. R: I helped to push and roll the giant wheel that Joven was in We had to push the wheel and follow the formation that the band formed. How does it feel to be part of their show? J: It is a once in a lifetime opportunity to be part of a marching band in Singapore I ve gained greater insights to the performing arts scene in Singapore for Secondary Schools. S: It was definitely an honour to be part of this show titled Diamond Jubilee celebrating our school s 60 th anniversary. Performing in Singapore Indoor Stadium is very memorable R: It was an eye-opening experience I always wanted to be a Warrior after seeing my seniors helping out with the band s performance. Something I ll never forget 19

What is your favourite moment of the SYF journey? J: Definitely the process of putting up the show and also the friendship forged between me and many other schoolmates. Not to forget the sense of accomplishment, pride and happiness when we achieved the Certificate of Distinction. S: Indubitably, my favourite moment was the prize presentation. It was a memorable feeling when we achieved our target of distinction and all our effort did not go to waste. Showmanship is really important just like during our PDS competition. R: My favourite moment during the SYF journey was when we first stepped into the arena on the day of the competition. My heart began to race and I got really nervous. I felt the adrenaline rush throughout my entire body and I still remember every second of it. What is your takeaway from this collaboration with the band? J: Definitely the teamwork between my NCC land schoolmates and also the never say die spirit in me even as we performed badly during our practices. Lastly, I learnt that being disciplined is always important and also how I have to be flexible as there were many changes made to the show throughout the journey. S: I have learnt that teamwork is extremely important. I learnt that it is very important for us to discuss our schedule with one another or even make some sacrifices, so that all of us can practise together. Not having full attendance makes it hard for us to get things done and perfect our drills. R: I also learnt to accept other's differences and to work with a larger group of people. I also learnt to become a more resilient person as a whole and believe in our ability to succeed. No matter what setbacks we faced, we would overcome them. As the saying goes, when the going gets tough, TK gets tougher. MSG Joven Lim as Vitruvian Man TKBand has invited other CCAs such as the Choir, Drama Club, NCC Land and NCC Sea Secondary 4 students to help in the making of their SYF Display shows since This competition is held in the Singapore Indoor Stadium biannually with around 8 schools participating in it. They strongly believe in their school s team spirit and that the show will be spectacular if students from different CCAs were included in a show. It was definitely a good experience for those involved in this collaboration The things they learn from this experience will definitely be useful and guide them in everything they do. 20

Life as an Intern STORY C/LTA Zulkarneain PHOTOS 3SG Aloysious How As a Cadet Officer from the West District, I was given opportunities to lead, from cadets to cadet officer. NCC has given Cadet Officers the opportunity to plan and organise events, courses and even parades. These opportunities instill a sense of responsibility in Cadet Officers, knowing that the outcome NCC had nurtured us progressively. I chose to intern with NCC to further enhance my knowledge and be able to learn what happens behind the scenes. As an intern, I have been given so much more opportunities to lead. Interning in HQ has been an experiential and fruitful journey as I am able to passionately assist in nurturing leaders of tomorrow. However, it wasn t all smooth sailing, especially when there were a lot of tasks to be completed. I have learnt to prioritise. Apart from that, I am able to multi-task better. These are just a few examples of what I gained during my internship, but of course there is more to it. It has been a fruitful journey, I do not find it a chore coming to work, and has thoroughly enjoyed the journey 21
