1 2 nd Lieutenant Charles Buddy Frederick Feucht Legacy Scholarship History The scholarship was established in May 2006 by family and friends of 2 nd Lieutenant Charles Buddy Frederick Feucht, and the first recipient was a graduating senior from the Reynoldsburg High School Class of nd Lt. Feucht was the oldest son of Frederick Albert and Freda Alwilmuth (Lane) Feucht and the brother of Dora (Feucht) Donavan, Mary Alice (Feucht) Foster, Richard Feucht, Lura Fern (Feucht) Lord. 2 nd Lt. Charles Frederick Feucht grew up in Reynoldsburg, Ohio. Affectionately known as Buddy, he loved the outdoors and his family s dairy farm, located on Livingston Avenue. Growing up, he was active in Boy Scouts, 4-H, and Juvenile Grange. In addition to helping on the farm, he worked as a newspaper carrier. Buddy was a 1936 graduate of Reynoldsburg High School. He attended The Ohio State University and majored in Dairy Technology. In October 1939, Buddy enlisted in the Ohio National Guard and was assigned to the 37 th Division. Upon our country s entrance to World War II, he transferred to the U.S. Army Air Corp, was commissioned a 2 nd Lieutenant, and received his bombardier wings March 1943 at Big Springs, Texas. 2 nd Lt. Feucht, completed training at Langley Field, Virginia in September 1943 and was ordered to New Guinea on October 1, He was assigned to the 5 th Air Force, the 43 rd Bomb Group, known as Ken s Men, 63 rd Squadron, nicknamed The Sea Hawks. On the evening of November 4, 1943, his crew was ordered to fly their B-24 Liberator and to shadow a 10 ship convoy near Kaveing, located in the South Pacific. The nine member crew did not return and was reported missing November 5, Early 2002, a hunter, Robert Simau, from Yalument Village, New Guinea, discovered the wreckage of a plane, serial number , laying 10,000 feet in elevation in the dense Sarawaget Range, Morobe Province, New Guinea. Mr. Simau turned over the remains he had discovered to the U.S. Army Central Identification Laboratory, Hawaii (CILHI), and now known as Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command (JPAC). In 2003, CILHI excavated the crash site and recovered remains of the crew. On February 10, 2006, official identification of all nine crew members was announced. 2 nd Lt. Feucht was buried in Glen Rest Cemetery on May 13, The Feucht family recognized the value of a college education. As a child of the Great Depression, Buddy sold strawberries and butter beans to help finance his education at The Ohio State University. To honor his memory and service to his country, the Feucht family is proud to provide a scholarship that will help a graduate of Reynoldsburg High School to further his or her education. 1

2 Criteria The recipient is to be selected according to the following criteria: 1) The recipient is a graduating senior from Reynoldsburg High School. 2) Applicants must be planning to enter their first year of college by September ) The recipient will be chosen by the family of 2 nd Lieutenant Charles Buddy Frederick Feucht. 4) The recipient will be chosen from applications submitted by eligible students based on the following criteria: a) Academic performance/academic potential b) Involvement at Reynoldsburg High School c) Community and volunteer service and/or employment d) Essay e) Letters of Recommendation No one criterion is more important than another. All aspects of a student s application are carefully weighed. Terms of Scholarship One $ scholarship will be awarded. The scholarship is for tuition at an accredited two year or four year college or university. A check will be mailed directly to the student s academic institution in August Deadline Applications are due Monday, March 13, 2017, by the end of the school day. Applications are to be returned to the Guidance Office, Reynoldsburg High School. 2
