4 MISSION STATEMENT We are an all-through, inclusive Catholic girls school with boys in the Nursery, committed to preparing girls for life-long effectiveness and success. As part of their journey girls will learn of intellectual risk taking and emotional strength, reflection and self-knowledge, persuasiveness and team building as well as a cultural curiosity for an enriched enjoyment of life. In our stunning 13 acres of grounds, girls have a physical freedom unique in central London. We aim to instill in them the emotional freedom to grow intellectually and spiritually and to understand the truth about themselves, others and our complex world. To this end we seek, develop and retain the best teachers who value wellbeing and the individual progress of each girl as much as they are relentless in their pursuit of academic excellence. Their goal is life-long success for each girl and they set the pace of energy and dynamism within which the girls flourish. 4
5 New Scholarships for September 2019 A love of learning The Mary Tredway Award - 100% scholarships for Sixth Formers At St Augustine s we rejoice in instilling a love of learning for its own sake. It happens that girls also perform out of their skin in public examinations our girls are clever and they relish the quality of learning and teaching we offer. We are always looking for new ways to communicate this central school value and this year we are delighted to announce the introduction of new scholarships for September The first is The Mary Tredway Award, a 100% scholarship for the Sixth Form. Mary Tredway founded our school in France in This was a time of recusancy which means that Catholics were not allowed to practise their religion in England. Like many Catholic schools, we began our journey in Europe seeking religious freedom. French laicisation laws at the beginning of the Twentieth Century meant that the nuns decided to move back to England where they built another convent and school here in Ealing. These women of steel did this during the First World War a time of enormous upheaval and challenge. One nun was also a suffragette who was chained to railings and arrested for window-breaking more than once to help secure the vote for women. In other words, as a school we find our foundations in the strength of visionary women who combined a scholarly love of learning with a vision for all that women could and should do. In 2018 we commemorate the ending of the First World War, the backdrop to our history and to the social changes which this heralded. Our new 100% scholarships for Sixth Form entry honour our traditions as well as our commitment to the future. We want as many girls as possible to benefit from our work we are an inclusive community and have always welcomed girls from every faith tradition. The world needs St Augustine s girls because they are assured and academically alive. This scholarship is an exciting proposition for a girl who wants to learn and to be part of our journey into the future. Effective preparation for a courageous future The second new scholarship also has an important historical link to the school and another school value which is courage. Le Chemin de Sainte Marie de Neuilly is a new Modern Languages Scholarship. Our school is rich with stories of linguistic scholarship and adventure. Russian has long been part of the curriculum as far back as when the school was in Paris. Our sister school in Paris, St Marie de Neuilly, has continued this tradition and boasts the story of a nun who frequently travelled to Russia, going behind the Iron Curtain and bringing out Solzhenitsyn s Gulag Archipelago for publication at considerable risk to herself. This scholarship recognises our French and European roots and celebrates continued outstanding success in Modern Languages GCSE and A Level qualifications, in particular our 100% A* in French GCSE this summer. Le Chemin means path in French and we are offering the scholarship at two points 14+ and 16+, recognising moments when girls (regardless of when they join the school) embark on a path of public examinations in modern languages. This innovative award includes financial support into university if a language is pursued at that level. 5

27 3. Expectations of Award Holders A love of learning is something which St Augustine s Priory values profoundly. Award holders are expected to reflect this in the way they perform as role models throughout their school life. This is measured not only in examination results but also in their participation in all aspects of school life and commitment to school values. Awards will be reviewed annually and girls will be required to reflect on their learning and their contribution to the life of St Augustine s Priory in its entirety. Able, Gifted and Talented Able, Gifted and Talented The Co-ordinator of Able, Gifted and Talented will work closely withthe Deputy Head, Juniors and Senior Form Tutors to oversee the support and development of Academic scholars. In lessons differentiation is embedded into schemes of work and opportunities for extension are many. However, work beyond the classroom contributes significantly to the overall educational experience of students. Scholars are expected to join some of the schemes offered by the school and the Able, Gifted and Talented Co-ordinator will advise girls on which programmes are most suitable. Holders of the Art Award are expected to assist the Art Department with shows and whole-school projects. Holders of the Drama Award are expected to participate in the preparation of performances throughout the school as well as assisting the Drama Department s work throughout the year. Holders of Music Awards will be expected to regularly attend rehearsals for, and participate in, musical events. Holders of the Modern Languages Award are expected to participate fully in the Bilingual Hub at the school. Holders of Sports Awards are expected to regularly attend practices and participate in sports events with commitment as team members and as role models. Pupil and Parent Commitment Awards are subject to yearly review. A pupil who is the subject of an Award is required to work hard, to contribute positively to the school, to show enthusiasm and engagement, to be a credit to the school and to set a good example to other pupils. Parents are expected to support and encourage their daughter to achieve the purposes of the Award and to uphold the School values. Withdrawal of the Award The Award may be withdrawn by written notice sent to a parent if, in the opinion of the school, the pupil or a parent has not complied with the obligations laid out above or if the pupils has fallen below the required standards of conduct and progress following consultation and written warnings. Withdrawal of the Award shall take effect from the start of the following term. For the avoidance of doubt, the benefits payable under an Award do not apply to any term for which the school has required payment of fees in lieu of notice.
