3 HEALTH DIVISION, RIO GRANDE CAMPUS DR. PAULA MITCHELL, DEAN MISSION It is the mission of the Health Career & Technical Education, Math & Sciences Division to provide educational opportunities that prepare individuals to improve their personal quality of life and to contribute to their economically and culturally diverse community. VISION The Health Career & Technical Education, Math & Science Division is the primary source of technologically advanced health professional education for a growing and culturally diverse border population, a local resource for community health care services, and a contributor to medical/science research as appropriate for a community college. PHILOSOPHY The Health Career & Technical Education, Math & Science Division meets the community s need by providing opportunities for individuals to become qualified members of a health care profession or to pursue a career related to math or science. The Division provides quality education utilizing state of the art instructional methodologies, equipment, and lifelong learning. The Division of Health Career & Technical Education, Math & Science offers a variety of state and nationally accredited programs. Library services at the Rio Grande campus are an integral part of the services provided to the community and our students. GOALS Provide a standard of excellence in the education of students seeking careers related to health care, math, or science. Provide the community with qualified members of a health care profession. Provide educational and professional health care services to the community. Provide effective, innovative and alternative instructional methodologies in the implementation of quality education in the Health Career & Technical Education, Math & Science Programs. Develop and coordinate an effective system for the recruitment of students into Health Career & Technical Education, Math & Science courses/programs. Improve student retention, program completion and student skill development in the Health Career & Technical Education, Math & Science courses/programs. Provide an on-going systematic faculty and staff development plan which promotes the goals of the Division of Health Career & Technical Education, Math & Science. 5 DENTAL ASSISTING MARIA DE LOURDES GARDUNO, PROGRAM COORDINATOR MISSION The mission of the Dental Assisting Program is to improve dental health care by providing the community with qualified, nationally certified and state registered, entry-level dental assisting professionals. In the fulfillment of this mission, the Dental Assisting Program continually assesses the requirements of the community and initiates curricula updates and continuing education opportunities in order to meet the changing needs of the dental professional. VISION The El Paso Community College Dental Assisting Program is committed to advancing the dental profession by being the model source of dental assisting education in the region. PHILOSOPHY The philosophy of the Dental Assisting Program is consistent with that of the Health Career & Technical Education, Math & Science Division and the El Paso Community College. The program meets accreditation standards and community needs by providing opportunities for individuals to become qualified and credentialed dental assisting professionals. In adherence to this philosophy, the Dental Assisting Program improves the quality of dental health care within the community and contributes to its general economic state. GOALS To provide a standard of excellence in didactic and clinical education of students seeking a career in dental assisting. To provide quality dental health education and services to the community. 6 STUDENT LEARNING OBJECTIVES Upon successful completion of the Dental Assisting Program the student will be able to: Demonstrate entry-level competency, in chair side dental assisting skills, while adhering to the principles of sterilization, infection control, and physical safety in accordance with industry standards and government regulations. Handle and manipulate dental materials and perform dental laboratory procedures in a manner that ensures personal, patient, and environmental safety. Produce dental radiographs of diagnostic quality. Deliver oral hygiene instructions, and demonstrate proper personal oral care and preventive techniques. Communicate effectively and in a manner consistent with the professional ethics and code of conduct of the dental assisting profession. Follow HIPAA protocols when processing and communicating patient information. Demonstrate sufficient knowledge of dental assisting in order to achieve passing examination scores on the national certification exam and the state registration exam. 4 P age

7 DENTAL HYGIENE ELIA M. MENDEZ, PROGRAM COORDINATOR MISSION The mission of the Dental Hygiene Program is to prepare entry-level dental hygienist who will provide safe dental hygiene services. To keep current with constant changes in the health care delivery system, graduates must possess the skills and values necessary for lifelong learning and professional growth. VISION The El Paso Community College Dental Hygiene Program will be a premier dental hygiene program recognized for advancing the dental hygiene profession and meeting the community s needs by providing highly trained licensed dental hygienists. PHILOSOPHY The philosophy of the Dental Hygiene Program is consistent with that of the Health Career & Technical Education, Math & Science Division and the El Paso Community College. The Program meets community needs by providing opportunities for individuals to become qualified Dental Hygienists. Contingent on this, the Dental Hygiene Program improves dental health care of the community and its overall economic state by providing employable, qualified dental hygienists. GOALS In fulfilling its mission, the dental hygiene education program achieves its goals by assuring that: Goal 1: Graduates will be competent dental hygienists who possess the skills necessary for entry level dental hygiene practice. a. Graduates pass the dental hygiene national board and regional examinations. b. Graduates implement an appropriate treatment plan based on the dental hygiene diagnosis as established with the dentist c. Graduates understand the role of the dental hygienist and work in a manner consistent with their state practice act and ADHA s Code of Ethics. 9 DIAGNOSTIC MEDICAL SONOGRAPHY NORA BALDERAS, PROGRAM COORDINATOR MISSION The mission of the Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program (DMSO) is to improve health care by providing the community with qualified entry level critical thinking professional Sonographers. The program will continue to assess the community s health care needs, initiate program curriculum updates, provide training experiences, and educate the community on the inner workings of the vast field of Medical Sonography. VISION The EPCC DMSO program is committed to perfecting the education and clinical skills required for graduates to become proficient and registered imagers in the field of Diagnostic Medical Sonography. We are dedicated to community service and instill high standards of patient care, quality imaging and professionalism to meet the challenges of their future careers. PHILOSOPHY The philosophy of the Diagnostic Medical Sonography is consistent with that of the Health Career & Technical Education Math & Science and El Paso Community College. The program meets accreditation standards and community needs by providing opportunities for individuals to become qualified Sonographers. GOALS To prepare competent entry-level Diagnostic Medical Sonographers in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (behavior) learning domains. Provide standard of excellence in didactic and clinical education of students seeking a career in Diagnostic Ultrasound. Provide educational and community services to the community in the field of Diagnostic Ultrasound and health. Provide effective, innovative and alternative instructional methodologies in the implementation of quality educational programs in Diagnostic Ultrasound. Develop and coordinate an effective system for the recruitment of students into the Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program. Provide guidance and effective administrative, management and support services for the Diagnostic Ultrasound discipline, students, and faculty. Maintain a laboratory clinical setting that meets federal, state, community and accreditation safety and infection control standards. Provide the student with the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities to pass the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonography and American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (Sonography exams). Deliver a quality level of instruction enabling the program to maintain full accreditation status. Retain a minimum of 80% of the Program students for course completion, program completion and graduation. Coordinate with other college departments for the recruitment of students into the Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program. Maintain a 75% employment rate of graduates within six months. Maintain at least a 75% satisfactory response level of employers returning surveys as indicative of program quality. STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES The student will: Produce quality images to evaluate normal anatomy, obtain measurements and identify pathology to create technical impression that correlates to the patient history with the appropriate exam. Utilize oral and written communication skills to clarify doctor s orders, instruct patients regarding proper preparation of exams and explain procedures, utilize medical terminology, maintain inter-department communication and summarize technical data to the doctor. Perform, document, evaluate and critique abdominal, obstetric, gynecologic, superficial, neurosonologic and invasive ultrasound exams. Employ proper technique in the function of the ultrasound equipment, select appropriate transducer for selective exams, perform safe handling of transducers, demonstrate accurate 8 P age

11 transportation of portable equipment and assure appropriate maintenance and cleanliness of equipment. Ensure patient safety by: Identifying patient s allergies, verifying safety of equipment, maintaining a clean environment and demonstrating universal precautions. Customize work environment to maintain good posture for scanning, maintain proper lighting and wear personal protective equipment (PPE); (ERGONOMICS). Obtain and maintain registrations. 12 EMERGENCY MEDICAL SERVICES (EMS) TONY AYUB, PROGRAM COORDINATOR MISSION Based on this philosophy, the Discipline improves the overall health care within the community by providing vital links in the chain of the Health Care Team, the EMT-Basic, EMT-Intermediate, and EMT-Paramedic. Through its instructional methodologies and continuing education, the Discipline provides the opportunity for individuals to acquire and maintain certification at both the state and national levels of registry. It is the mission of the Discipline is to continue to provide the community with qualified EMT's. PHILOSOPHY The Emergency Medical Services philosophy is consistent with that of the Health Career and Technical Education, Math & Science Division. The Discipline meets the community's needs by providing opportunities for individuals to become qualified professional Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT's). GOALS Provide a standard of excellence in the education of students seeking a career in Pre-hospital and hospital emergency medicine. Provide effective, innovative, and alternative instructional methodologies in the implementation of a quality educational program in the EMT and Paramedicine, to include the entry level domains, tasks, and sub-tasks for Certified EMT, Advanced EMT and Paramedics, in addition to Licensed Paramedics. Provide the students with the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully complete the National Registry of EMTs registry exam at the appropriate level. Deliver a quality level of instruction enabling the Emergency Medical Services Paramedic Degree program to maintain full accreditation status. Maintain a minimum pass rate of 75% on the National Registry of EMT s exam. To provide quality education that is necessary for a student to become qualified to practice in the field of Emergency Medicine. To employ updated equipment and software that correspond to standard of excellence in didactic and laboratory courses. To provide effective, innovative, simulations, and alternative instructional methodologies in order to maintain a quality and contemporary education program. 10 P age

14 HEALTH INFORMATION MANAGEMENT JEAN GARRISON, PROGRAM COORDINATOR MISSION Based upon this philosophy, the Health Information Management Program improves health care by providing the community with qualified health information practitioners. The Health Information Management Program will continuously assess the need for, and will initiate and improve updated program curricula and clinical practice experiences to help meet the changing requirements of the individual and the health information management community. PHILOSOPHY The philosophy of the Health Information Management Program is consistent with that of the Health Career & Technical Education, Math & Science Division and EI Paso Community College. The program meets accreditation standards and community needs by providing opportunities for individuals to become qualified health information practitioners. GOALS Provide a standard of excellence in the education of students seeking a career in Health Information Management. Provide effective, innovative, and alternative instructional methodologies in the implementation of a quality educational program in the Health Information Management Program, to include the entry level domains, tasks, and sub-tasks for Registered Health Information Technicians (RHIT s). Provide the students with the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities to be successful on Registered Health Information Technician Exam offered by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA). Deliver a quality level of instruction enabling the program to maintain full accreditation status. Provide opportunities to enhance student retention. Retain a minimum of 75% of the program students for course completion, program completion and graduation. Maintain a minimum pass rate of 75% on the Registered Health Information Technician exam. The Program meets accreditation standards and community needs by providing opportunities for individuals to become Credentialed Medical Assistant. The Medical Assisting Program will continuously assess the need for and will initiate and provide updated program curriculum, experiences and community education to help meet the changing requirements of the individual and the medical community. GOALS Provide a standard of excellence in didactic and clinical education of students seeking a career in medical assisting. Provide educational and community services to the community in the field of medical assisting. 17 MEDICAL IMAGING TECHNOLOGY-RADIOGRAPHY CHRISTL THOMPSON, PROGRAM COORDINATOR MISSION The mission of the Medical Imaging Technology- Radiography Program is to improve health care by providing the community qualified radiographers, continuously assessing the community need for Radiologic Technology, updating program curricula, and providing experiences to help meet the changing requirements of the individual and the radiographer community. VISION STATEMENT The Medical Imaging Technology- Radiography Program at El Paso Community College is committed to advancing the profession of radiologic technology and meeting the community s need by providing educated, certified and registered radiologic technologists. PHILOSOPHY The philosophy of the Medical Imaging Technology- Radiography Program is consistent with that of the Health Career & Technical Education, Math & Science Division and El Paso Community College. The program meets accreditation standards and community needs by providing opportunities for individuals to become qualified radiographers. GOALS Prepare students to be employed in radiology-related jobs. Prepare students to pass the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination. Prepare competent workers to meet the needs of employers. Ensure the Medical Imaging Technology- Radiography Program meets quality standards. 19 MEDICAL LABORATORY TECHNOLOGY VERONICA DOMINGUEZ, PROGRAM COORDINATOR MISSION The mission of the Medical Laboratory Technology Program is to provide the community with qualified entry-level clinical laboratorians by providing educational opportunities and clinical laboratory experiences that will lead to national certification; accurate and precise laboratory testing; and ethical work practices. To achieve its mission, the Medical Laboratory Technology Program will: Provide the educational and clinical opportunity for individuals dedicated to the health care community to acquire the knowledge, skills and abilities to become professional laboratorians. Provide professional and nationally certified professional laboratorians to encourage, train, and mentor individuals who genuinely care and want to serve their community in their own special way. Ensure our medical laboratory technicians can perform precise and accurate analytical testing procedures by equipping student laboratory facility with appropriate clinical analyzers, medical lab testing reagents and advanced computer software upon which they can practice and gain confidence in operating, troubleshooting, and maintaining technological instrumentation. Continue to solicit, establish and/or maintain excellent professional relationships with clinical training facilities so student can have the opportunity to train alongside laboratory professionals in a clinical setting and in real-time. Encourage MLT program graduates to sit for the National Certification Examination to become nationally certified professional laboratorians. To increase enrollment, retention, and completion rates by providing a technologically enhanced teaching and learning lab facility, and a dedicated professionally certified faculty which will inspire lifelong career-oriented learning so individuals will serve their diverse health care community with honestly, integrity, and professionalism. PHILOSOPHY The Medical Laboratory Technology Program meets the community s health care needs by providing the opportunity for qualified individuals to become skilled professional laboratorians. The MLT program does so, by providing a quality educational program that reflects continuing assessment, 17 P age

20 evaluation, and when appropriate, program revision while maintaining a program that is nationally accredited. GOALS To provide a quality educational program that will help ease the lab work force shortage by providing entry level laboratory professionals with the clinical knowledge, skills and abilities to serve the medical community with honesty, integrity, and professionalism. To recruit individuals dedicated to serving the health care community and introduce them to an educational program of the highest quality and then provide them with the educational support necessary to promote their success as clinical laboratorians resulting in increased enrollment, retention, and program completion. To provide a comprehensive educational program by acquiring the necessary clinical analyzers and advanced computer software programs resulting in the success of a student both academically and professionally. To focus on the strategic value of these future lab professionals by focusing on the challenge of adequately training them to serve the medical community with not only clinical skills and abilities but also with technological knowhow. To continue to work toward maintaining national accreditation for the Medical Laboratory Technology Program from the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS). To encourage and motivate 100% of the MLT students graduating each year, to take the national certification examination to become credentialed laboratory professionals. To become familiar with area and state job recruiters having laboratory job opportunities thus helping our graduates further demonstrate the type of quality educational program from where they received their clinical training. Continuously encourage program graduates lifelong learning and career progression. STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES Demonstrate good communication skills with laboratory staff, healthcare personnel, and patients. Demonstrate HIPAA protocols when communicating via telephone, facsimile, , and/or interpersonally. Demonstrate compliance with government, state, and organizational safety regulations involving biological, chemical, fire, electrical, physical, and radiation hazards. 21 Perform quality phlebotomy techniques, both venipuncture and dermal puncture, on infants, children, adolescents, adults, and elderly patients incorporating the appropriate blood collection system, evacuated tube/microtainers, order of draw and skin preparation requirements. Avoid pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical errors when collecting, transporting, processing, using rejection/acceptance criteria, and aliquoting patient samples. Participate in Quality Assurance, Quality Control, and Proficiency Testing protocols incorporating precision, accuracy, Levey Jennings Charts, and Westgard Rules to determine acceptability of test results. NADER RASSAEI, PROGRAM COORDINATOR MISSION It is the mission of the Pharmacy Technology Program to provide quality education and fulfilling career opportunities in pharmacy Technology; by offering academic courses, laboratory experiences and professional Clinical skills that will lead to national certification, employability and ethical work practice. VISION STATEMENT Pharmacy Technology Program is committed to provide the community with qualified, educated, trained, certified, registered and employable Pharmacy Technicians. We are aware that world of pharmacy is ever changing and the need for qualified Pharmacy Technicians is essential, therefore, this discipline will continually evaluate its effectiveness to the individual student and the community as a whole. Pharmacy Technology program is also dedicated to enhance educational, personal, and economic growth of graduates by providing quality education and training to assist them in gaining an understanding of the world and in defining their personal goals in that world. PHILOSOPHY The Pharmacy Technology Program meets community s needs by providing opportunities for individuals to obtain a degree in Pharmacy Technology and become nationally certified. Based on this philosophy, the Pharmacy Technology Discipline improves health care through effective instructional methodologies, equipment, and continuing education. We offer an ASHP PTAC accredited program. The Pharmacy Technology Program is dedicated to provide students with didactic course as well as clinical opportunities for success. The program will prepare students through activities and trainings that will enrich their lives and contribute to the student's sense of well-being. The Pharmacy Technology Program recognizes that students are individuals and come from a variety of backgrounds. We accept the challenges to individualize the education offered so all students are able to benefit from the experience. 20 P age

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES Upon satisfactory completion of this program: A student will demonstrate effective oral, written, and nonverbal communication techniques to provide efficient customer service as a member of the pharmacy team. A student will demonstrate data entering skills that include precise pharmaceutical calculations to identify correct dosages, translating and processing prescriptions and medication orders, maintaining inventory control, adjudicating different third party insurance claims, and collecting payments and/or initiating billing. A student will demonstrate proper sterile and non-sterile techniques to prepare medications in accordance with health care standards. Provide effective, innovative and alternative instructional methodologies in the implementation of a quality educational program. Coordinate an effective system for the recruitment of students into the Respiratory Care Technology Program. Continue with student retention, program completion and student skill development. Utilize competency-based education development. Promote effective administrative, management, and support services for the Respiratory Care Technology Program, students, and faculty. 28 Establish competency guidelines for clinical faculty in the use of new equipment, medications and procedures, especially in a hospital s critical car areas. STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES Student will perform cardiopulmonary patient assessments and evaluations using cardiopulmonary pathophysiology, signs and symptoms. Student will collect and evaluate diagnostic clinical information and the medical history to develop the respiratory patient care plan. Student will demonstrate emergency care and the correct use of life support equipment. Student will demonstrate professional American Association for Respiratory Care (AARC) standards and ethical behavior. Student will be able to demonstrate their minimum level of competency by successfully challenging the national certification exam. NOTE: This national exam is an evaluation of the student s knowledge and application of the competencies taught in the various program specific courses. Each item is categorized and analyzed by the testing agency indicating strengths and weaknesses. This analysis is provided to the student as well as the Program Coordinator. The feedback is used to make revisions in the course content, as necessary, based on evaluation results of the student cohort. Results are also used to provide individual tutoring for reinforcement of weak areas. Student will pass the program s Clinical Final Exam, a practical and comprehensive measure of clinical skills, necessary to compete in the workforce. NOTE: This is the capstone exam for passing the final clinical course for completion of the program. This Clinical Final Exam specifically lists the critical steps for performance of various critical care procedures and involves direct observation by the clinical instructor. 26 P age

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES Demonstrate a clear understanding of the basic biological concepts and theories and be able to make connections among them. Assessment: Develop classroom assessment techniques such as Concept Maps, Categorizing grid, Minute Paper. Develop rubrics to assess the percentage of students performing at each level in our courses. Keep records for the courses we teach. Relate specific biological concepts to the various areas of the biological and related sciences and their applications to everyday life events. Assessment: Students will be expected to look for applications/current events related to the topics discussed in class in the news, Internet or daily life events and present to the class or do as short homework assignments. We will keep records of the assignments for the courses we teach. Apply the scientific process including designing and conducting experiments, testing hypothesis, analyzing and presenting data, and drawing conclusions. Assessment: students will be expected to participate in investigative laboratory exercises where they ask a question, develop a hypothesis, design and conduct an experiment, collect and analyze the data, and present it to the class. These exercises will expose them to the investigative and interdisciplinary nature of science and will enhance their communication and quantitative skills. Application, award and management of all health grants and external contracts. PHILOSOPHY The Office of Health Grants and Research has made many strides in building health capacity and creating an environment of health research to include education, health promotion, recruitment of health students/professions and professionals, marketing of health careers, health literacy, and health services partnerships. VISION The vision of the Office of Health Grants and Research is to identify, plan, write and execute the health research and/or grant project while adhering to College s policies and funding agencies guidelines and regulations. GOALS Using the Division s Mission Statement as its basis, the Office of Health Grants and Research has to meet these following goals: Development and execution of a minimum of 20 applications of health grants and research projects.
