1 2013 Pebbles in Practice Workshop Speakers The New An Insider s View of Creating a High Performance Hospital Tuesday, Septemb ber 24 Michael H. Covert, FACHE President & CEO Michael Covert came to as President and Chief Executive Officer in 2003, bringing with him a reputation for exceptional leadership, and more than 36 years of experience in healthcare administration the last 25 of them in the capacity of CEO. He received his initial training in the field as an Administrative Resident with Hillcrest Medical Center in Oklahoma, following the completion of his graduate studies in Health Administration. Mr. Covert's previous positions include President and CEO off Sarasota Memorial Health Care System from 1992 to 2000; acting Director of the Public Health Department, Wichita, Kansas; Executive Director of the Ohio State University of Hospitals, Columbus, Ohio; Chief Operating Officer at St. Francis Regional Medical Center, Wichita, Kansas; and Senior Vice President of Physicians Corporation of America, Wichita, Kansas. Most recently, Covert served as President and Chief Executive Officer of the Washington Hospital Center in Washington, D..C., one of the ten busiest hospitals in the United States and the largest in the DC/Maryland. Mr. Covert has also remained active in healthcare outside off his regular roles. Currently, he is Chair of the Hospital Association of San Diego and Imperial Counties, a member of the Board and Executive Committees of the California Hospital Association and VHA Western Region, and a member of the American Hospital Association Health Systems Council Board. Mr. Covert received a bachelor's degree in business administration and a master's degree in health administration from Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri and is a Fellow in the American College of Health Care Executives.

2 Lorie Shoemaker, RN, MSN, D. H.A., NEA BC Chief Nurse Executive Lorie Shoemaker, Chief Nurse Executive for, oversees the nursing divisions for Palomar Medical Center in Escondido, California, a 288 bed hospital; Pomerado Hospital in Poway, California, a 107 bed hospital; a distinct part skilled nursing and Palomar Home Health. Under Lorie s leadership, these entities received Magnet recognition in 2009, making the first public health system in California to achieve this recognition. In her 23 years with, Lorie has fulfilled progressive management positions and has served as Chief Nurse Executive since Lorie also serves as adjunct clinical professor and lecturer for San Diego State University s School of Nursing; as clinical associate faculty for California State University San Marcos (CSUSM) School of Nursing; and as a CSUSM Advisory Board member regardingg nursing and public health program development. She also serves as the Co Chair of the VHA West Coast CNO Council and as a member of Elizabethh Hospice Board s Mission Effectiveness Committee in Escondido, CA. She is an active member of the Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing and the American Organization of Nurse Executives ( AONE), having contributed from the perspective of the Chief Nursing Officer to the AONE Guiding Principles for Building the Hospital for the Next Generation. Lorie s work in the area off hospital design led to her appointment with the California Hospital Association s Joint Committee on Accreditation and Licensing with an emphasis on changingg California regulations to support the widespread adoption and utilization of evidence based design concepts in healthcare. Lorie has achieved a Doctorate in Health Administration from the Medical University of South Carolina and a Master of Science in Nursing from the University of Phoenix. Lorie is an alumnus of the 2004 Johnson & Johnson/Wharton Fellows Program in Management for Nurse Executives and in 2005 obtained certification in Advanced Nursing Administration (NEA BC)) from the American Nurses Credentialing Center. Lorie was a finalist in the 2006 Nursingg Spectrum Excellence awards category of Advancing and Leading the Profession and was recognized by the Association of California Nurse Leaders (ACNL) for Excellencee in Nursing Leadership in Frances Moore, AIA, LEED AP BD+C Associate Principal CO Architects With a career spanning 20 years, Frances Moore is a leader within her firm and profession. Experienced in advanced healthcare, research and academic facilities, Frances is recognized for her knowledge of sustainable design through her pioneering work with the 740,000 sq. ft, futuristic Palomar Medical Center hospital in Southern California completed in Frances oversaw the development of its innovative sustainable planning and design initiatives, as well as the implementation of all Center for Health Design evidence basedd recommendations for healthcare facilities. Frances is currently the senior

3 project architect for the new, 560,000 sq. ft. Kaiser Permanente San Diego Central Hospital Medical Center that is seeking LEED HC Gold. Frances is an Associate Principal with CO Architects in Los Angeles and holds a Master of Architecture from the University of California, Berkeley, and a Bachelor of Arts from Wesleyan University. Brian Gracz Project Executive DPR Construction As project executive, Brian Gracz has managed over twenty highly successful projects for DPR Construction, one of the nation s leading construction companies with more than $2 billion in annual revenue. From contract negotiations through preconstruction and procurement and ultimately project closeout, Gracz provides leadership during all phases of major projects. He is a LEED 2.0 accredited professional with expertise in planning, schedule development and budget control in a variety of industries, including life science, advanced technology and corporate campus projects. From 2008 to 2012, Gracz served a critical role in the successful construction of Palomar Medical Center, a $642 million ground up hospital located in San Diego. During that project, he provided expertise in cost estimating, preconstruction, Integrated Project Delivery, and high level management operations. Brian Gracz is a graduate of Purdue University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Construction Engineering and Management. Yu Ju Liu, RLA, LEED AP Associate Principal Spurlock Poirier Landscape Architects For over 15 years, Liu preferring the simplicity of her family name has practiced with a strong focus on urban and regional planning as well as landscape architecture. Her urban design work on Denver s The Commons Neighborhood, a 60 acre mixed use development adjacent to downtown s Union Station, built community consensus around issues of density, transit and urban and neighborhood character. The project also won an award from Congress for the New Urbanism in the process. Using her strong organizational and people skills, Liu, an Associate Principal with Spurlock Poirier Landscape Architects, manages most of the studios largest projects, both in scope and complexity. One such project was Palomar Medical Center in Escondido, CA which features a network of healing gardens at grade and throughout the hi rise structure, combined with the largest vegetated roof in Southern California. Along the western waterfront of downtown San Diego, Liu has been guiding the design and construction over the past six years for the North Embarcadero Vision Plan Phase 1

4 Implementation which transforms parking lots and degraded seawalls into a major new civic esplanade along San Diego Bay. Her innovative efforts in the role of storm water management and living roofs in the coastal desert region of southern California landed her as a key speaker at the 2009 International Green Roof Conference. She leads the studio s Sustainability Research efforts, turning the research into high performing built landscapes that are acclaimed for beauty and elegance in both place making and technical innovation. Her projects have earned LEED Platinum certification and multiple design awards. Prior to joining Spurlock Poirier, Liu s portfolio included work as project director and landscape architect for the Baldwin Hills Scenic Overlook in Los Angeles for the California State Parks system, and project landscape architect for two new high schools: Cathedral High School in the San Diego, suburb of Carmel Valley and Mater Dei High School in nearby Chula Vista. Each offered design and landscape challenges on their approximately 50 acre sites. At Pitzer College in Claremont, she was project manager for a 300 unit student housing building that achieved a LEED Gold rating. Prudence August Information Technology Director Prudence August has been a member of the IT Leadership team since 2006 where she is the current the Director of Information Technology. During her tenure at, she has served as Interim CIO and spent five years as the Director of Applications. In 2011, she and her team were responsible for creating an Electronic Health Record (EHR) foundation for the entire district. Under her guidance, electronic charting capabilities were expanded and the system was successfully implemented for the opening of the new Palomar Medical Center. This new state of the art system, along others such as the first wireless monitoring device that measures patient vital signs, were implemented to support the evidence based design that was incorporated into the hospital of the future. Prudence has been an active member in numerous Health Industry Councils, including Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS), College of Healthcare Information Management Executives (CHIME) and is a graduate of the UCSD Healthcare Executive Leadership Program. Jonathan Huls, MBA, CHFM, LEED AP Facilities Manager Jonathan Huls joined the team in 2004 where he now works as the Facilities Manager at Palomar Medical Center. During his tenure with, Huls has served in many important capacities. In 2007, Huls played a key role in the evacuation of over 300

5 patients and employees at Pomerado Hospital during the San Diego wildfires. Then in 2012, Huls built and led the facilities program to open and maintain the new 288 bed Palomar Medical Center in Escondido, CA. Huls is a Certified Healthcare Facilities Manager, holds a certification as a LEED accredited professional and is a current member of ASHE and CSHE where he serves as the San Diego Chapter President. After serving in the U.S. Navy as a Nuclear Machinist Mate aboard USS Portsmouth for six years, Huls received his Bachelor s Degree from Thomas Edison State College and MBA at the University of Colorado with an emphasis in healthcare administration. Barbara Hamilton, LEED AP Sustainability Manager Barbara Hamilton, a LEED Green Associate, is the System Sustainability Manager at. She oversees a comprehensive sustainability program for the health system, including energy and water efficiency, waste reduction and recycling, healthy food, environmentally preferred purchasing, alternative transportation, gardens and sites and engagement. Barbara also serves as Chair for the Novation Environmental Advisory Group and is an active participant with the San Diego Nutrition in Healthcare Leadership Team, Practice Greenhealth, Health Care Without Harm, and the Healthier Hospitals Initiative. Barbara has received numerous awards for excellence in sustainability leadership and management; and under her guidance has now received six Environmental Excellence Awards from Practice Greenhealth.
