3 Project Overview Background London s sewerage system was developed during the19th century and a single set of sewers convey both foul sewage and rainwater run-off. During heavy rain events, excess flows discharge directly to the Thames. Lee Tunnel will allow 50% of the total volume discharged to the Thames to be intercepted and treated Key Parties Client: Thames Water Principal Contractor: MVB Supervisor / Client Support: Project Management Team CDM Co-ordinator: Peter Neale The Lee Tunnel Project is being constructed by MVB JV on behalf of Thames Water and is part of the Thames Tideway improvements MVB is a joint venture between Morgan Sindall, VINCI Construction Grands Projets and Bachy Soletanche

5 Project Overview Works consist of: 4 deep shafts between 20m and 38m diameter and up to 80m deep using diaphragm wall construction 6,900m tunnel, 7.2m finished diameter, between Beckton and Abbey Mills using a Slurry TBM M&E installation in the shafts

6 Legal Responsibilities Employers Duties Section 2 of the Health and Safety at Work Act, etc. 1974, requires that suitable information and training be provided Regulation 10 of the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations requires employers to provide relevant information to new members YOUR duties Section 7 of the Health and Safety at Work Act, etc requires that YOU take reasonable care of yourself and others and co-operate with your employer Regulation 13 of the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations requires YOU to follow instructions and training given by your Employer

7 Emergency Arrangements In the event of an emergency alarm sounding, your host will escort you to the appropriate muster area. Your host will resume your visit when it has been deemed safe to return. If you have an accident or require medical attention please inform your host immediately. He or she, will arrange for appropriate first aid treatment.

13 General Behaviour No mobiles Use of mobiles Phones may only be used in a place of safety No Radios, etc No smoking except in designated areas on the surface

14 Weil s Disease (Leptospirosis) A bacterial disease which is spread by infected animal urine, most typically rats, and usually enters the body after contact with open wounds, cuts etc. Early symptoms are Flu type in appearance i.e. cold, headache, lethargy and blotchy skin. Protection / Prevention Measures: Cover all open wounds, cuts etc Good personal hygiene Report to supervisor and attend GP, stating the nature of your work Health and Hygiene Card issued at Induction

15 Personal Hygiene To help protect your hands and skin a mandatory glove policy is operated You will find hand care stations in the welfare facilities Use barrier creams and moisturiser to protect your skin Do not wear work clothes offsite, particularly when utilising off-site facilities such as shops. ALWAYS wash your hands before eating, smoking and after using the WC

16 Expectations Whilst on this site you are expected to take reasonable care of yourself and not endanger others. Be aware of plant movements Use only the designated walkways for access to offices and the shaft Please be aware that slips and trips are the biggest cause of accidents for people at work.

17 General Arrangements No person shall use, possess or be under the influence of alcohol or illegal drugs. Site speed limit is 10 mph Stay with your host at all times and do not interfere with any plant or equipment.

18 Positive Intervention This is a suggestion or observation that improves safety by identifying near misses, eliminates unsafe behaviours, identifies unsafe conditions and/or identifies design shortfalls that could lead to an incident or injury happening This is your opportunity to act on and report unsafe situations. TURN YOUR CONCERNS INTO ACTION! Report your observation to your escort, they will deal with your concern

19 One Escort can take a maximum of 3 Visitors into the construction area at any one time The 3:1 Rule Taking photos or filming is only permitted with permission from the MVBJV Project Manager. Please ensure you sign the induction register to confirm you have received, understood and will comply with this induction.

20 Waste On site MVB have waste targets of 75% of all waste diverted from landfill. Please help whilst you are on site and recycle where possible. Ensure you and those you are with use the correct bins.
