What is UVB or TLO1? Ultraviolet B (UVB) or TLO1 is an effective treatment for some types of skin disorders especially psoriasis. It is not a permanent cure but remission can last for up to a year. How often will I need to come for treatment? It will take approximately UVB treatments to clear most skin disorders. Treatment usually takes place three times a week which may cause a degree of inconvenience but it is important that appointments are kept and not changed as this can jeopardise the success of treatment. How does the treatment work? You will be exposed to ultraviolet light starting with a very low dose which is gradually increased. UVB is the part of sunlight which causes sunburn and you will develop a sun tan as a result of the treatment. It is very important that you do not expose your skin to the sun by sunbathing or sunbeds during the course of treatment. What happens first? Before starting UVB treatment a Health Education appointment will be arranged for you. During this appointment you will be given a detailed explanation of the treatment and any possible side effects. The nurse will arrange the appointments for your complete course of treatment and you will be asked to sign a consent form. 3

What happens when I come for treatment? l Before each treatment you need to remove all make-up, perfume or aftershave and jewellery l Do not apply any creams or ointments before attending for PUVA. Please bath or shower before attending for your appointment l The nurse will ask a few simple questions and will need to see your skin l Green goggles are provided to protect your eyes during the treatment and if your face is unaffected a UV visor will be provided l Male patients must wear a sock to protect their genitalia. Female patients are advised to wear no pants. Some patients require additional clothing to be worn. Any clothing/sock needs to be dark coloured and made of thick material and must not be altered during the course of treatment as this could result in severe burning to a previously unexposed area. If you fail to bring the same item then treatment cannot be given l You will be instructed to stand in a special cabinet to enable overall exposure of the body. The nurse will set the UVB cabinet to the correct dose and start treatment. The UVB cabinet is on a timer and will switch itself off. When all the lights have switched off you can step out of the cabinet and get dressed 4

How long will the course of treatment take? Most patients require 8-10 weeks of treatment however if your skin is clear before this time treatment may be discontinued. If your skin is not clear after ten weeks additional treatments may be prescribed, the nursing staff will advise you accordingly. Do I need to apply any cream or ointments? Do not apply any creams or ointments before attending for UVB. After UVB only use creams or ointment to your skin prescribed by your doctor or nurse. Please inform the nurse of any medications or tablets prescribed by your GP before or during the treatment, this will reduce the chance of any drug reactions with UVB treatment. 5

Are there any side effects to the UVB treatment? Like most medical treatments UVB has its short term and long term risks, but with the controls used, the risks are minimised. Your skin will be closely monitored throughout the course of treatment and the nurse will advise you accordingly if you experience any of the following: Short Term UVA is given under strictly controlled methods and therefore the long-term effects are highly unlikely to occur. You must ensure that you fully understand the procedure and precautions to take to minimise these risks: l Your skin condition may get worse before it gets better l Itching l Freckling l Eye damage (goggles are provided to protect your eyes during treatment) l Sunburn l Prickly heat l Blistering Any of these must be reported to the nurse before any further treatment is given. It may be necessary to reduce the exposure time or miss a treatment. 6

Long term UVB (TLO1) is given under strictly controlled methods and therefore the long term effects are highly unlikely to occur and are similar to those arising from natural sun exposure. You must ensure that you fully understand the procedure and precautions to take to minimise these risks: l Eye damage: Special green goggles are provided to prevent this l Ageing of the skin: This is only likely to arise after months or years of ultraviolet exposure l Skin Cancer: After months to years of treatment UVB may be associated with an increased risk of skin cancer If you have any concerns or reactions following treatment it is important that you contact the Dermatology Department for advice.
