1 Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences: Graduate and Postgraduate Diplomas Regulations Made by the Academic Board of Monash University Version incorporating amendments as at 1 March 2012 Part I Graduate and Postgraduate Diplomas (General) 1. Diplomas The graduate diplomas and postgraduate diplomas listed in Schedule I may be undertaken in the faculty pursuant to these regulations. 2. Interpretation In these regulations, unless the contrary intention appears candidate means a candidate for a diploma; course of study means the course of study for a diploma determined by the faculty board under these regulations; dean means the dean of the faculty; diploma means a graduate diploma or postgraduate diploma as the case may be; faculty board means the faculty board of the faculty; faculty information handout means a faculty handbook or such other publication concerning a course of study, whether bound or loose leaf or online or in other electronic form, as the faculty board determines from time to time; graduate diploma means a graduate diploma specified in Schedule I; head means the head of the relevant department as the case may be; and postgraduate diploma means a postgraduate diploma specified in Schedule I. 3. Course of study 3.1 A course of study consists of one or more of the following requirements, as determined by the faculty board under these regulations a project;
2 3.1.2 units; and clinical placement and other practical work. 3.2 The faculty board may from time to time determine the requirements of a course of study and in relation to these may determine, any matter or thing including but not limited to, requirements concerning number, timing, content and duration; sequence of units; attendance and participation; credit points; examination; assessment; satisfactory completion; and in relation to a project supervision, submission and distribution. 3.3 The faculty board must cause each determination under subsection 3.2 to be published in a faculty information handout. 4. Admission to candidature An applicant for admission to candidature must to the satisfaction of the faculty board, be adequately prepared for the course of study concerned; meet the specific admission requirements for the diploma, if any, as prescribed by the faculty board; and have any qualifications prescribed by the faculty board or qualifications deemed equivalent or a satisfactory substitute, by the faculty board. 5. Mode of candidature 5.1 Except as otherwise determined by the faculty board, a course of study may be undertaken by full time or part time candidature. 5.2 A candidate may with the consent of the faculty board change from full time to part time candidature or vice versa and in this event must complete the course of study within the time specified by the faculty board. 6. Time limits 6.1 Except as otherwise determined by the faculty board in any particular case, the maximum period of candidature for a diploma, including any period of Page 2
3 intermission, is the period published in a faculty information handout and determined in accordance with the universities policies. 6.2 The period of candidature for a diploma, includes any period of intermission granted to a candidate in accordance with section Intermission The faculty board may, from time to time and subject to any conditions specified, grant a candidate intermission for a period not exceeding 12 months in total, unless the faculty board in any particular case otherwise determines. 8. Qualification A candidate who satisfactorily completes the course of study for a diploma is qualified for the award of that diploma. 9. Transfer of candidature Where a candidate has qualified for admission to a graduate diploma under section 4; and withdrawn from candidature before satisfactorily completing the requirements of the graduate diploma but after satisfactorily completing the requirements for a related graduate certificate, 10. Academic progress the candidate shall be qualified for the award of a related graduate certificate as prescribed in Schedule II. Subject to Statute 6.2 Exclusion for unsatisfactory progress, the faculty board may review the academic progress of a candidate and after taking into account any recommendation from the head and any other person prescribed in these regulations; and giving the candidate an opportunity to be heard, 11. Credit limitations may terminate the candidate s candidature on the grounds of unsatisfactory progress. A candidate granted credit towards a diploma must complete the course of study in the time specified by the faculty board. 12. Compliance Page 3
4 12.1 Subject to this section, a candidate must comply with these regulations and with the relevant course of study requirements determined by the faculty board under these regulations as in force or published from time to time Where the faculty board considers that a candidate has, since first enrolling for a diploma, been unreasonably adversely affected by any change in the regulations or course of study requirements, the faculty board must permit the candidate to qualify for the diploma under the regulations or course of study requirements in force or published at some time during candidature, provided the faculty board is satisfied that the work so required to be completed is equivalent in standard to that currently required to complete the particular course of study.
