The Menninger Clinic and Foundation FY 2018 YTD Performance Through November Actual Goal January 2, 2018 Celebrating 2017 & Planning for 2018 In closing out 2017, we reflect on a year that presented significant challenges for our organization. Together we faced them and remained dedicated to our patients and to each other. I believe we are stronger and even more committed to our mission because of these shared experiences. I realize we can easily find ourselves dwelling on organizational challenges, our own negative misconceptions and the anxiety caused by change. However, we cannot lose sight of all the remarkable things that have been accomplished this year; most importantly the fact that YOU have provided healing and hope to more than 1,000 families through your work at the inpatient units, Outpatient Services, Pathfinder, The Gathering Place and support services. Please join me in reflecting on all the remarkable things we have accomplished together. I hope this partial list of Team Menninger s accomplishments provides encouragement for the New Year. Top highlights from first half of FY #3 national Best Hospital in psychiatry ranking from U.S. News & World Report 2. Caring for each other and our patients because of Hurricane Harvey 3. Substantial progress in upgrading patient rooms 4. Re-accreditation from The Joint Commission and re-designation as Pathways to Excellence hospital 5. Increased collaboration between the Boards of Directors of Menninger, Baylor College of Medicine and executives of both organizations 6. Completion of the staff s planning portion for new Outpatient and Education Center 7. Preparing the systems and processes for implementing an EHR resulting in contract negotiations with Cerner Corporation, a premier health information technology company We also can be encouraged by the exciting work that lies ahead as we embark on I look forward to celebrating another year of remarkable accomplishments, to include the strengthening our inpatient services, implementation of the Center s EHR, expansion of Outpatient Services, introduction of new services, maintaining high patient satisfaction, cultivating strong employee engagement and much more. I am confident that together we will accomplish our goals. We are Team Menninger! Happy New Year! Tony Gaglio, CPA, MBA Interim President and CEO Making Menninger Care More Accessible Mental health care is often vital for saving a life and returning meaning to life. The cost for care can exceed the resources and medical plan coverage for many individuals and families. Menninger is taking steps to make its comprehensive mental health care system more accessible when it s needed the most. Our patients now have these options: M-Lend Financial is an independent organization with more than two decades of interest-free lending for medical expenses to qualified applicants. Up to $50,000 may be financed over 12 months with no penalties for early payment or payoff of the balance. An M-Lend representative works directly with the guarantor of the Menninger patient. Beginning January 8, families with an adolescent receiving assessment and treatment on the Adolescent Treatment Program will receive statements that split out professional services provided by our licensed clinicians and specialty services from room, board, nursing care, academic tutoring and medications. ATP is piloting the split bill in response to numerous families who want to use their insurance benefits for their child s care. Finance staff members have worked diligently studying the cost of services and establishing a new contract and addendum that aligns with insurance reimbursement codes should the family file a claim to their insurance company. Finance estimates that approximately 60 percent of a total ATP bill may be reimbursable. However, overall cost for an adolescent s stay is expected to be about the same as the current bundled $1,700 daily rate after the first two weeks when the heaviest evaluations have been completed. Menninger provides in-network mental health care for individuals covered by ComPsych. For others, Menninger is

happy to work with insurers to negotiate a single case agreement. Over the past few years, single case agreements have steadily increased, especially for patients who have had a long history of mental health care. In these cases, the insurers invest in Menninger care based on our treatment outcomes and patient-centered treatment. Appointments Announced Congratulations to Cory Walker, DO, who will succeed Ben Weinstein as Program and Medical Director of the Comprehensive Psychiatric and Assessment Service. Dr. Walker has been with Menninger since 2013, and she has provided care within CPAS, Internal Medicine and Outpatient Services. She is board certified in psychiatry and internal medicine, is a graduate of Cottey College (Associate of Arts, Associate of Science), University of Kansas (BA, Psychology), Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) and Medical University of South Carolina (combined residency in internal medicine and psychiatry). We are also welcoming two faculty members who will be helping to provide medicine coverage on weekends and holidays. They will assist Internal Medicine Director Dr. Bettina Cardus and Dr. Walker in taking call duties. Please welcome them to Menninger when you see them doing consultations. Their pictures are included Opina to help you recognize them around campus. Angeline Opina, MD, is an Instructor in the Menninger Department of Psychiatry and a current Fellow in Adult Congenital Heart Disease at Baylor/Texas Children s Hospital. She is board certified in internal medicine and pediatrics and is board eligible in pediatric cardiology. Irvin Sulapas, MD, is an Assistant Professor in the Family & Community Medicine Department at Baylor. He is board certified in family medicine and has added qualifications in sports medicine. Walker Sulapas Major Gifts to Fund 2 Initiatives The Office of Philanthropy is pleased to share news of two recent major gift pledges in support of The Clinic s training and research programs: $400,000 from the Stedman West Foundation to establish the Betty Ann Stedman Psychiatric Nurse Training Program For nearly 15 years, the Stedman West Foundation has generously supported Menninger s legacy of providing an unparalleled post-graduate education to nurses who are new to the field of psychiatric nursing. In addition, the Foundation has assisted qualified Menninger employees in pursuing nurs- ing degrees. The establishment of the Betty Ann Stedman Psychiatric Nurse Training Program will offer greater support and flexibility to help meet The Clinic s highest priorities for nurse education. $100,000 from The Brown Foundation, Inc. to support an adolescent mental health study by Menninger researcher Carla Sharp, PhD Dr. Sharp is developing a clinical assessment tool to better identify the stage of disease in adolescents with mental illness. The tool will enable clinicians to more precisely match adolescents to the optimal mental health intervention, ensuring earlier and more effective treatment. In addition, fund-raising efforts to establish an endowment for psychiatry training in honor of Dr. Stuart Yudofsky have raised more than $1.6 million in cash and pledges to date. When fully funded, the endowment named for the Past Chair of the Baylor College of Medicine Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences Department will expand educational opportunities for psychiatry trainees. In total, Menninger s Office of Philanthropy has raised more than $3.02 million toward its FY18 fund-raising goal of $4 million. Continuum of Services Expands with Menninger 360 Menninger 360 is a new outpatient service for adults living in Houston. It is the only private psychiatric assertive community treatment (PACT) team in Texas. This team s multidisciplinary mental health staff is organized as an accountable, mobile mental health group that functions interchangeably to provide treatment, rehabilitation and support services to clients. With its wraparound approach, it works like a hospital without walls. Menninger 360 expands our continuum of care as the nation s only private mental health model of its type, offering subacute, intensive npatient, community integration, PACT, comprehensive outpatient assessments and outpatient care. The primary goals of PACT are to: Lessen or eliminate debilitating symptoms of mental illness and minimize or prevent recurrent acute episodes and hospitalizations Ensure the client s basic needs are being met, and enhance his/her quality of life Improve functioning in social and employment roles and activities Increase his/her participation in the community Lessen the family s burden of providing care The team will be the primary provider of services and will deliver highly individualized services to the client.

Philosophically, the program takes an assertive, proactive and prosocial approach to do whatever it takes. The model is specifically designed for adults with severe and persistent mental illness. While PACT was developed to work for clients with schizophrenia, other psychotic disorders and bipolar disorder, it is also ideal for adults who are not appropriate or interested in group-based treatment programs and who may be struggling with recovery from substance use. Menninger 360 is appropriate for clients who have not been helped by traditional mental health services and adults who need skills and practice in planning, sociability and emotional expression, leisure activities and personal interests, and management of anxiety. The initial team includes part-time psychiatrist Neil Puri, MD, who is splitting time with the Hope inpatient program; two full-time master s-level clinicians Matt Estey and Skye Heller, full-time nurse Amy Williams and full-time bachelor s-level generalist Laquinta Milson. Menninger 360 will have three Estey service tiers: Tier I will provide up to 10 hours of individualized services per week, Tier II will provide up to 20 hours of services per week and Tier III will provide up to 30 hours of services per week. Core team members will share on-call responsibilities 24/7. Menninger 360 already has two clients, and is flexible enough to work with clients discharging from any inpatient unit or from Outpatient Services. From startup, Menninger 360 will integrate outcome and value measures into treatment. Matt Estey, Director Best Place to Work: Thanking Your Co-workers Now a Snap When you appreciate assistance from a co-worker in another department or when a team member covers for you while you complete another priority, there s a new way to show your appreciation. Create an Awesome Job! Certificate of Recognition in the new app on The Link! To create the printable e-certificate, the new online tool can be launched from Quick Links on The Link. Open Menninger Recognitions, fill in the blanks and click on Submit. The Menninger Recognitions application notifies your co-worker that they re awesome and why, copies their manager, notifies HR and sends you a copy. In addition, all Awesome Job! Certificate recipients during each month will be entered into a drawing for a prize with a value not to exceed $100. This new peer-recognition program is presented by your Rewards and Recognition Committee, chaired by Andrea Preisinger, VP, Human Resources. Experts Prepare for Media Interviews Keeping Menninger top of mind among Houstonians requires a multi-pronged strategy. Sharing our clinicians knowledge with the community through the news media is among the tactics we use to provide information that interests the public and creates visibility for clinicians and Menninger. Last month, six of our clinicians sharpened their interviewing skills for talking with reporters and in front of the camera. Thanks to Matt Estey, LCSW, Director, Menninger 360; Vaughan Gilmore, LCSW, LCDC, Coordinator, Addictions Services; Megan Kale, LCSW, Director, Outpatient Assessments; Michelle Patriquin, PhD, Director, Outcomes Research; Shelly Simpson, LCSW, LCDC, Operations Program Manager, Pathfinder; and Cory Walker, MD, incoming Program and Medical Director, CPAS. Story topics, especially those that are timely and are on the minds of local residents, are always welcome. your suggestions to Nancy Trowbridge, Director of Communication. New Clothing Drive Underway for Women Affected by Violence Menninger social workers and licensed professional counselors have organized a drive to collect new clothing for the Houston Area Women s Center (HAWC), which assists women who have been traumatized by family violence or sexual assault. In Harris County, there were more than 36,800 reports of domestic violence (2015) and more than 2,300 records of sexual assault (2014). This year the Social Work Discipline s Giving Back Committee, headed by Elizabeth Castrellon, LCSW, Professionals Program, felt compelled to help support one of HAWC s most critical programs: supplying victims of sexual assault and domestic violence with new, comfortable clothing, which is often an immediate need. HAWC volunteers meet women in the emergency rooms of Houston s local hospitals to help them through the treatment process. The victims own clothing is often kept as evidence of a crime. In the case of domestic violence, the women (and children) often escape their homes, leaving all of their personal belongings behind. HAWC volunteers meet these women at the hospitals or shelters and provide them with essential clothing, explains Janice Poplack, LCSW, Director, Menninger Social Work. HAWC also offers these victims immediate crisis intervention, temporary safe housing and long-term counseling for trauma. Our social workers chose this non-profit charity because of the important and unique role HAWC plays in the Houston Community for women and children. In addition, a number of our social workers have volunteered for HAWC s crisis hot line, which inspired some to pursue their graduate degree in clinical social work. New clothing collection boxes are located in each building

on campus through Friday, January 19. New T-shirts (without messages), stretch or yoga pants, sports bras and under-wear and socks in all adult sizes, and especially larger women s sizes, are needed. Your donation will be greatly appreciated. Teen Recovery Meeting Now Offered For Adolescent Treatment Program patients dealing with substance use disorder, Menninger now offers a Teen Recovery Meeting on campus. The group is facilitated by Teen & Family Services of Houston to help inpatients, outpatients and patient alumni, aged 13-17, learn more from each other about living in recovery. The group meets weekly on Mondays at 7:30 pm. For more information, contact Dalanna Burris, LCDC, ATP s chemical dependency counselor. Cheers to Our IT Team Capable, customer focused and connected to the Menninger mission, the Information Technology team ranked first among the small hospital division in the Best Hospital IT Departments annual honors from Healthcare IT News. Only 20 hospitals nationwide across all sizes received the award. Awards were based in part on surveys completed by IT employees, supervisors, leaders and contractors. Earning the honor of Best Hospital IT Team, small hospital, is a goal the team chose to pursue. The IT team (members) are just like a family, said Tina Baugh, Director. They collaborate on everything, they don t make major decisions without each other, and when there is a crisis or an urgent need, everyone piles in and helps. Additionally, since the IT team is one part of a smaller organization, team members can actually see the difference they are making every day in patients lives. We are very close to our customers, and so when we work on a project and when we resolve requests we see the immediate impact it has on clinical care, Baugh added. It s very fulfilling and they really like making that difference. Next up: The IT Team will be collaborating with clinicians and other leaders at Menninger to guide the organization from a paper-based medical health system to an electronic health record system. Chief Information Officer President Justin Coffey, MD, said he expects the EHR to kick off in about a month. Transitions: Best Wishes to 6 We are sad to see these colleagues depart for new career opportunities. We wish each one of them well. Before they go, we re having an appreciation reception for those on the Leadership Team Friday, January 5, from 1 to 2 pm in the classrooms. Autumn Clouse is leaving her post in Finance to become Chief Financial Officer for a local behavioral health organization. In her three years at Menninger, she has served as a valuable resource for clinical program and support department leaders, especially when preparing budgets. She has also helped lead the annual financial audit, as well as improved forecasting financial performance and planning for new services. Major Bradshaw, PhD, Chris Fowler, PhD, Alok Madan, PhD, MPH, and Ben Weinstein, MD, will be joining a local hospital. Colleagues on CPAS will miss the services of Drs. Bradshaw, Madan and Weinstein. Since 2011, Dr. Fowler has provided invaluable individual therapy for patients throughout the hospital and Outpatient Services in addition to his leadership of clinical research and important contributions to the psychiatric literature. For the past two years, he has also served as Director of Psychology. Before joining the CPAS staff as a neuropsychologist in 2011, Dr. Bradshaw consulted on numerous complex diagnostic cases. Dr. Madan is completing his year as a McNair Scholar and senior psychologist. He has been instrumental in treating adults with severe pain and, like Dr. Fowler, has had many research papers published. He has been on the Menninger staff the past four years. Dr. Weinstein joined the CPAS team as program and medical director in 2010, with extensive experience with psychiatry and neurology patients in South Carolina. The National Alliance on Mental Illness of South Carolina honored him as physician of the year in Jennifer Jackson will be leaving Houston to return to her hometown of Muncie, IN, where she has accepted the position of Director of Nursing for Psychiatric Services in the University of Indiana hospital system. She has served on Menninger s Professionals Program team for seven years, the past three of which have been as nurse manager. Advancement of Knowledge Alok Madan, PhD, and colleagues present findings from a double-blind randomized controlled trial comparing motor cortex transcranial direct current stimulation (tdcs) and prefrontal cortex tdcs to both sham and active control as a post-surgical opioid sparing strategy. Overall, results from this cortical-target-optimization study suggest that anodal tdcs over the left prefrontal cortex may be a reasonable approach to reducing post-total knee arthroplasty opioid requirements. (Brain Stimulation, November-December 2017, 10(6), ) All of our recent contributions to the field of psychiatry are available on the Clinical Resources page of the website.

Upcoming Events January 9 Clinicians are encouraged to drop in any time from 8 am to 10 am in the gym for a special presentation for caregivers who balanced work and home fronts during Hurricane Harvey entitled, Drumming in the New Year: Continuing to Move in the Wake of Harvey. The music therapy experience will be presented by Bill Matney, a well-known music therapist with a special interest in caregivers who have been through a natural disaster. His appearance is being sponsored by the American Music Therapy Association and Texas Medical Center. January 12 On-campus blood drive from 10 am to 2 pm. Check The Link for how to sign up in advance. January 24 Town Hall meeting for all faculty and staff will begin at 3:30 pm in the Classrooms. January 28 Annual training must be completed by all faculty and employees. February 23 Free barbecue meal with all of the fixings prepared by our own Dietary Team, a chili cook-off and western attire contest will highlight Menninger s annual celebration on Go Texan Day. Executive Assistant and Board Relations Manager Rus Trebilcox shared his enthusiastic holiday spirit. Talented staff and patients added their personality in the competitive gingerbread house contest. Compass placed first (pictured at left). Thanks for Feedback on Survey Thanks to the 33 faculty and staff members who completed the Survey Monkey questionnaire about getting organizational information through newsletters, The Link and other resources. Results clearly show a reliance on the Update newsletter and The Link (intranet), which are preferred at least two to one over town hall meetings. The categories of organizational news in highest demand are: 1. Events 2. Strategic direction 3. Feedback from patients and families 4. Improvement initiatives 5. Financial performance 6. Accolades for co-workers Addictions counselors gathered at Pathfinder for their holiday lunch meeting.
