This is at a time when there are urgent public health problems arising from the Israeli offensive threatening the health of the entire population. The destruction of the sole Gaza power plant leaves sewage pumps incapacitated. The lack of electricity combined with the destruction of at least 16 water wells has left 1.8 million people without access to water. More than 450,000 people forcibly displaced, with 250,000 of them seeking shelter in UN facilities only able to cope with a fifth of that number, and another 30,000 in government schools and institutions. The over-crowding and lack of adequate water and sanitation facilities has seen an increase in the incidence of viral meningitis. Diarrhoea and scabies are rampant in the overcrowded shelters, with clean drinking water all but impossible to obtain. The Ministry of Health calls on national and international organizations to immediately address the looming public health crisis by: 1) Supporting the provision of PHC and Public Health service, to ensure access to all including internally displaced people; providing adequate supply of drugs required for prevention and treatment of infectious and communicable disease, and serving chronic patients; 2) Restoring the electricity supply, water wells and sewage pumping capacity as a matter of urgency; 3) Providing access to clean and safe water to all residents of Gaza; 4) Providing longer-term shelters for the tens of thousands of displaced persons whose homes have been completely destroyed, until rebuilding is possible; Joint Health Operation Room Sitrep 19 August 4, 2014 Page 4/8

5 5) Restoring Gaza s four evacuated hospitals, especially the Wafa rehabilitation hospital and Al Durrah paediatric hospital, to operational capacity as soon as possible; 6) Providing adequate water & sanitation facilities in shelters for displaced persons; 7) Providing hygiene kits to displaced persons. Immediate needs Drugs and disposables (updated lists Attached) Urgent need for psycho-tropic drugs, especially emergency drug kits to use for patients with mental illness who have relapses and families in especially severe circumstances of forced displacement, trauma and anxiety. More than 24 medical equipments in different quantities (estimated cost $3 million) and tens of spare parts (estimated cost $230,000) (updated list attached) Urgently needed medical missions In light of the current emergency situation in Gaza the following medical missions are urgently needed: Neurosurgery (cranial and spinal cord) specialists Anesthesiologists Plastic surgery specialists War general surgery specialist Advanced orthopedic specialists Burn management specialists Maxillofacial surgery specialists Orthopedics surgery specialists Vascular surgery specialists ICU nurse specialists For full description of the role and missions application: alaqra@yahoo.com Referrals According to the Palestinian Health Information Center 294 patients were referred: Date / Referral Destination Egypt Jordan East Jerusalem s 01-01July July July July - 2 August Total On August 1, 2014 A medical delegation from was able to reach Gaza.
