1 Malaysia and Borneo 2014 Introductory information Nature of expedition: Adventure, cultural and activity based experience to include: 5 day PADI diving qualification and opportunity for subsequent dives on Perhentian Islands. 5 day Jungle trek. Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre or river rafting experience depending on group choice. 5 day community project working and living with a jungle village community. Transit days in the cities of Kuala Lumpur and Kota Kinabalu. Duration 28 days leaving after the end of the summer term Cost : 3,950 This is to include all activities during the expedition, travel to and from Heathrow, PADI diving registration, 5 day diving course and 2 additional days diving and a group T shirt or sweatshirt. Year groups Open to present year groups 10, 11 and 12 Groups and staffing The number of groups has not been limited but each group will be independent of each other, travelling out at different times and unlikely to meet each other during the expedition. There will be 2 school staff leaders and 1 World Challenge leader per group. Maximum group size of 14 pupils who will be organized into mixed year and gender groups. Heather Wallwork is the main school leader working closely with and supported by Tessa Bennie, Caroline Boyfield and Keith Dawson. This provides staff contacts in both schools.

2 Aims of the expedition To prepare students for adulthood by opening their eyes to the real world and giving them the attitude and ability to embrace it. Experience a culture and environment in which they are unfamiliar. Give students the opportunity to experience living with and cooperating with other students and staff in an unfamiliar environment. Taking them out of their comfort zone. Develop self-confidence, personal awareness, communication and leadership skills. PADI diving qualification. Gain the knowledge and confidence to travel independently. Strengthen university application forms and have the opportunity to earn up to 70 UCAS points. Note regarding omission of the Duke of Edinburgh Award Previous long haul expeditions have included elements of the D of E Award. This award body is making it increasingly difficult to include elements from the award into school based long haul expeditions. It is not possible for students to properly embrace the aims of the award whilst keeping them safe in an unfamiliar environment. To include the D of E expedition and residential section would put them in a contrived situation and detract from the challenging and cultural experience which is on offer. In previous years there has still been a requirement for students to complete training and practice expeditions prior to the long haul expedition and therefore there is little gain in including the assessed expedition in the trip. It costs 170 for an assessed expedition. Risk factors World Challenge is responsible for the safety of the expedition. This is managed through: Well qualified expedition leaders and specific training for school staff. Comprehensive Insurance Cover provided by Royal Sun Alliance. Emergency backup systems. Risk assessments and casualty evacuation procedures.

3 Leaders The Expedition Leader is employed by World Challenge as a technically qualified expert and carries overall executive responsibility for the safety, conduct and personal development of the challengers. As a legal representative of World Challenge, the Expedition Leader is answerable for all decisions made on expedition. They hold overall responsibility and liability for the expedition. The School Leaders hold pastoral care responsibilities and associated liabilities for the Challengers exactly as they would in school or on any school trip. To ensure the School Leaders are prepared for the expedition they must commit to complete the following: A 16 hour / 2 day first aid course. The training expedition. The 1 day Expedition Preparation Conference. The group size will be a maximum of 14 Challengers accompanied by the Expedition Leader and two School Leaders. Insurance 5,000,000 personal liability cover for eventualities including search and rescue, repatriation, medical and emergency travel expenses. Emergency backup cover The expedition is all about learning through experience but never at the expense of safety. World Challenge is renowned for the standard of comprehensive, unrivalled safety and backup procedures. 24-hour Operations Centre, fully equipped and manned with trained Incident Managers. Emergency system supported by World Challenge in country agents. Supported by First Assist an international medical assistance agency, that has access to an international network of medical support centres that advise on recommended hospitals and medical assistance. State of the art satellite equipment including satellite phone and satellite distress beacon which, when activated, sends a signal to a UK Rescue Control Centre which then alerts World Challenge Operations Centre of the team and their position. Rapid response team ready to travel overseas if required. Close working relationship with Embassies and High Commissions in all countries. Ability to divert expeditions up to the time of departure if deemed necessary and also whilst in country.

4 Risk assessment and CASEVAC The World Challenge overseas risk assessment has three elements Generic. Site specific. On-going. Risk assessment forms part of the preventative measures used to minimise risk during expeditions. Adventurous activities however are never entirely risk free, and all expeditions need to be supported by a reactive system which can respond whenever incidents occur. World Challenge has a trained and experienced duty team available 24-hours a day, 7 days a week. Casualty evacuation information is provided for every stage of the expedition so if an incident occurs the Expedition Leader is in the best possible position to deal with it. Fundraising Students will have 2 full years during which they can fundraise for the event. This is likely to include two previously successful group events, the Stamford Then and Now Calendar and bag packing at Morrison s as well as individual fundraising which students initiate amongst friends, family and neighbours. They will be encouraged to organize two events within school. World Challenge offer help and opportunities with fund raising by running such events as annual challenger runs. They provide useful ideas and templates to make organizing fundraising activities less time consuming. Project All the projects are community centred and based in remote villages in the jungle. Examples of these are: Long Atip Village Sarowak. Working on regenerating a long house which is a central building within the village where children go to school and villagers hold meetings and events. Bario Sarawah. An environmental based project regenerating a jungle area by planting trees and plants in areas destroyed by deforestation. World Challenge provide a budget to be spent on the project phase which covers the cost of the students accommodation and food and materials needed for any work carried out. The students decide how best to spend this money and source the materials locally if possible. Groups may decide to fundraise to provide extra or ongoing support to the community.
