Brief Job Description: Individual on the job provides patient care and help maintain a suitable environment. Some of the key responsibilities of the General Duty Assistant are to provide patient s daily care, patient s comfort, patient s safety and patient s health needs. Personal Attributes: This job requires the individual to work in collaboration with Doctors and Nurses and other healthcare providers and deliver the healthcare services as suggested by them. The individual should be result oriented. The individual should also be able to demonstrate basic patient care skills, communication skills and ethical behaviour. The individual should be willing to work in wards or clinics in shifts.

Core Skills or Generic Skills are a group of skills that are essential to learning and working in today's world. These skills are typically needed in any work environment. In the context of the OS, these include communication related skills that are applicable to most job roles. Description gives a short summary of the unit content. This would be helpful to anyone searching on a database to verify that this is the appropriate OS they are looking for. Function is an activity necessary for achieving the key purpose of the sector, occupation, or area of work, which can be carried out by a person or a group of persons. Functions are identified through functional analysis and form the basis of OS. Job role defines a unique set of functions that together form a unique employment opportunity in an organisation. Knowledge and Understanding are statements that together specify the technical, generic, professional and organisational specific knowledge that an individual needs in order to perform to the required standard. NOS are Occupational Standards that apply uniquely in the Indian context. A medical instruction, for patients who may not take any substances orally for various reasons Occupation is a set of job roles, which perform similar/related set of functions in an industry. OS specify the standards of performance an individual must achieve when carrying out a function in the workplace, together with the knowledge and understanding they need to meet that standard consistently. Occupational Standards are applicable both in the Indian and global contexts. Organisational Context includes the way the organisation is structured and how it operates, including the extent of operative knowledge managers have of their relevant areas of responsibility. Performance Criteria are statements that together specify the standard of performance required when carrying out a task. Qualifications Pack Code is a unique reference code that identifies a qualifications pack. Qualifications Pack comprises the set of OS, together with the educational, training and other criteria required to perform a job role. A Qualifications Pack is assigned a unique qualification pack code. Scope is the set of statements specifying the range of variables that an individual may have to deal with in carrying out the function which have a critical impact on the quality of performance required. Sector is a conglomeration of different business operations having similar businesses and interests. It may also be defined as a distinct subset of the economy whose components share similar characteristics and interests. Sub-functions are sub-activities essential to fulfill the achieving the objectives of the function.

The purpose of grooming is to promote mental, physical and personal health and also social wellbeing of the patient. This OS provides assistance about performing tasks such as caring for teeth, shaving and brushing hair. This unit covers assisting nurse in grooming the patient: Depending on the patient condition and request GDA has to make a decision on the kind of grooming support that needs to be provided to the patient from the list below: o Hair Styling and Makeup o o o o o Shaving Brushing (Mouth care) Finger and Toe nail Care Maintain the grooming routine, if already established by the patient and encourage the patient to do it on their own. Always use simpler and safer grooming tools. The purpose of dressing to help them continue with the daily ritual of dressing and boost their esteem and mood at the same time. It helps promote their individuality and personality and makes them feel good about themselves. This unit covers the following: Consideration needs to be given to the following while dressing the patient: o The steps involved in the process of dressing like which limb to undress first o Ensure that the clothing is comfortable as per the patients need (woollens in cold weather and cotton in warm weather) o Right size of shoes and slippers with non-slip surface to avoid falls o Maintaining patient privacy by following a correct technique of undressing and dressing During dressing observe and ensure that: o Cloths fit the patient o Remove all accessories like belts, jewellery and scarfs to avoid inconvenience o Shoes/slippers are of the right size and non-slippery to prevent fall Performance Criteria (PC) w.r.t. the Scope Element Performance Criteria To be competent, the user/individual on the job must be able to: PC1. The purpose of feeding is to provide nutrition for physical and mental wellbeing, increase energy levels, enhance immunity and hasten the healing process. This unit/task covers the following: Consideration to the following are to be given due importance by GDA when feeding o Religion and cultural background o Nature of the illness and condition of the patient o Personal preferences o Financial condition of the patient/relatives Ensuring a healthy and well-balanced diet is fed to the patient in order to ensure recovery from the condition.
