LORETTO HEIGHTS DEPARTMENT OF NURSING MISSION STATEMENT The mission of the Regis University Department of Nursing is to provide high quality, valuescentered, professional nursing education and to strengthen commitment to community service. In the Jesuit tradition, we challenge students of all cultural backgrounds to seek excellence in academic pursuits, and to think logically, critically, and creatively in formulating a global view of nursing and health care. We seek to provide opportunities to identify personal values, to be socially responsible, and to develop competence in nursing practice and leadership in the provision and transformation of health care for the betterment of society. DEPARTMENT OF NURSING PHILOSOPHY The Department of Nursing philosophy is built upon the goals of Regis University. Central to the philosophy is the commitment to help empower individuals through education for leadership in service to others. Fundamental beliefs concerning the nature of the individual, of nursing, of environment, of health and illness, of education, and of learning, express the values and provide direction for the nursing programs. The Nature of the Individual: The faculty of the Department of Nursing believes that each individual is unique and has intrinsic worth. Individuals have common needs as well as differences influenced by values, experiences, and knowledge. Individuals have the capacity to grow, to change, and to make choices. The freedom to choose and to have one's choice respected is central to the concept of intrinsic worth of individuals. Culturally transmitted values and beliefs are at the very core of life choices within every society. Throughout the life span, the individual lives as a member of society, creating and being created within that context. Each individual shares the responsibility to contribute to this dynamic interaction. The Nature of Nursing: The faculty believes that nursing is a discipline with an evolving body of knowledge and a profession whose goal is the promotion, maintenance, and restoration of the health and integrity of individuals and society. The practice of nursing is centered in interaction with individuals and society. This interaction is multifaceted and multidimensional, characterized by the full breadth and depth of human caring. The interactive nature of nursing is also reflected in its collaborative orientation to health care delivery. Within the health care network, the professional nurse integrates the roles of clinician, teacher, investigator, and leader-manager to provide nursing care. The Nature of Environment: The faculty believes that the environment is all that surrounds a person. The environment is the dynamic milieu within which a person lives and interacts. The person is continually influencing and being influenced by internal and external aspects of the environment. A favorable environment enhances the health status of individuals and society. 8

The Nature of Health and Illness: The faculty believes that health and illness are multidimensional unfolding concepts integral to nursing practice. Inherent in an understanding of health and illness are concern for the individual in interaction with the environment. Health and illness are subjective concepts individually and societally defined. Health and illness are lived experiences. The concept of health incorporates an individual's ability to maximize the potential for living. Lack of the ability to promote personal well being constitutes the concept of illness. The Nature of Education: The Department of Nursing faculty believes that education is a life-long process. Formal education incorporates and builds upon the broad base of previous life experiences. Nursing education in a university setting provides the opportunity to acquire the knowledge and competency required of a professional nurse. Interaction, reflection, and practice are utilized to foster the synthesis necessary to develop the critical skills and creativity of the competent nurse. In order to meet the needs of students, the educational programs incorporate individualized approaches to the learning environment through a variety of options. Various teaching methods, reflecting both traditional and adult learning styles, are incorporated into the teaching-learning process. The Nature of Learning: The Department of Nursing faculty believes that learning is the dynamic and individual process that embodies the continual search for truth, values, and a just existence. Learning has both practical and theoretical aspects and occurs both formally and informally. As a life long process, learning is characterized by maturation and individuation, interaction and reflection. The context of education, the creation of a supportive and motivating environment, and the content of education are mutually important. Honor Code Students and faculty in the Department of Nursing at Regis University are committed to excellence in teaching and learning in an environment of honesty and integrity. Integrity -- academic, personal and professional -- is one of the most pressing issues facing institutions of higher education and health care. A code of honor not only defines the appropriateness of student and faculty behavior, it also serves as a means to measure the quality of the University. Statement of beliefs: We believe that The administration, faculty, and students share the responsibility for academic, personal, and professional integrity. Integrity depends on the attitude and spirit of the student body to create an atmosphere that 15

promotes honesty. It is the responsibility of faculty and administration to foster and encourage honesty and a sense of fairness. As a member of the health care professions, clients' lives may depend upon our personal and collective integrity and honesty. It is a shared responsibility to achieve an atmosphere of trust in which all members believe their right to learn are protected and unimpeded by dishonest behavior. Components: A set of assumptions about academic integrity A set of assumptions about personal and professional integrity A pledge to uphold the standards and practices of the honor code, and Formalized disciplinary and grievance procedures outlined under Admission, Progression, and Retention Policies in this handbook. Statement of Assumptions about Academic Integrity Know Your Rights. Do not let other students in your class diminish the value of your achievement by taking unfair advantage. Report any academic dishonesty you see. Acknowledge Your Sources. Whenever you use words or ideas that are not your own when writing a paper, use quotation marks where appropriate and cite your source in a footnote, and back it up at the end with a list of sources consulted. Protect Your Work. In examinations, do not allow your neighbors to see what you have written; you are the only one who should receive credit for what you know. Avoid Suspicion. Do not put yourself in a position where you can be suspected of having copied another person's work, or of having used unauthorized notes in an examination. Even the appearance of dishonesty may undermine your instructor's confidence in your work. Do your own work. The purpose of assignments is to develop your skills and measure your progress. Letting someone else do your work defeats the purpose of your education, and may lead to serious charges against you. Always tell the truth when discussing your work with your instructor. Any attempt to deceive may destroy the relation of teacher and student. Statement of Assumptions about Personal and Professional Integrity Honor the nurse-patient relationship by assuming personal responsibility for being in physical and mental condition to give safe nursing care and for the knowledge and skills necessary to give this care. Behaviors that honor the nurse-patient relationship include, but are not limited to, the following. The nursing student will: Carry out procedures with competence and with the guidance of a qualified person Avoid doing physical or mental harm to others 16

Intentionally do no physical or mental harm to others Exhibit competent behavior in connection with care of a client Inform the instructor and clinical facility with immediacy if alternative measures for care are necessary Respect the privacy of a client through omission of their name on written academic assignments Respect the privacy of clients by not discussing confidential information in inappropriate areas, such as elevators, cafeterias, or cell phones. Respect the privacy of a client by refusing to discuss patient information with third parties who do not have a legitimate need to know. Never falsify patient records Never fabricate patient experiences on assignments unless so noted Report omissions or errors in treatments or medication with immediacy. Students may also contact their advisor by or telephone. For online students, Academic Advisors correspond via . 18

Each graduate emphasis, ranging from credit hours, must be completed within a five-year time limit. A Degree Plan is the document which details the specific courses required and must signed by the student, the Admission Counselor, and the Program Advisor during the first term in the program. The 5-year time limit is computed from the beginning of the term students start coursework. Any student whose Degree Plan expires before completion of the Program must submit a written request ( is acceptable) for a Degree Plan Extension to the Academic Advisor. If the student does not have a Degree Plan Extension, that student will not be eligible for graduation. Reapplication and readmission to the Program may be required and a new degree plan signed. Since the original Program may not be available, students are encouraged to complete degree requirements prior to expiration of the degree plan. Add/Drop and Course Withdrawal Information Campus-based students must attend classes for which they are enrolled. Campus-based students who wish to drop a course during the drop/add period (first week of the course) need to contact their Faculty Advisor about this decision in order not to jeopardize uninterrupted progression in the program. The drop process itself may be executed by the student him or herself by contacting Enrollment Services or online through WebAdvisor. To confirm course enrollment, online students must log on to each course in which they are enrolled by Thursday of the first week of the term and respond to the Threaded Discussion items and/or s sent by the faculty. Students who do not log on prior to 8 a.m. Friday of the first week of the term will be dropped from the course. If a student has logged on during week one, and later decides to drop the course, it is the student s responsibility to initiate drop procedures. This can be done by telephoning Enrollment Services and requesting to drop. A campus-based student who wishes to withdraw from a course after the drop/add date and before the end of the withdrawal period must contact their Academic Advisor to initiate this process. Online students must contact the Administrative Assistant for the Online Nursing Program to initiate this process. Students may be eligible for pro-rated rather than full fee for course withdrawals within the withdrawal period. Program Grade Requirements Students are required to maintain a minimum cumulative GPA in graduate level course work completed for credit. Only grades received in courses at the 600-level are computed into the MS Program GPA. "A" and "B" grades represent superior or satisfactory progress toward the MS degree. The grade of "C" is a passing grade in the MS Program and counts as credit toward graduation. It is understood to mean less-than-satisfactory achievement. A grade lower than "C" will not be counted toward graduation but will be included in the student's cumulative GPA. A student who receives a grade of "C" in two courses or who receive a grade of C or lower in a repeat attempt at the 600-level course will be subject to academic review and may be suspended from the Program regardless of GPA. Suspensions may be appealed to the Director of the Department of Nursing. 19

Students who receive the grade "C-" or lower for a 600-level course must repeat the course and receive a grade of "C" or better in order to progress in the Graduate Program. Guidelines for Repeat Grade Improvement Option appear in the Regis University Bulletin. Overload Anyone wishing to exceed the maximum academic load must present a formal written request for overload to the appropriate Graduate Program Chair prior to the beginning of the class. Ordinarily, only a student with a minimum cumulative GPA of and no grades of incomplete is eligible to apply for an overload. Grading System Letter grades and grade points for the Graduate Program in Nursing at Regis University are assigned as follows: Grade Grade Point Numerical Point Range A A B B B C C C D D D F 0.00 Below 64 Grade of Incomplete A grade of "I/F" denotes that required work for the course is incomplete due to extraordinary circumstances. Students must submit a written request prior to the last day of class. The length of time to complete the work is guided by University policy, but must be completed by the end of the semester following the one in which the Incomplete is taken. Students on probationary status may not receive an "I" without the written permission of the Director of the Department of Nursing. Requests must be submitted in writing prior to the end of each course. Grade Appeals All grade appeals from students must be initiated within four weeks from the last class meeting of the course being challenged. The procedure for appealing a disputed grade is detailed in the Regis University Bulletin. 20

Grade Reports Official grades may only be released by the Office of the Registrar and are available online through WebAdvisor or from the Registrar s Office. Students requiring early grade release may request an unofficial notification of course grades by previous arrangement with the course faculty. For campus-based students, unofficial grade forms are available in the Graduate Office in Carroll Hall. The student must provide the faculty with the completed form and a stamped, self-addressed envelope prior to or during the last week of class. The faculty will then complete the unofficial grade information and mail it to the student once the grade is determined. Grades will not be disclosed by telephone. Online student may request unofficial grades from their faculty by . Unofficial grades may be sent by RegisNET to online students. Academic Standing If a student's GPA falls below in the MS Program, the student will be placed on academic probation. A student placed on probation has one semester to raise her/his GPA to A student who fails to raise the cumulative GPA to will be suspended from the MS Program. In addition, a student who receives a grade of "C" or less in two courses at the 600 level will be subject to academic review and may be suspended from the Program. Suspensions may be appealed to the Director of the Department of Nursing. Students will be notified of a change in academic status in writing from the Dean of the Rueckert- Hartman School for Health Professions. Failure to provide or receive such notice will not invalidate the action taken. Academic probation, suspension, and dismissal designations are posted to student transcripts. Additional information regarding academic standing is specified in the Regis University Bulletin. Suspensions may be appealed in writing to the Department of Nursing Director within six weeks of being placed on suspension. If the issue is not resolved to the student's satisfaction, the suspension may be appealed to the Dean of the Rueckert-Hartman School for Health Professions within ten days of the Director's decision. The decision of the Dean is final. Readmission following suspension will be determined on an individual basis by a faculty committee in collaboration with the Department of Nursing Director based on the following criteria: Student applying for readmission to the Graduate Program in Nursing must fulfill admission criteria in effect at the time of application for readmission. Student must present documentation indicating that the reasons for suspension have been satisfactorily addressed. Student must meet with their Academic Advisor who will arrange appropriate follow up with the Department Chair of the Student Affairs Committee (SAC) during which the reasons for lack of success in the initial admission to the Program will be addressed to determine if these conditions have been changed in such a way that the likelihood of success is now increased. Any student readmitted following suspension will be admitted on a probationary status. Disciplinary Review Process 21

Procedures for reviewing incidents of academic dishonesty are outlined in the Regis University Bulletin. Procedures for reviewing violations of the University s Standards of Conduct are outlined in the Regis University Student Handbook. Incidents of unsafe behavior or unprofessional conduct in a clinical or academic setting are also grounds for disciplinary action, including, but not limited to expulsion from the program. The Dean of the Rueckert-Hartman School for Health Professions has sole discretion for determining which procedure and provisions apply in individual cases. Withdrawal from the University A student who chooses to withdraw from the Program should give written notice of this decision to the Graduate Program Chair. In addition, a form must be completed, and signed by the Director of the Department of Nursing and the Dean of the Rueckert-Hartman School for Health Professions. A student who withdraws from the Program may be allowed readmission without reapplication and review if the following conditions are met: The student was in good academic standing before withdrawal. The student returns to the Program within one calendar year of withdrawal. The student who meets these criteria must submit a written request for readmission to the Graduate Program Chair. If the stated conditions are not met, the student must apply for readmission to the Program. Initial acceptance into the Program does not guarantee readmission. GRADUATION ACTIVITIES Graduation Application The Graduation Application Form must be completed and signed by the student. The signed form must be submitted to the RHSHP graduation coordinator the semester prior to the semester in which the student expects to graduate. Specific application deadlines are available online at A Regis cumulative grade point average of 3.00 for graduate students is required in order to apply for graduation. Failing to apply by the deadline or falling below the required cumulative grade point average may delay graduation. Pinning and Recognition Ceremony The Pinning and Recognition Ceremony, steeped in nursing tradition, symbolizes the culmination of the academic preparation required to become a professional nurse. All graduating students are strongly urged to participate in this meaningful ceremony. The ceremony is coordinated by the Loretto Heights Department of Nursing. The ceremony is held twice each year, in December and May, and in conjunction with commencement. The ceremony signals a 'right of passage' into the profession of nursing and serves as a closure activity for students, families, and faculty. Commencement 22

Attendance at commencement is encouraged. The Office of the University Registrar is notified through the Application for Graduation of the student s intent to participate in commencement. See the Regis University Bulletin for additional Graduation and Commencement information. UNIVERSITY POLICIES Sexual Harassment Policy Statement Sexual harassment is a form of sexual discrimination and is illegal. A comprehensive sexual harassment policy is covered in the Regis University Student Handbook. Any incidents of harassment should be reported to your faculty advisor, the Director or Dean. Drug Free Community Policy Statement Regis University is committed to preventing the use of illegal substances by students, faculty, and staff and to encouraging responsible behavior regarding alcohol and legal addictive substances through policy, needs assessment, education, and treatment. The Drug Free Community Policy is outlined in the Regis University Student Handbook. CLASSROOM AND CLINICAL POLICIES Preceptors Graduate students work closely with preceptors for guided practice. The faculty believe that a more positive experience is assured when students select their own preceptors with guidance from the clinical faculty. This allows students to use their networking skills, assures the preceptor works at a time and in a geographic location acceptable to the student and limits personality issues. You will be required to contact a protential preceptor and turn in a signed copy of the preceptor agreement prior to beginning any clinical experience. We also request that all preceptors have a copy of their CV on file at Regis to assure only qualified health care providers serve as preceptors. Cell Phone and Pager Etiquette Cell phones are not allowed in classrooms or any clinical agencies. If you carry a phone routinely, the power must be off while you are in class. Pagers may be carried in the classroom only if they are on silent or vibrate mode. If you receive a silent page, please wait until there is a break in the class to respond to the page. Emergency Notification In the case of a serious emergency, please discuss the details with course faculty ahead of time whenever possible. Faculty will help you determine the need to miss class or clinical. Class Cancellation Due to the tight scheduling of nursing courses, classes are rarely canceled. Classes are occasionally canceled by Regis University, due to inclement weather. Cancellation of classes is announced over 23

local radio stations. In addition, a special phone number is available to check for emergency closures: Guide to Formal Papers Denver Weather Line: In 1989, the faculty of the Department of Nursing adopted the American Psychological Association (APA) guidelines as the format for all formal papers submitted in partial fulfillment of requirements in the Department of Nursing. It is mandatory that all students in the Graduate Nursing Program learn to use correct APA guidelines for format and style. Copies of software or the manual itself are available from the Bookstore. Evaluations At the conclusion of each course, students are requested to evaluate both the course and the faculty member teaching the course. Evaluations are used to flag problems and to help faculty improve course content and presentation. All evaluations are anonymous. Course evaluations are separate from faculty evaluations and provide an opportunity for students to differentiate curriculum issues from other issues. The Department of Nursing strongly encourages students to use course and faculty evaluations to provide input on the course and faculty from a student perspective, which are critical to the success of the MS Program. Unsafe or Unprofessional Behavior Regardless of previous academic or clinical performance, unprofessional conduct or unsafe behavior in the clinical or classroom setting may be grounds for immediate dismissal from the MS Program. The MS Program reserves the right to deny admission or continued matriculation to any students who would pose an unreasonable risk of harm to themselves or others, or any unreasonable risk of disruption to the academic processes of the Department of Nursing, the Rueckert-Hartman School for Health Professions, the University, or the clinical agency. Confidentiality Statement It is the policy of the Loretto Heights Department of Nursing that all individuals coming into contact with Regis University Nursing Students should expect that services rendered and received and any information generated will be held in strict confidence in keeping with all applicable State and Federal Laws. Maintaining the confidentiality of patient health information and patient records is essential and all HIPAA regulations are closely followed by the LHDON and the clinical agencies. Regis University faculty and students shall only access patient confidential information when there is a legitimate need for the information. No one shall allow unauthorized individuals access to confidential patient information. Professional Classroom Behavior - Campus-based and Online Students are expected to be prepared to participate actively in all course-related activities. Etiquette and online netiquette are to be practiced in written and oral communications. Abusive or racist language will not be tolerated. Late Submissions 24

All assignments are to be submitted on or before the due date, unless prior arrangements have been made with the course faculty. Late assignments may be penalized up to five percentage points of the assignment per day for five days and ten percentage points per day for each day thereafter. Cheating and Plagiarism Regis University, the Rueckert-Hartman School for Health Professions, and the Department of Nursing are committed to intellectual integrity. Sanctions may therefore be imposed for cheating (defined as using inappropriate sources of information on a test or other academic work) or plagiarism (defined as presenting as one's own, the ideas, words, or products of another). Such sanctions may include a failing grade for the assignment, course failure, or expulsion of the student from the course and/or the Department of Nursing. Procedures for appeal of any imposed sanctions are found in the Regis University Bulletin. POLICIES FOR HEALTH AND CLINICAL PRACTICUM AGENCY ACCESS Required Department of Nursing Certifications and Immunizations Current cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) certification Include one and two-person infant, child, and adult CPR Documentation of current HIPAA and OSHA training A complete physical examination is required for all students. Pregnant students are required to obtain a physician's written release to participate in clinical activities Students who have been ill or injured are required to provide the Chair of their program written release from their health care provider indicating that they may safely return to all clinical activities. Immunizations Up-to-date immunization record provided by student at student expense must include: Measles and Rubella. TB testing, as often as every six months. Hepatitis-B. First two of the series of three inoculations prior to their first patient care experience. Second injection is given one month after the first. Third inoculation must be given six months after the first injection. A booster injection is recommended every five years, thereafter. Chicken Pox- Varicella Vaccine (or titer value indicating immunity) Communicable Disease & HIV Status 25

Nursing professionals have a fundamental responsibility to provide care to all patients regardless of disease. Refusal to care for any patient based on disease is unethical. The possible exception to this professional policy is a student's pregnancy in which exposure to a particular disease would pose serious risk of harm or threaten the life/health of the unborn child. Inquiry into HIV status is not part of student, faculty or staff application processes. With the acceptance of universal precautions, students and faculty who are HIV+ are allowed equal access to clinical experiences, medical condition and agency policy permitting. Background Checks/Drug Screening Requirements It is becoming common practice for agencies and field placement sites to have policies requiring drug screening and/or criminal background checks for employees, volunteers, and students who are assigned to the facility. Regis University will comply with these requirements in placing students at such facilities or agencies. As a condition of enrollment or continued matriculation in academic programs involving external placements, students may be required to submit to drug screening tests and/or to provide criminal record information at the discretion of Regis University or the agency sponsoring the field placement or internship. Regis University will assist students to understand requirements. However, the responsibility for providing information, and their associated costs, rests with the student and not with Regis University. Failure to submit to such testing or to provide information required as a condition of a clinical placement or internship may result in disqualification from further study at the University. Similarly, results from drug screening tests or criminal records may result in disciplinary action on the part of the University, including, but not limited to, disqualification from further studies at the University. Professional Liability Insurance Professional liability insurance coverage is mandated by the University for nursing students for their clinical, practicum and service learning experiences. Students enroll in the student liability policy for a small annual premium which appears on the student account attached to two designated courses. To minimize liability, no student may begin a clinical experience prior to the start date of the designated course. The student must finish the clinical experience by the last date of the course. If a student finds this will not be possible, she or he must notify the Graduate Program Chair and make special arrangments with the clinical course instructor. Professional malpractice insurance for the student s own practice as a Registered Nurse is strongly encouraged. Smoking As professional nurses, students are expected to set a good example and refrain from smoking during class, seminars, conferences, nursing laboratory activities or activities in any clinical agency. All buildings on the Regis University Lowell Campus are designated as non-smoking areas. DEPARTMENT OF NURSING RESOURCES AND INFORMATION 26

Bookstore The Regis University Bookstore handles a variety of items including books, notebooks, snacks, Regis logo products, and clothing items. Required textbooks may be purchased through the bookstore on campus or online at Student Mail Boxes All campus-based nursing students have a folder, labeled with their name, in the file drawers on the 3 rd floor of Carroll Hall. The folders are used as individual mailboxes for returning papers, or leaving messages. It is an expectation that students will honor each others privacy. Emergency Messages Classroom and clinical activities will be interrupted for messages of an emergency nature only. Please make appropriate arrangements with family, babysitters, employers, etc. so as not to have classroom or clinical activities interrupted. Skills Laboratory and Patient Simulation Center The Skills Laboratory and Patient Simulation Center is composed of a simulated clinical laboratory with audio-visual materials, and a variety of other learning resources. The clinical laboratory is used for psychomotor skill demonstrations, practice and return demonstration. While the laboratory is primarily used during NR 630 Advanced Health Assessment of the Family, it is available for students to practice or review skills throughout the Graduate Nursing Program. Laboratory and audio-visual equipment may not be removed from the Nursing Resource Center without Lab Facilitator permission and sign-out. Usability of the laboratory depends heavily on students taking full responsibility for the use, care and storage of all laboratory materials. Library Dayton Memorial Library provides the Regis University community with a significant collection of resources for research; a pleasant, comfortable environment for study; and a professional staff for assistance. The library subscribes to a number of nursing journals. Interlibrary loan provides access to materials not otherwise available at Dayton Memorial Library. Online access to the Libraries collections is available though the Colorado Alliance of Research Libraries (CARL) system. Article citations from 1982 to the present may be accessed through Academic Search Premier and other journal databases. In addition, faculty may place materials on reserve for student use. The reserve librarian will provide access to such materials. A student identification card or RegisNET account is required for library services. Online and campus-based students may access the Dayton Memorial library through the Regis University website: Fitness Center The Lowell Campus of Regis University has a fitness center located in the Coors Life Directions Center building that is open to all Regis students, faculty, and staff. Fitness Center staff members are available to assist in an evaluation of personal fitness and the development of a personal fitness program. There is a swimming pool available in the field house. Writing Center 27

The Writing Center, located in Loyola Hall, offers service to all students in the Regis community. Writing Center consultants help students to select topics, develop and support ideas with appropriate evidence, conduct research, organize drafts, improve style, learn conventions of standard English, and understand proper use of APA format in formal papers. Personal Counseling Services Nursing education is academically and physically more demanding than many other programs at the University. Students who feel they might benefit from counseling services are encouraged to contact a counselor in the Coors Life Directions Center. Resources to assist with study and test-taking skills are also available through the Life Directions Center. Student ID Cards Student identification cards are issued to all campus-based graduate nursing student at Regis University. This card allows the student to use the Library and other Regis University facilities. The Office of Student Accounts which issues Regis identification cards, is located in Main Hall and is open Monday through Friday 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Computer Laboratory There are several computer labs in the basement of Carroll Hall that are available for use by Department of Nursing students. Labs are generally open from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. When labs are closed, students may call security at to gain access. For Information Technology Help Desk dial NURSING ORGANIZATIONS Nursing Faculty Organization The Nursing Faculty Organization (NFO) By-Laws state that nursing students from each program emphasis may select one to attend Nursing Faculty Organization meetings with the exception of declared executive sessions. Representatives have voice, but do not vote. In addition, at least one student representative may serve on each standing committee: The Curriculum Committee; Student Affairs Committee; and Quality and Evaluation Committee. The Campus-Based Graduate Program Chair helps to facilitate the selection of graduate student representatives. Online students may approach the Online Graduate Program Chair to facilitate their having representation at these meetings. Sigma Theta Tau In 1922 six nursing students at the Indiana University Training School for Nurses, now Indiana University School of Nursing founded The International Honor Society of Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau International, Inc. The name was chosen using the initials of the Greek words storga, tharos and tima meaning love, courage, and honor. Sigma Theta Tau is an organization that recognizes scholarly activities and leadership in nursing through its commitment to the increase of the scientific knowledge foundation in nursing practice. 28

Criteria for individual membership include the demonstration of academic excellence by students enrolled in baccalaureate and graduate nursing programs. Membership is also available, by invitation, to nurses in the community. The Regis University Department of Nursing, with the University of Colorado School of Nursing, forms the Alpha Kappa Chapter-at-Large of Sigma Theta Tau International. Graduate students not already members may be nominated for membership in Sigma Theta Tau by faculty members with membership in the organization. Induction ceremonies for those students selected for membership are held in fall each year. Membership in Sigma Theta Tau is considered a unique honor in the nursing profession. Alpha Sigma Nu Alpha Sigma Nu is the honor society for Jesuit colleges and universities. Alpha Sigma Nu recognizes outstanding women and men who have attained a high degree of excellence in their fields and demonstrate scholarship and academic achievement, leadership in service to others, and loyalty to the Jesuit educational tradition. Deadlines and membership applications may be obtained from the RHSHP Alpha Sigma Nu Advisor and will be posted in the Student Lounge. Nursing Student Advisory Board The newly established (Fall 2005) Nursing Student Advisory Board (NSAB) provides a forum for representatives from each LHDON option. The purpose of the NSAB is to convene and communicate across nursing options, to provide student voice/perspectives on their learning experiences, to improve communications among students, faculty and administration, and to foster advocacy and leadership among students. One representative from each LHDON option will be selected by peer elections. NSAB representatives are expected to report issues and concerns from their option and provide feedback to their peers. 29
