CHANGING BEHAVIOR BY DESIGN. One Layer IUC Tray Designed to intuitively guide evidenced-based practices

Putting Evidence Into Practice. UTI is one of the most common healthcare-associated infections. 1 About 80% are caused by an indwelling urinary catheter, 2 at a cost of at least $1,200 per episode 2 money no longer reimbursed by CMS. 1 Medline worked with nurses to develop an innovative one-layer indwelling urinary catheter (IUC) tray that helps remove several barriers to CAUTI prevention by intuitively guiding clinicians through evidence-based practices. The tray uses the simple acronym ERASE to trigger the next step in CAUTI prevention practices: E Evaluate Indications R Read Instructions and Tips A Aseptic Technique S Secure the Catheter E Educate Patient

E EVALUATE Evaluate Indications One barrier to preventing catheter-associated urinary tract infection (CAUTI) is the overuse of IUCs. 1, 3 An indications checklist on the front of the tray prompts clinicians to identify a valid clinical reason for catheterization. Based on CDC/HICPAC criteria for appropriate IUC use 4 The checklist and online courses through Medline University have helped participating facilities achieve a 15% reduction in IUC use 5 Clinical indications checklist

R READ Read Instructions and Tips The process for inserting an IUC can vary from nurse to nurse. To help ensure clinicians follow a consistent insertion process, step-by-step instructions for aseptic technique are clearly shown on the inside of the tray s label. Clear illustrations guide staff through aseptic IUC insertion Just-in-time education located on outside of tray Front label opens to show insertion instructions

A ASEPTIC TECHNIQUE Aseptic Technique Another barrier to CAUTI prevention is contamination during IUC insertion. Medline s patented one layer tray* intuitively guides clinicians step by step through the insertion process. Components strategically placed to minimize the risk of contamination Promotes consistent use of aseptic technique Contains everything needed to insert an IUC Easy left-to-right flow Clear labeling Total One Layer Tray contains peri-care wipe

Designed by nurses for nurses, the patented one layer tray helps clinicians consistently follow aseptic insertion technique. Color-coded labeling aids product selection process. Clinical indications checklist helps staff decide if IUC is appropriate. Informative Label Step-by-step instructions help guide insertion technique. Items are organized in order of use, minimizing contamination risk. Patient education card helps increase compliance with Joint Commission Guidelines. 6 Patient Education Card Peri-Care Wipe Underbuttocks Drape Peri-care wipe promotes perineal cleansing. Hand Sanitizer Gloves and hand sanitizer foster proper hand hygiene. Fenestrated drape helps preserve sterile insertion. Foley InserTag Fenestrated Drape Alcohol Pad Sterile water syringe holds precise amount of water for full inflation. Lubrication well keeps catheter tip inside sterile tray. PVP saturated swabsticks are provided for each patient prep step. SafeSecure SafeSecure securement device helps prevent urethral movement/traction. Sureprep Foley InserTag prompts timely removal.

S SECURE CATHETER Secure the Catheter CDC/HICPAC guidelines recommend securing the catheter tubing to the skin to prevent movement and urethral trauma. 4 The SafeSecure securement device is designed to minimize urethral traction and be gentle on the patient s skin. Packaged with alcohol and skin prep pads for proper device application Secures catheter tubing, minimizing movement and ensuring compliance Staff Reminder for Catheter Removal Perhaps the biggest barrier to CAUTI prevention is that IUCs are left in longer than necessary because staff forget the catheter is in place. 1, 3 The Foley InserTag * reminds clinicians of when the catheter was inserted and prompts them to review IUC necessity daily. Supports CDC/HICPAC recommendation to document catheter insertion date 4

E EDUCATE Educate Patients About Their IUC When IUCs are medically necessary, it is important that patients receive education about their indwelling urinary catheter. The tray s Patient Care Card* is specially designed to encourage discussion between caregivers and patients about their care. Fulfills the Joint Commission guideline to educate patients on every procedure done while in the hospital 6 Promotes caregiver-patient communication *Featured in Joint Commission s Clinical Care Improvement Strategies: Preventing Catheter-Associated Urinary Tract Infections 7

Reduce CAUTI With A Comprehensive Product Line and Care Solution. IUC Tray Configurations to Meet Every Patient Need Medline provides a broad and deep range of IUCs (Foleys) for our Total One Layer and Standard One Layer Trays. Color-coded packaging identifies the catheter inside the tray, helping to prevent the inconvenience and expense of pulling the wrong tray. Choices include: Add-A-Cath Trays Silvertouch 100% Silicone Foley Catheter Trays Silicone-Elastomer Coated Latex Foley Catheter Trays 100% Silicone Foley Catheter Trays 100% Silicone Temperature- Sensing Foley Catheter Trays Pediatric Foley Catheter Trays ERASE CAUTI Comprehensive Care Solution The ERASE CAUTI Comprehensive Care Solution focuses on standardizing and maintaining best practices through evidence-based intervention bundles.
