4 BORD SLAINTE AN lartt^i;p WESTERN HEALTH BOARD To: Each Member of the Board. Ballina District Hospital - Medical Staff and development as Community Hospital with access by General Practitioners. The Medical Officer at Ballina District Hospital Dr. Thomas Staunton, M.D., M.R.C.P.I., D.C.H., has resigned as from 31st March, 1973 and will take up duty as Consultant Physician at County Hospital, Castlebar on the 1st April, Ballina District Hospital has 101 beds distributed as follows: Medical Obstetrics Paediatric JSt Dr. T. Staunton, during his employement as Medical Officer at Ballina for the past five years has provided a level of service there equivalent to that of a Consultant Physician and its contribution to the hospital needs of County Mayo has been significant. County Hospital, Castlebar is the main acute hospital centre for County Mayo (Population 109,497, April 1971 Census). It has been recommended in the Report of the Consultative Council on the General Hospital Services published in July, 1968 that it be enlarged to a 300 bed general hospital. The existing bed complement excluding the acute psychiatric unit of 44 beds which is operational since July, 1972 is set out below: Actual Recommended in Report of the Consultative Council on ftospital Services. Short Fall Medical Obstetrics Gynaecology Paediatrics General Surgery _S8_ It will at the earliest be some time before the number of beds at the County Hospital, Castlebar can be raised to the required level. Therefore, it is essential that the existing level of services in Contd.

It is recommended that the post of Medical Officer be filled in a permanent capacity without delay, and the terms applicable to this office should be amended to make it more attractive. The salary for the post might be 3,240 per annum and also allow a limited amount of private practice. The opportunity might now be availed of to open a portion of the hospital as a general practitioner unit. This would involve granting access to some beds by general practitioners for the treatment of their own patients and it would be a first step towards the integration of the community care services with the hospital services and would allow Ballina District Hospital to be developed as a Community Hospital. The time is opportune for this proposal as a Group General Practitioner Practice is planned for Ballina to be set up in a premises provided by this Board in the District Hospital grounds. The foregoing proposals may take some time to be cleared at Departmental level, in the meantime, an advertisement for a temporary replacement for Dr. Staunton is being published.
