2 Editorial Contents: Editorial Charity Donation MUESEC Membership ISRRT Membership Access to radiography Journals for SRM members ECR 2014 MID seminar SRM CPD lecture on Gastrointestinal Imaging Upcoming and Past events On the 3rd of December the SRM Annual General Meeting took place at the Professional Centre in Gzira, followed by an open discussion regarding professional issues. During the AGM a detailed outline of the work done in the previous year was given, followed by the election for the new committee One of the final decisions taken by the AGM was to amend the statute to allow for a maximum of eleven members on the committee instead of nine as was stipulated for previous years. Other issues that were also discussed related to issues concerning the administration of contrast media and any possible legal implications, as well as the lack of harmonisation relating to what radiographers are paid within the private sector, and whether this is on par with fees paid to other health professionals. Charity Donation As was done in previous years, last December the society has again presented a donation to a voluntary organisation. A total of 150 euros were donated from the society funds to Caritas Malta. Caritas provides rehabilitation from drug abuse, preventive education and awareness, as well as counselling services. MUESEC Membership SRM is now a registered member with the Malta-EU Steering and Action Committee (MEUSEC). As a member organisation of the Employment, Social Policy and Health Committee, SRM plays an important role in implementing policies towards safeguarding our profession, working conditions and equality. ISRRT Membership SRM has renewed membership with ISRRT in order to remain affiliated with the latest news and developments occurring in radiography worldwide. SRM encourages members to participate in the upcoming ISRRT Congress from the 12 th to the 15 th of June in Helsinki, Finland. Visit for more information. Added benefit for SRM members - Access to radiography journals It is our pleasure to announce that following a partnership agreement that we are about to finalise with the Canadian Association of Medical Radiation Technologists (CAMRT), all paid-up SRM members will now benefit from free online access to the following two journals: Journal of Medical Imaging of Radiation Sciences (JMIRS) Radiography 2

3 All members have been provided with a CAMRT number and password, in order to access these journals. The SRM is absorbing the costs involved to keep this benefit free - it is our token of appreciation for your continued support. What we will ask of you is to encourage other radiographers to become SRM members, and for you to regularly access these two journals and keep yourself informed about latest research and ongoing developments that are continuously evolving within the radiography profession. ECR 2014 The European Congress of Radiology (ECR) 2014 took place at the Austria Centre in Vienna between the 6th of March and the 10th of March. After 20 years the congress can now be regarded as one of the main annual international events in the field of radiology. A wide range of studies were presented during the congress, mainly by radiologists, radiographers and biomedical companies' representatives. Such studies focussed on various aspects of radiology, such as MRI, CT, ultrasonography, planar imaging and others. Also of interest was the main expo in which leading companies have exhibited their latest equipment in the field of biomedicine. There was also a strong participation by Maltese radiographers. The following are the studies presented during the congress: Setting standards for an MRI unit in Malta: a study in establishing image quality criteria for MRI of the knee joint S. Zarb An investigation into the application of optimised CT protocols for head examinations across clinical centres in Malta and Denmark Dr. F. Zarb As from this year, all lectures were recorded and it is now possible to access any lecture delivered at ECR2014 through the facility of ECROnDemand. 4 MID seminar Locally, the MID seminar took place last February, during which a number of studies were presented by various radiographers. The topics which were covered included different aspects of the radiography profession. SRM encourages radiographers to participate in such events in order to share knowledge and best practices. SRM CPD lecture: Gastrointestinal (GI) imaging by Dr. Kristian Micallef SRM strives to organise CPD lectures to increase the knowledge amongst all radiographers, students and other staff members. The first CPD lecture which took place in February was delivered by Dr. Kristian Micallef. The aim of this lecture was to explain and demonstrate the importance of different imaging modalities in both the upper and lower GI tract which were explained separately in two different lectures. Upper GI imaging After the anatomy of the upper GI was reviewed the lecture was divided in two parts: the imaging of the oesophagus following with the imaging of the stomach and the duodenum. The importance of all imaging modalities were reviewed - from a plain Chest radiograph to PET-CT. Moreover, Dr. Micallef mentioned some remarkable pathologies along with their occurrences in the imaging modalities mentioned. Lower GI imaging The imaging of the small and large colon were the main focus in the second lecture. Imaging of the small bowel was thoroughly explained with a distinct mention of CT enterography examination which was newly introduced in our medical imaging department earlier this year. On the other hand, as explained by the radiologist, the large bowels are best assessed by colonoscopy followed by barium enema. However, since the mid-90s CT colonoscopy is being used as an alternative to barium enema. Due to general request, these lectures will be repeated on the 7 th and 14 th April.
