1 Module 4: Hospital Preparedness for MCI (Hospital Emergency Plan- HERP) Session 2: Situational Analysis of Hospital Emergency Plan (Patient Surge Preparedness Plan) (Surge Capacity) Session 1 Key Points: Hospitals concerns in MCM Patient surge Surge capacity Need for ALL hospitals to have patient surge preparedness plan to constantly and continually improve its surge capacity to be ready for MCM!

2 Patient Surge Surge Capacity The key word in our ability to respond to patient surge is surge capacity. Surge capacity can only be enhanced through proper and adequate planning!

3 Hospital s capacity building for patient surge during MCI Our ability to respond to patient surge is preparedness. Preparedness can only be achieved through adequate planning. Hospital s capacity building for patient surge during MCI Adequate planning can only be achieved if it is rooted on existing context of involved facility and surrounding environment. Preparedness Audit Instructions Form yourself into groups by country. Identify one existing real hospital in your country all of you are familiar with.

10 Preparedness Audit Identify and then describe hospital to audit on! Government or private? Urban or rural? Secondary or tertiary? Bed capacity? Number of staff (total / doctors / nurses / allied medical / support / others) Specializations? Departmentalized? Emergency department? Preparedness Audit Start work on the self-assessment checklist! Individual Group Work Reminder: Identify Essential components of a plan! Development and training needs!
