1 Our Speaker / Faculty 2016 Infection Prevention Strategies for ASC s Cathy Montgomery, RN, CASC Moderator & Introduction, President, Excellentia Advisory Group Cathy has over 20 years in healthcare services management. During her position as Regional Manager for Barnes Hospital, Cathy oversaw several physician practices. As Regional Administrator for Novamed, she oversaw operations of the physician practices as well as the ambulatory surgery centers, and optical shops in the metro St. Louis and Illinois areas. Under her direction, a state of the art refractive surgery center was also designed and opened in St. Louis, MO. Cathy s passion has been teaching compliance to CMS Conditions of Coverage, surgery center accreditation and assisting ASC s with their survey readiness. Cathy spends her days assisting clients by conducting onsite mock surveys, assisting with Plans of Correction, writing/editing policies, regulatory compliance training through telephonic consult, webinars and live seminars. Cathy is a CASC and became a new AAAASF surveyor in Cathy will be speaking on: Hazardous Infectious Waste and D.O.T. Regulations Surveyor Panel Discussion Moderator & AAAASF Surveyor Libby Chinnes, RN, BSN, CIC Infection Prevention and Control Consultant IC Solutions, LLC, Mt. Pleasant, SC Libby has had her own consulting company, IC Solutions, LLC for the past 16 years and as formerly coordinator for the Infection Prevention Program at Roper Health System, Charleston, SC. She has worked in Infection Prevention for over 30 years in all settings and is Board Certified in infection prevention and control since Libby most recently co-authored a chapter on Meeting Infection Prevention Challenges in Ambulatory Care Settings in the APIC/Joint Commission Resources (JCR) Workbook, Libby has published several books on the topic, numerous articles, and lectured extensively throughout the country to APIC Chapters, AORN, state ambulatory surgery societies, AVA, nursing home associations and numerous other organizations. She has served APIC in many capacities including on the state and the national level. She is a frequent faculty member in APIC courses: EPI 101, EP1 201, and Ambulatory Surgery as well as extended faculty for AHRQ s Safety Program for Ambulatory Surgery. Libby has also assisted APIC Consulting and numerous healthcare industry corporations with various projects. Her passion and singular goal is making a difference in safer patient care in all healthcare settings and engaging others to do so as well. 2 Deborah Ellis, PhD, MSPH, MT(ASCP), CIC System Director of Infection Prevention and Control Valley Health System, Las Vegas Dr. Deborah D. Ellis received her Ph.D. in Public Health Epidemiology from Walden University. She also holds an MS in Public Health, and MS in Clinical Laboratory Sciences. Dr. Ellis has either grown the germs or chased the germs for over 25 years. She has worked as Director of Infection Prevention/Employee health for the last 10 years. She is currently Corporate Manager of Infection Control and Employees Health Services for one of the nation s premier for profit healthcare cooperation. She s given many lectures in Clinical Microbiology, Clinical Laboratory Services, Infection Prevention and Employee Health. Dr. Ellis is certified by the Certification Board of Infection Control and Epidemiology, and is a member of the Association of Professionals in Infection Control and Hospital Epidemiology (APIC) and The Society of Healthcare Epidemiologist of America (SHEA). She is also licensed as a General Supervisor for medical laboratory personnel by the State of Nevada and is certified as a Medical Laboratory Scientist by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists. She is also a member of the American Public Health Association. Deborah will be speaking on: Communicable Diseases in the Workplace Ashley Mould Homesley, RN, BSN, PHN, CLNC, CIC Systemwide Infection Control Coordinator Scripps Health, San Diego, CA Ashley has 13 years of clinical experience in varied ambulatory and inpatient settings as a Perioperative Nurse and Infection Preventionist. The majority of her hands-on patient care experience was focused on delivering total nursing care to the perioperative patient in varied specialties with a strong focus in Orthopedics, Spine, Pain Management & General surgery. As an Infection Preventionist, Ashley has had shared responsibility for managing and preventing the transmission of communicable diseases in the environment of care and serving as a staff educator on Infection Control principles for several Acute Care Hospitals, Medical Office Buildings & Outpatient Surgery Centers in San Diego, California. Ashley s current role is as an Infection Control Coordinator on a Corporate Surveillance Team for a 5-hospital health system in San Diego. Ashley is a licensed Registered Nurse and holds a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, is a licensed Public Health Nurse, a Certified Legal Nurse Consultant, and Board- Certified in Infection Control and Epidemiology. Ashley is currently pursuing a Master s in Public Health and is thrilled to be expecting her first child this December with her husband of two years, Jason. 3 Chuck Hughes GM/Founder, SPS Medical Certified as a NY State Health Education teacher, Chuck has worked over 25 years in the manufacturing industry in areas of Research & Development, Regulatory Affairs, Microbiology, Marketing and Sterilization Training. A corporate member of AAMI, AORN, APIC, AST, CSA and IAHCSMM; Chuck has extensive lecturing experience to medical device manufacturers and healthcare organizations worldwide. In 2004, he was awarded Educator of the Year by the Inland Empire Chapter of ASHCSP and in 2005 received the distinguished Award of Honor from IAHCSMM. In 2006, Chuck was inducted into the first-ever Who s Who in Infection Prevention issue of Infection Control Today, and in 2008 was selected to the Who s Who in the Ambulatory Surgery Industry. In 2009, he received Speaker of the Year from the California Central Service Association and an Acknowledgement for Exceptional Service and Dedication to the Profession award from IAHCSMM. This past year, Chuck received the Robert Hilboldt Memorial Award which is a lifetime achievement award presented by the Michigan Society for Healthcare Central Service Personnel and Educator of the Year from the Golden West Central Services Association. Kaumudi Kulkarni, MS Manager of Research & Development / Microbiologist Healthmark Industries Kaumudi Kulkarni is the Manager of Research and Development at Healthmark Industries. She is a Microbiologist by training and has her M.S. degree from the University of Georgia. She is a voting member at AAMI and ASTM and is also involved in the worldwide ISO round robin protocols that impact cleaning of medical devices. Kaumudi works with sterile processing professionals, medical device manufacturers, along with the FDA and other professional groups and organizations. She is also actively involved in developing products that help improve patient care outcomes. Kaumudi will be speaking on: 1) What s Required for Handling Scopes Properly in Storage and Handling
4 Robin Novak, RN, CIC Infection Prevention Consultant Quality Assurance Process Improvement Coordinator Ambulatory Surgery Center of Spartanburg Registered Nurse, Certified Infection Preventionist dedicated to disease prevention and high quality healthcare. Strong decision maker who understands the importance of patient, visitor and staff safety following evidence based best practices. Driven and compassionate healthcare professional with 30 years hands-on experience in fast-paced ambulatory surgery center and hospital environments. Accountable and responsible with an additional focus on Quality Assurance Process Improvement. Robin has served as the SGNA Carolina Chapter President, involved in SGNA Practice Committee as well as a Regional Committee member for the past several years. Robin is a current member of Palmetto APIC as well as the national APIC. Robin has been employed at the Ambulatory Surgery Center of Spartanburg since 2006 and held roles of Endoscopy Nurse, Endoscopy Charge Nurse and currently the Quality Assurance Process Improvement Coordinator. I served on the Board of Directors for APIC I am board certified in Infection Control, I have 30 years of experience in all aspects of infection prevention and control in hospitals and ambulatory settings. I am a new surveyor for the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care. My interests include implementation of the CMS Ambulatory Surgery requirements; injection safety; cleaning, disinfection and sterilization in the outpatient setting; establishing an ambulatory infection control program and mentoring. I also am interested in all aspects of hospital infection control and have many years of experience in program development, surveillance, outbreak investigation, infection reduction, education and regulatory compliance. 5 Daniel Pollock, MD Surveillance Branch Chief Division of Healthcare Quality Promotion Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Daniel Pollock is a medical epidemiologist at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). He joined CDC in 1984 and has worked in the agency s infectious diseases, informatics, injury prevention and control, and environmental health programs. In 2004 he moved to his current position as chief of the branch at CDC that is responsible for national surveillance of healthcare-associated infections and antimicrobial use and resistance. Dr. Pollock s clinical background is in internal medicine and emergency medicine. He served as a Clinical Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine in Emory University s Department of Emergency Medicine and worked part-time as an emergency physician at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta from 1986 through Dr. Pollock will be speaking about: CDC s Role in ASC Infection Surveillance and Partnership with the Quality Collaboration on Quality Measurement David Shapiro, MD, CASC, CHC, CPHRM, LHRM Anesthesiologist, Risk Manager Red Hills Surgical Center/ASCA Board Member/ AAAHC Surveyor/Faculty-AORN David Shapiro, M.D. is an anesthesiologist from Florida who has had extensive experience serving as a department chair, medical director and board member of several ambulatory surgery centers. In addition, Dr. Shapiro has served as the national medical director on behalf of ASC management corporations, prior to establishing his consulting practice. His areas of expertise encompass a wide range of disciplines including clinical quality, regulatory compliance and medical liability in the ambulatory surgery arena. He is an active participant in numerous surgery center industry activities, and is a frequent speaker at both state and national ambulatory surgery industry functions. Dr. Shapiro will be speaking about: Anesthesia s Role in Infection Prevention A Clinical Perspective Including QA & Risk Management
6 Donna Slosburg, RN, BSN, LHRM, CASC Executive Director ASC Quality Collaboration As executive director of the ASC Quality Collaboration, Donna Slosburg, RN, helps ASCs improve healthcare quality and safety by developing standardized quality measures, publically reporting quality data and assembling tools for infection prevention. The ASC QC recently introduced a campaign providing ASCs with assessment tools, implementation aids, training materials, monitoring tools and workplace reminders designed to help prevent infection. Ms. Slosburg is active in fostering a positive relationship between the ASC industry and the federal government. She said in a news release from the ASC QC, "As ASCs provide exceptionally high quality and value to Medicare beneficiaries as well as to the Medicare program, the ASC Quality Collaboration looks forward to working in close partnership with CMS to implement quality measurement that leads to improved patient care in all outpatient surgical settings." Ms. Slosburg has worked in the healthcare industry for over 30 years and joined the ASC industry in As a leader in the ASC industry, she has served as a nurse manager, administrator and regional operations coordinator, as well as a senior vice president of surgery operations and national surgery specialist for HealthSouth, one of the nation's largest healthcare services providers. Donna will be speaking about: CDC s Role in ASC Infection Surveillance and Partnership with the Quality Collaboration on Quality Measurement Maria Tietjen, RN, BSN Executive VP Nursing & Clinical Services American SurgiSite Maria Tietjen has over 35 years of experience in the field of nursing and management in the clinical setting. Ms. Tietjen s experience extends across direct patient care, administration and sales. Ms. Tietjen is the Executive VP of Nursing and Clinical Services for 9 ambulatory surgery centers. She is responsible for overseeing all the nursing and clinical managerial aspects, regulatory and compliance, infection prevention and all areas of patient care. In the past, she held the position of charge nurse for the orthopedic department of a 16-room operating suite in northern New Jersey. She directed the nursing staff and was responsible for the equipment, implants and training of the personnel. From 1988 on she has been working in the field of Outpatient Ophthalmic ASC s. Ms Tietjen has been published in magazines and lectures at ASCRS and AAO meetings. 7 Craig Wallace Senior Technical Specialist 3M Infection Prevention Division Craig Wallace is a Senior Technical Specialist in the 3M Infection Prevention Division laboratory. Craig has held a number of positions in 3M Healthcare over the last 34 years, including management and technical roles in medical device and pharmaceutical R&D organizations. He has specialized in the area of sterilization and disinfection for the last 20 years. Craig is the Convener of ISO TC 198 Working Group 4, the international committee responsible for biological indicator performance standards. He is also the Co-Chair of AAMI WG4, the U.S. biological indicator standards group. Craig is active on several other AAMI and ISO standards committees focused on chemical indicators, washer-disinfectors, terminology, process challenge devices, and ethylene oxide sterilization. Craig leads the 3M Sterilization Technical Service and Education Team, and has given lectures on a wide range of sterilization-related topics in North America, South America, Europe, and Asia. Craig will be speaking on: Frequently Asked Questions About Sterilization Christopher F. Wood, MD Medical Director / Physician Owner Northwest Eye Physicians LTD Northwest Surgicare, Arlington Heights, IL Dr. Wood owns a comprehensive ophthalmology practice offering state-ofthe-art medical services, laser eye surgery, comprehensive eye exams and surgical treatment for eye diseases. Dr. Wood obtained his M.D. from the State University of New York at Buffalo in He completed his postgraduate training from the University of Rochester Medical School in 1995, and Loyola University Medical Center in Dr. Wood specializes in cataract and laser surgeries. Dr. Wood treats eye diseases such as diabetes and glaucoma, and also performs eyelid surgery and refractive surgery, including LASIK and ReSTOR lens implants.
