2 welcome What a lot has been happening in NHS Tayside this summer. spectra is bursting with good news stories, so make yourself comfortable and read on MSPs and celebrities were busy in Tayside performing official openings and visiting departments. Minister for Public Health & Sport Shona Robison opened the 1.7m state-ofthe-art PET/CT scanner at the Clinical Research Centre at Ninewells and Mark Beaumont (minus his cycle!) was at PRI to open the new Cornhill Macmillan Centre. New state-of-the-art mental health facilities at Murray Royal in Perth and Stracathro in Angus have moved another step closer with the contracts signed and the first sods cut on both sites. Check out the progress of the new developments on page 10. More than 9,000 people in the UK need an organ transplant that could save or dramatically improve their life. Our feature on page 11 highlights the various events that took place across Tayside during National Transplant Week promoting just how successful transplants are and how crucial it is that people discuss their wishes with those closest to them. In 1985 the shocking images of starving men, women and children in Africa were beamed into our sitting rooms and united the world. Voxpop this issue asks our staff for their memories of Live Aid. If you are fancying a weekend away or a shopping trip then check out the latest offers from the TREATS team. For those who are looking for a little more exercise there is also a staff golf outing to Glenisla Golf Club and mountain biking on offer to tempt you to get out-and-about. spectra is your magazine and we are always looking for ideas and articles so if you think you have something that would be of interest to your colleagues, please share it with us (contact details below). 5 news2u Healthy Happy Communities in Angus The Healthy Happy Communities Project is working with local people in Angus to improve nutrition and food choices. Young people from The Attic in Brechin were presented with certificates to mark successful completion of a six-week cooking course to develop and improve their culinary skills and to equip them with the necessary food preparation and cooking skills for when they leave home. Another project focusing on young people and families health and nutrition was recently launched in Arbroath. The year-long project works with local people to increase their knowledge of health and nutrition for young families. Shona Burge, Healthy Happy Communities Project Manager, said, The cooking tips that the young people have received will benefit them now and in the future and I hope they will continue to develop their culinary skills. The project in Arbroath aims to work with local people to hear what they think is important and what they, as a community, can do to improve and positively influence eating behaviours amongst young families. Waste segregation information is distributed across the organisation to ensure types of wastes are managed correctly, thus reducing waste to landfill. Most areas already have recycling facilities on-site for materials such as cardboard, plastic and cans. Eartha Green is the face of NHS Tayside s energy, waste and carbon reduction campaign. Eartha Green welcomes any suggestions, good ideas that demonstrate good practice and ways of making carbon savings. Send them to Energy Co-ordinator Mai Muhammad at mmuhammad@ nhs.net or call x32099 or The Estates Department has installed energy reduction technologies throughout premises across Tayside, including lighting controls, replacements, and efficient boilers. All new-builds and major refurbishment projects must conform to sustainable construction practices and environmental standards. This ensures that buildings are energy efficient, responsive to user requirements and sensitive towards environmental impact. We are also leading the way in sustainable procurement with the Supplies Department purchasing energy efficient appliances, items with less product packaging and local produce wherever possible. The One in Five travel campaign aims to reduce business travel by encouraging staff to consider using IT facilities like conference calls for meetings. This is available at Ninewells, Kings Cross, PRI, and other locations. Staff are also encouraged to share car journeys, utilise pool cars for business journeys or even cycle. The 333 Bus Service now includes a stop at Royal Victoria Hospital. 4 I spectra Issue 49 Aug - Sept 2010

7 news2u Praise for Ninewells angioplasty service An Auchtermuchty man who lost his father to a heart attack has praised the 24/7 coronary angioplasty service at Ninewells for saving his life. George White (70) suffered a heart attack earlier this year on a Saturday morning and needed to access the service. Picture courtesy of The Courier, Dundee Earlier this year, Ninewells coronary angioplasty service was extended to be offered 24-hours-aday, seven-days-a-week. Previously patients would have travelled to Edinburgh for an emergency procedure out of hours. George said, This 24/7 service will hugely benefit patients as they no longer need to travel as far, at a very traumatic time. Around 275 patients a year will benefit from this 24/7 Ninewells optimal reperfusion service. Consultant Cardiologist Dr John Irving said, We planned this new service very carefully and it has been personally very rewarding to meet some of the people who benefit from our new way of working. 9 news2u Cornhill Macmillan Centre opens Mark Beaumont opened a new centre in Perth which offers specialist care to people with cancer and other life-limiting illnesses. The world record holder of the fastest circumnavigation of the world by bicycle attended the official opening of the Cornhill Macmillan Centre where he unveiled a commemorative plaque. The new facility has been made possible thanks to all those who supported a Macmillan Cancer Support appeal to raise 3.75 million. Mr Beaumont, who lives in Perthshire, said the new centre would make a huge difference to people in the area. He said, The response to the Macmillan fundraising appeal was phenomenal and showed just how much the people of Perth & Kinross wanted a service like this on their doorstep. To be invited to officially open a centre which is such a tremendous asset to this community is a real honour. Sunflower Centre unveils new patient waiting room Staff at the Sunflower Centre at Perth Royal Infirmary were joined by children and their families to open their new-look waiting room. The centre has recently upgraded and improved its waiting room thanks to a very generous donation made by Kirsten Taylor and her family. Kirsten, whose daughter Lauren attends the Sunflower Centre, and other users of the centre and their families helped with many of the ideas of how to improve the waiting area. Children of all ages from Perth & Kinross visit the Sunflower Centre for physiotherapy, speech and language therapy, occupational therapy and podiatry. The centre aims to provide therapy and support for children and their families. Launch of the DNACPR policy The recent launch of the National Integrated Adult Do Not Attempt Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (DNACPR) policy provides new guidance and clarification for staff regarding the process of making and communicating DNACPR decisions. The increased movement of patients and staff between different care settings in Scotland makes a single integrated and consistent approach to this complex and crucial area a necessity. This ensures high-quality care and prevents inappropriate, futile and unwanted attempts at CPR which may cause significant distress to patients and families. Awareness sessions have been taking place across NHS Tayside in the lead up to the DNACPR policy s roll out here. The advice in this policy should be used in conjunction with the NHSScotland DNACPR form, decision-making framework and patient information leaflet, which can all be found at dnacpr l-r Specialist Palliative Service Manager Kristine McAdam, Mark Beaumont, Macmillan s Director for Scotland Elspeth Atkinson and NHS Tayside Chairman Sandy Watson l-r Kirsten Taylor with Lauren, Complex Needs Co-ordinator Gill Sutherland and Head of Paediatric Speech and Language Therapy Jeanette Seaman Virtual wards Patients in Dundee, Angus and North West Perthshire are to be offered the opportunity to be admitted to a virtual ward, allowing them to receive enhanced assessment, treatment and care in their own homes. Support has been given by the three CHP Committees to the virtual ward model, which aims to reduce preventable hospital admissions by identifying people at an earlier stage of their illness, before they require acute care, and helping them and their carers to better manage their conditions at home. The virtual ward sees patients with long-term conditions, such as heart and respiratory problems, who will be assessed by members of a multidisciplinary team of health and social care staff. 8 I spectra Issue 49 Aug - Sept 2010

11 feature State-of-the-art facilities for Tayside and beyond The patients have been allowed the utmost degree of liberty consistent with their own safety [ ]; every attention has been paid to their comfort, and no exertion has been wanting to promote their recovery. This extract from the 1830 Directors Report on The Murray could be applied now to both the new hospital replacing the Grade B Listed Building in Perth, which first took patients in 1827, and to the new hospital being built at Stracathro to take patients from Sunnyside Royal Hospital, which was founded in Over 15 months, detailed discussions have been held between the bidding companies and service users, carers, staff, and architectural and technical advisers, to ensure that the final design achieves the objective of providing state-of-the-art facilities in a therapeutic environment focused on patient recovery. New centre of Stracathro POA/GAP hospital All patients will have individual bedrooms with en-suite shower rooms; the sitting rooms and other day areas have been designed with views in mind; every ward will have a landscaped courtyard and the grounds beyond will also be landscaped. At Murray Royal the buildings will be located to make best use of the slope and the site s magnificent natural views of Perthshire and the mountains beyond. The site at Stracathro in Angus is almost entirely rural, being situated in open countryside, with extensive views. An art strategy has been developed for both sites which will incorporate colour, glazing and stone work during construction. Artworks will be fitted after construction and staff and patients will be closely involved in the decisions on these. At both sites there will be state-of-the-art facilities for General Adult Psychiatry and Psychiatry of Old Age. At Murray Royal there will also be a separate unit for Secure Care, including three wards at medium secure level, which will take patients from the North of Scotland Boards of Grampian, Highland, Orkney and Shetland. For a number of patients this unit could be their home for some years, and every effort is being made to ensure that it feels homely rather than clinical. l-r Liz Forsyth cuts the first sod at Stracathro along with Head of Angus Mental Health Services Bill Troup, Augment Scotland member Eleanor Triblecock and other service users and Augment members The new facilities reached a milestone recently when NHS Tayside Chairman Sandy Watson cut the first sod on the Perth site to mark the beginning of construction. A similar ceremony was carried out at Stracathro by Liz Forsyth, non-executive member of NHS Tayside Board and acting Chair of Angus CHP. Sandy Watson said, The development of these wonderful new facilities, whose design has had so much input from so many people with a real involvement in the two hospitals, underlines NHS Tayside s commitment to the care of patients with mental health problems. There will be 179 beds at MRH and 52 at Stracathro. 12 Tayside marks National Transplant Week feature National Transplant Week (4-11 July) highlighted the importance of getting people to talk about organ donation and sign up to the Organ Donor Register. Various events took place across Tayside during National Transplant Week to promote just how successful transplants are and how crucial it is that people discuss their wishes with those closest to them. A joint event was held by Dundee Healthy Living Initiative and nurses who work in the field of organ donation at the Wellgate shopping centre in Dundee. There were also information and display stalls at Ninewells Hospital and Perth Royal Infirmary, as well as Morrison s superstore in Perth. For this year s National Transplant Week, NHS Blood and Transplant asked people across the UK to take the time to have a Heart to Heart discussion with their loved ones over a meal. Specialist Nurse in Organ Donation June Osborne said, Even if you carry a donor card you should sign up to the Organ Donor Register in order to make a lasting record of your wishes as this tremendous gift can give an exceptional amount of comfort to those left behind following the death of a loved one. It is also vital that you discuss your wishes with your family and friends so that in the event of ever being in the circumstance of being asked, they can be confident in their answer. Anyone can join the Organ Donor Register - age isn t always a barrier to being an organ or tissue donor and neither are most medical conditions. One donor can save or transform up to nine lives and many more can be helped through the donation of tissues. More than 9,000 people in the UK need an organ transplant that could save or dramatically improve their life. Most are waiting for a kidney, others for a heart, lung or liver transplant. Specialist Nurse in Organ Donation June Osborne Around 37% of the Tayside population are signed up to the NHS Organ Donor Register, which is just above the national average. Recent figures show that NHS Tayside s donation rate is sitting at 20.8 donations per million, which is much higher than Scotland s average of 14 per million. However, three people die in the UK every day waiting for a transplant, resulting in over a 1,000 deaths every year. To sign up to the online register visit People can also register by calling the Organ Donor Line on Lines are open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. spectra Issue 49 Aug - Sept 2010 I 11

13 voxpop Feed the Worl July 2010 marked the 25th anniversary of the multi-venue concert Live Aid, organised to raise funds for famine relief in Ethiopia. Organised by Bob Geldof and Midge Ure following the success of the single Do They Know Its Christmas, the event was held simultaneously in Wembley Stadium in London and John F. Kennedy Stadium in Philadelphia. Acts such as Queen, Phil Collins, U2, Elton John, Madonna and Mick Jagger guaranteed an attendance of over 170,000 people over the two venues and a further 2 billion viewers over 60 countries watched the live broadcast. Live Aid exceeded the organiser s expectations of raising around 1 million by generating a staggering 150 million through ticket sales and public pledges with Bob Geldof receiving an honorary knighthood for his effort. With 95% of the world s television sets reported to be tuned into one of the concerts and the success of Live Aid spawning many similar charity events, spectra asked staff to tell us about their memories of Live Aid and whether they have donated to charity or been involved in any fundraising themselves. 14 ld - 25 years on Mark Baillie PORTER Support Services, Stracathro I watched the Live Aid concert with my sisters. It was a really big event and I remember being amazed at Phil Collins playing in London and then playing at the concert in the States. Another thing that stuck out for me about the actual concert itself was that I wasn t too impressed with Sting playing live yet U2 were excellent, but that s only my opinion! I didn t pledge money but I know my parents did donate and I have donated in a similar way over the years to other causes such as Children In Need. Rosanne Wood SENIOR STAFF NURSE Area 6 (Medical Outpatients), Ninewells Yes, I vaguely remember Live Aid. It s the songs you remember such as Do They Know Its Christmas, which was brought out to raise funds. I phone in for fundraising shows such as Children in Need and Comic Relief to pledge sums of money and I took part in the Race for Life a couple of times in 2007 and 2009 as these causes need all the help they can get. The NHS can t provide everything unfortunately. Fiona Nicoll DOMESTIC ASSISTANT Support Services, Stracathro I remember watching Phil Collins at the Live Aid concert. The whole thing I found very emotional, it brought it all home to me seeing all those tragic images of starving children in Ethiopia on the TV in my living room. My parents donated to Live Aid. I don t get involved with fundraising but I do donate to certain charities such as Macmillan Cancer Support. Live Aid was the idea of Bob Geldof, then lead singer with the Boom Town Rats. After seeing a news report on the appalling famine in Africa in 1984, he was moved to write Do They Know It s Christmas with Midge Ure, raising 8m in the process. The success of this and visits to Ethiopia to see where aid was required, encouraged the duo to organise the biggest live rock event ever, and in just 10 weeks! Status Quo kicked off the event with the aptly titled Rocking All Over the World and was followed by a star-studded bill of artists. 15 healthwise 8,000th Keep well check Keep well has now seen its 8,000th free health check carried out in Tayside. A Keep well health check is free and typically takes between 30 and 40 minutes. Weight, height, blood pressure cholesterol and blood sugar will all be monitored if the patient so wishes. The assessments can be provided at GP practices, pharmacies and community centres. This year Keep well community pharmacy checks were launched in Perth & Kinross and have proved a popular and welcome additional service to what is already provided by GPs and as an outreach service. Practices in Arbroath and Brechin are also offering the health checks with more than 200 people being seen since the start of the year. A new self-help support service has been introduced in Dundee to provide treatment for people with mild psychological symptoms such as low mood, anxiety and stress. As approximately one in four GP consultations with patients currently involve mental health issues, the new service will accept referrals for patients with mild psychological symptoms identified through a Keep well assessment in general practice. 8000th Keep well patient David Pacione and practice nurse Lindsey Patton Fruity Friday at Whitehills Staff and volunteers at Whitehills Health and Community Care Centre in Forfar supported World Cancer Research Fund s (WCRF UK) Go bananas on Fruity Friday campaign which encourages people to do their bit to prevent cancer. 16 NHS Tayside team to return to Kenya Raising awareness of dementia in Tayside NHS Tayside marked Alzheimer Scotland s Dementia Awareness Week 7-14 June, by holding a series of events across the region. Members of staff from Dundee s Community Mental Health Team hosted an information stand on the main concourse at Ninewells where staff, patients and visitors were able to go along for a chat and pick up some information and advice about dementia. Some of the Friends of Meru at their AGM at Crieff Hospital A volunteer team of doctors and therapists from Perth Royal Infirmary is planning to return to Meru District Hospital in Kenya to continue their work to improve patient care, share knowledge and provide training to local people. The Friends of Meru are a local charity based in Perth raising funds to work in partnership with local Kenyan people to promote health, housing and education projects in Meru. The Friends first visit to the area was around two years ago when a team of nine staff led by occupational therapist Beth McDowall visited the hospital, which faces a constant struggle trying to cope with the numbers of patients seeking treatment and lacks basic medical equipment. Beth said, One particularly successful venture has been the establishment of a rehabilitation unit. This unit has been a joint project with the hospital where the fabric of the building has been refurbished and the Friends of Meru provided the equipment. This equipment has helped patients who have undergone surgery or incurred injuries recover and return home more quickly and this helps reduce the pressure on beds in the hospital. If you would like to find out more visit Young people learn to Expect Respect The Corner Young People s Health and Information Service raised awareness of domestic abuse as part of a health promotion campaign Expect Respect, which ran throughout May and June. Monifieth High School pupils Alex Di Marco and Laura Carmichael designed and created a window display to support the campaign, which promoted the message that respect is important within a relationship and asked young people to think about how domestic abuse could affect them. Domestic abuse can occur l-r Laura Carmichael in any relationship and in all and Alex Di Marco social groups, races, religions, classes and age groups, and can involve physical, sexual, financial or emotional abuse. l-r Allison Lee and Debbie Stewart of Dundee Community Mental Health Team (Older People), Scottish Dementia Clinical Research Network (SDCRN) Clinical Studies Officer Justine Hudson and Alzheimer Scotland Carer Resource Worker Nadia Sutherland In Perth & Kinross, dementia awareness advisors Fiona Matthews and Karen Durie attended a coffee morning hosted by the Dementia Café in North Church Perth and had information stands at Somerfield in Crieff, Tesco in Blairgowrie and at the annual Volunteer Street Market throughout the week. Staff from Murray Royal Hospital in Perth also did their bit by taking part in a 10k sponsored walk to raise money for Alzheimer Scotland. In Angus, dementia workers hosted an information stand at the annual Angus Show in Brechin, Arbroath Medical Centre, Arbroath Public Library, The Links Health Centre in Montrose, Springfield Medical Centre in Arbroath and Whitehills HCCC in Forfar providing information leaflets to staff, patients and visitors and answering any questions. Ninewells Greenspace project NHS Tayside, Dundee City Council, Forestry Commission Scotland and Maggie s Centre are working in partnership to encourage staff, patients and the public to make greater use of the grounds of Ninewells for health improvement, therapeutic activity, physical activity and relaxation. The first phase of the work was to investigate the existing and desired use of the grounds, including woodlands and greenspace, through staff, patient and visitor surveys. Creating a more welcoming, health-promoting hospital site with more trees, shrubs, paths for walking, benches for sitting and enjoying lunch, spaces to relax and read and rehabilitation trails for physiotherapy patients are just some of the proposed ideas. Others would like to see raised flower beds, herb gardens and natural play areas for children. A safe, enjoyable and high-quality outdoor environment is vital both to promote physical activity and for widespread good health and well-being. Some studies also suggest that the patients view from their hospital window may influence recovery from surgery. If you would like an update on the progress of the work or would like to participate in the next phase of the project then please contact mary.colvin@nhs.net spectra Issue 49 Aug - Sept 2010 I 15

NHS Tayside Associate Director of Change and Innovation Carrie Marr said, The summit offered the opportunity for frontline staff to access the tools and techniques to help them with their quality improvement work in clinical areas. We are looking forward to taking these workshops out to Angus and Perth & Kinross. Learning in NHS Tayside The NHS Tayside Learning Group is made up of learning reps from all staff side organisations, the Learning and Development Department, IT Department and Management. The role of the group was first to put in place a learning agreement that would act as a framework for staff lifelong learning. This was achieved in May 2008 when The Lifelong Learning Agreement and Learning Reps Charter was officially signed by NHS Tayside Chairman Sandy Watson and the Employee Director. The group is also tasked with looking at other ways to provide access to lifelong learning for staff, many of whom have never had this opportunity before, and linking with Knowledge Skills Framework (KSF) and existing training to provide new learning opportunities for personal development for all staff. A series of Lifelong Learning roadshows have been held throughout NHS Tayside with further dates scheduled for the coming months. Realising Potential Fifty NHS Tayside Allied li Health Professionals (AHPs) came together at the Macintosh Hall, Ashludie Hospital to discuss the first national action plan for AHPs working in mental health. Minister for Public Health Shona Robison recently launched Realising Potential: An action plan for allied health professionals in mental health, which brings together the work of the AHPs in partnership with service users and carers, professional organisations and NHS Boards. The action plan is about recognising the value AHPs bring and enabling them to work in different ways to provide better services. The five key areas identified in which AHPs can have the most positive impact are: Early intervention and timely access for service users and carers; rs; Supported self-management and recovery; Promoting physical health and mental wellbeing; Designing and delivering psychological interventions; and Integrating vocational rehabilitation in mental health. The event at Ashludie was also an opportunity to celebrate the significant contribution that AHPs, service users and carers in Tayside made in the development the national action plan, including an accompanying DVD of service users experiences of mental illness. The national action plan is available on the Scottish Government website ( by following the path Home Publications 2010 June Realising Potential: An Action Plan for Allied Health Professionals in Mental Health Social Marketing Health-related social marketing uses approaches from social sciences, public health and health promotion, puts the person at the centre and aims to achieve sustainable behaviour change resulting in real improvement in people s lives. Local initiatives such as Give It Up For Baby and quit4u smoking cessation projects have used a social marketing approach very successfully in order to increase the quit rates in smokers in a defined group. In order to develop social marketing skills, knowledge and capacity among NHS Health Boards, the Scottish Government requested and funded the establishment of a Social Marketing Toolkit for Scotland, led by NHS Tayside. Improvement and Development Manager Catriona Ness has been leading the work with social marketing colleagues and stakeholders to develop a Scottish Social Marketing Toolkit which is currently being piloted in Tayside prior to a wider roll out across Scotland in Training to support the development of local skills has already taken place with a Master Class session for Board members and executive team plus a three day course for practitioners on Principles, Tools, and Techniques. For further information contact catriona.ness@nhs.net Supporting people with dementia Hospital staff across Tayside, including doctors, nurses, allied health professionals and support service staff, are being issued with Supporting People with Dementia, a pocket sized handbook to alert them to the needs of people with dementia. Approximately 10,000 booklets will be distributed to staff across the region and all new staff within NHS Tayside will receive the booklet as part of their induction. The booklet, produced by Alzheimer Scotland, was compiled as it was recognised that many people with dementia access health services, not specifically because of their dementia, but due to other illnesses which can make the person more confused than normal. The booklet enables staff to recognise the symptoms of dementia in any patient accessing healthcare services and highlights areas such as communicating with the person, challenging behaviour and concepts of rights, respect and dignity. NHS Tayside Dementia Consultant Nurse Robert Boyd said, The majority of people accessing medical, surgical wards and outpatient departments are over 65 years of age, and a significant proportion of these will have dementia. Therefore it is important that all hospital staff understand the needs of people with dementia. spectra Issue 49 Aug - Sept 2010 I 19

21 insight At the great emerald bhudda temple in Bangkok, Thailand Name, designation and dept. Katie McGregor Trainee Biomedical Scientist Haematology Laboratory Ninewells Hospital Personal history (an outline of yourself and how you came to be in this job ) I graduated with BSc Forensic Psychobiology (Hons) from the University of Abertay, Dundee in 2006 with an interest of working within a laboratory environment. I took up my first post as a medical laboratory assistant in Biochemical Medicine at Ninewells in the specimen reception before moving to Haematology. I had an immediate interest in the field so approached the Laboratory Manager to discuss becoming a Biomedical Scientist. I was fully supported by the department to complete a Post Graduate Certificate in Biomedical Sciences with the University of Ulster (graduating this year) to bring my degree in line with IBMS standards. In May, I started in my current post in which I will train in the lab and carry out a With work friends Paula, Vicky and Jim in the River Tay after a rafting trip certificate of competence to become a qualified Biomedical Scientist. In my spare time I am always doing something! Music plays a big part in my social life and I go to gigs every week whether it is local acts in a pub, a stadium event or travelling the country (even Europe) to attend music festivals. I go to watch Dundee FC weekly and enjoy all football, in particular La Liga. I also appreciate good food and like sampling new restaurants. Like about current job I find my job very interesting, particularly the field of morphology, and the fact that every day is completely different makes it enjoyable. As I am a trainee I enjoy the everyday learning that s part of my job. All my work colleagues are nice, helpful people and everyone has been extremely supportive in passing on their expertise to help me with my new job. Dislike about current job When I have to work weekends! (Of course there had been a mistake with the lady s date of birth). Achievement most proud of Climbing the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the fact that I do everything I want to do and don t let anything hold me back. Favourite writer I tend not to read regularly but my favourite book is The Magic Faraway Tree by Enid Blyton, so I ll go for her. Favourite music My music taste varies from bands my dad grew up with in the 60s to the music I was growing up with in the 90s, then mix this with a few random artists and Dundee/Fife s local talent and that s my favourite music. Shed 7, The Travelling Wilbury s, Small Faces, The Beatles, Ocean Colour Scene, Fleetwood Mac and The Doors are a few of my favourites. Favourite meal Seafood paella, a rare fillet steak (has to be cooked to perfection), macaroni cheese and my Granddad s mince and tatties. You try to ignore it but it keeps you awake so you have to give up and go. When someone uses the last of something and doesn t replace it. It happens in the lab all the time! When you read about elderly people getting mugged. This makes me so sad and really frustrates me. Most embarrassing moment On my first date with my boyfriend Joe, we were in a club in Dundee and a cargo net fell from the roof and landed on top of me! I fell to the ground and couldn t get out so he had to go and get staff to help. I apparently looked like a captured animal but five years on and he s still with me so it couldn t have been too bad of a first impression! I also once skelped a complete stranger over the head with a newspaper thinking it was my friend. Irritating habit Apparently I talk too much and elaborate with way too much information when telling a story so it takes me a while to get to the point! Do better than anyone else I have an appreciation of food and ingredients and, according to my boyfriend, a natural gift of always choosing the best selection from a menu! 22 e-clips Tayside Training Database for managers Did you know as a manager you can view your staff s Training Needs and Training Record? The Tayside Training Database has the functionality for managers to search for their staff and produce an up-to-date training record. With e-ksf now being fully implemented in NHS Tayside, the Training Database can help support managers with creating a Personal Development Plan for their staff. To view your staff in the Tayside Training Database select Learning & Training from the homepage of Staffnet, click on the Training Database and enter your LDAP username and password. Once in the system follow the instructions below: Click the plus sign + next to Manager and select Training Need The ICE age is approaching The next few months will see NHS Tayside journeying into the ICE age. Nothing to do with global warning, but in fact an IT system that will deliver a new era in electronic requesting and reporting of laboratory and radiological investigations. The ICE (Integrated Clinical Environment) system will replace Central Vision test requesting and reporting systems with the state-of-theart technology as part of the E-Health development program. ICE is an extremely powerful system which will provide users of diagnostics services across Tayside with a tool that will help them use these services to best effect. A lot of the features that, for many years, have been asked for by users will soon be deliverable. These include the ability to request all laboratory disciplines and radiology electronically, embedded decision aides, cumulative and graphical reporting, and much more. The system will not only enable new ways of working and address many clinical governance issues, but will also provide opportunities to allow greater degrees of interaction between the Diagnostics Group and users to enable delivery of more effective services to our patients. The configuration of ICE is now under way, with a plan to have early implementation in renal medicine, ICU and two GP practices by the end of the year, followed by a rapid rollout across Tayside. ICE is already in place in hospitals across the UK and is also expanding into the US. Staff that have named you as their manager will be listed, you can search for staff by Forename or Surname or search for course that staff have attended by the drop down menus. Select the member of staff and click on View Users Training The top of your screen will show you any outstanding training needs that your staff have and the bottom of your screen will show you their full training record as far back as 2005 While it is clear that ICE will provide many advantages to NHS Tayside service providers, it will also be of great benefit to patients. Laboratory and radiological investigations are crucial in the diagnosis and monitoring of disease and delivering good rapid patient outcomes. Systems that enable the right choice of tests to be requested and reported efficiently and effectively will greatly enhance the usefulness of diagnostics services and deliver better and safer patient care. David along with his wife and friends, held a series of fundraising events including a vintage tractor road run, ceilidh, fun day and sponsored walk between the Forth and Tay Road Bridges, which raised a total of Dave donated half of the proceeds to the Royal Hospital for Sick Children in Edinburgh and the remaining 3300 was split between Ward 7, Ward 8, the Sunflower Centre and the orthopaedic physiotherapy department. Dave Dawson (centre) with staff at PRI Cyclathon raises money for antenatal unit NHS Tayside s former Smoking Policy Liaison Officer Alister Barclay came back to Ninewells to hand over a cheque for 200 to the antenatal unit after embarking on a sponsored cyclathon last year. Alister cycled 120 miles from Ninewells to Perth Royal Infirmary then on to Stracathro and back to Ninewells, with staff at all three sites cheering him on along the way. As well as raising money for the antenatal clinic, the cyclathon was an opportunity for Alister to promote NHS Tayside s smoke free hospital policy and encourage others to give up cigarettes and get active. Fun run raises funds Lead midwife Myra Fraser, along with staff from Tayside Police s Family Protection Unit (FPU), raised 1373 for the Dundee Midwifery Unit (DMU) at Ninewells by taking part in the 6k Errol fun run. Rachel Swinley of Tayside Police organised for her colleagues to get their running shoes on and support the unit. One of the team members, Gemma Sullivan, even managed to complete the race in excellent time whilst 25 weeks pregnant. Myra said, Over 1300 was raised, which is a fantastic achievement for everyone who took part. l-r FPU member Gill Ballantine, midwife Issy Roberston, Myra Fraser, Garry Fraser, and FPU members Gemma Sullivan, Ailsa Mackintosh, Iain Ledger and Rachel Swinley Two scalp coolers for PRI Two new scalp cooler machines costing over 18,000 have been donated to Perth Royal Infirmary s oncology day unit to benefit cancer patients by helping prevent hair loss. The machines have been purchased for PRI s new oncology day unit following a charity fundraiser organised by Scone woman Susan Rhodes, who is a PE teacher at Kilgraston School. Scone woman Susan Rhodes originally hoped to raise the sum of 9,200 from a charity 6km walk for one scalp cooler machine after undergoing treatment for cancer herself. Susan s efforts raised over 12,000, and David Glen of The Living Trust, which was set up to improve the lives of cancer sufferers, then decided to donate the balance to buy a second scalp cooler machine.
