CPFT news Spring 2016 CPFT News is produced by Cambridgeshire and Peterborough NHS Foundation Trust (CPFT). We provide integrated community and mental health, learning disability and social care services to 891,000 residents. CPFT is also a designated Cambridge University Teaching Trust and a member of Cambridge University Health Partners, one of only five Academic Health Science Centres in England. HQ address Elizabeth House Fulbourn Hospital Fulbourn Cambridge CB21 5EF T F E communications@cpft.nhs.uk Got a story? If you have a story you d like to see featured in CPFT News, please it to communications@cpft.nhs.uk or contact the editor, Andrea Bateman, on If you have any concerns about any of CPFT s services, or would like more information please contact our Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) on freephone or pals@cpft.nhs.uk Message from the Chief Executive Welcome to our spring issue of CPFT News. We have undergone a big expansion in the last year or so, and now proudly support and care for more than 100,000 people a year all this with a workforce of about 3,400 people. For my executive team colleagues, seeing what our frontline teams experience on a daily basis is crucial, which is why we make regular visits to teams across the Trust. Sometimes those visits aren t easy. Resources are as stretched at CPFT as they are anywhere else in the NHS and, quite rightly, colleagues don t hold back if there is anything they need or if there is something that is blocking the way services can be improved. But, best of all, we get to witness their dedication and professionalism and see first hand how they continue to put the people who use our services at the heart of everything they do. I think it is entirely right that for one night of the year, we celebrate their work. We recently held our fourth annual CPFT Staff Awards (see pages 4 and 5) and it was another inspiring evening in which the incredible work of colleagues was rightly applauded. Elsewhere within the pages of CPFT News, you will be able to find out how two of our ground-breaking initiatives, the Promise Project and the Psychological Wellbeing Service, which have already attracted much interest, have now been shortlisted for prestigious awards. I am very proud of our community connections and in this issue you will be able to read how a couple of different organisations have raised money for the Trust, and how one of our student nurses, Charlie Renforth, has gone above and beyond her role to start a food bank for service users leaving our wards who need emergency help. Finally, you can read about some of our new apprentices. They are the next generation of NHS stars, and having met many of them and heard their ideas I am sure they will be contenders for next year s Staff 2 cpftnhs/ CPFTvideo CPFT Aidan Thomas Chief Executive
Promise project wins national patient award Ascheme run by CPFT which sets out a new mental health care vision has won a prestigious award. The Promise Project recently won the Strengthening the Foundation category at the finals of the Patient Experience Awards in Birmingham. Devised by Dr Manaan Kar-Ray, clinical director of adult services at CPFT, and expert-by-experience Sarah Rae it restates the Trust s commitment to helping service-users towards recovery. It also aims to end the use of physical restraint on mental health patients a pledge that is already attracting international attention. Dr Kar Ray said: We were delighted to win the award because the Promise Project is all about improving the treatment and involvement of people in our care. Our patients are people first and helping them to live meaningful lives must come ahead of just treating or managing their symptoms. There is no place in the Mental health pilot launches in Cambridge New services to help those who experience a mental health crisis have been launched in Cambridge. recovery philosophy for force, so we have vowed to work towards putting an end to the restraint of patients. Restraining techniques are considered a last resort in mental health care and are used by staff only to help contain the distress of a patient who is potentially a risk to themselves or others. CPFT has 20 mental health inpatient wards located at The Cavell Centre, Peterborough, and Fulbourn, Cambridge, many of which offer specialist care for patients regionally and nationally. The project has also been shortlisted for a national Health Service Journal award. organisations, police and voluntary sector providers have put in place a range of new services. They include: What you say about CPFT services The team around J has been the greatest in my experience of working around the UK supporting people with palliative conditions. It is NHS excellence at home care. JET extended to patients A service to reduce unnecessary visits to A&E and hospital admissions has been made available to more patients. The initiatives are aimed at improving the support available for people out of hours and at weekends. Patients will also get more choice in where and how they receive support. Without access to a round-the-clock mental health crisis service, people often have to attend their local A&E department. This is not always the best place for them and it puts more strain on A&E teams. Now commissioners, NHS A First Response Service run by CPFT that will provide assessments in the community out of hours and respond to urgent referrals from emergency services. The Sanctuary, a safe place in the community, hosted by mental health charity Mind, offering short-term practical and emotional support between 6pm and 1am. Mental health professionals in the police control room to provide advice and referral options to police. A system-wide co-ordinator to triage people to the First Response Service and Sanctuary and co-ordinate calls from emergency services. The pilot is part of the Urgent and Emergency Care Vanguard programme, which is funded nationally to test new ways of providing emergency care. The Joint Emergency Team (JET) is now available for anyone over 50 years old and those with long-term conditions. Previously the service was just for people over the age of 65. JET comprises a paramedic or nurse who will visit the person at home within two hours to assess and arrange care for them if they become very unwell and need urgent care, but do not need to go to hospital. It also links to more services if needed, not just JET, such as district nurses or occupational therapists. 3

What you say about CPFT services Thank you so much for your invaluable help, guidance and support over the last few months. The understanding of the brain injury that X had suffered was second to none. Food bank scheme wins quality award Good sports! Building society members have given 300 to CPFT for new sports equipment. The Yorkshire Building Society Charitable Foundation s donation will be spent on a range of activities for patients at the Trust s Cavell Centre in Bretton, Peterborough. The Cavell Centre has multiple psychiatric and older people s wards along with a unit for those with learning disabilities. The centre s indoor gymnasium is used by hundreds of patients every year. Nora O Shea, CPFT s physical activities facilitator, said: There are clear links between improving mental health by improving physical health, so the gym is very well used. We are always looking to purchase new equipment so this kind donation from the Yorkshire Building Society Charitable Foundation is very welcome. Ascheme set up to provide emergency food supplies to mental health patients when they leave hospital has been recognised with an award. Charlie Renforth, a student nurse with the Cambridge Crisis Resolution Home Treatment Service (CRHTT), recently won a Quality Heroes Award run by CPFT after setting up a food bank. The awards recognise CPFT staff who go above and beyond what is normally expected. Charlie said: We provide vouchers for established food banks in Cambridge, but these usually open at certain times, whereas our patients sometimes need urgent supplies when they are discharged in the evening or at the weekend. If they ve been in hospital for a while they may not have any food at home and are sometimes struggling financially. Charlie relies on staff donations to stock the food bank, and has even purchased these herself on occasion, but the team also accepts donations. To donate please contact Charlie Renforth on or charlene.renforth@cpft.nhs.uk CRHTT is a 24/7 community based team based at Fulbourn Hospital, Cambridge, which provides assessment and intensive home treatment for people experiencing a mental health crisis people contact new service More than 5000 people turned to a new mental health service being delivered by CPFT just four months after it launched. The Psychological Wellbeing Service was set up to help those suffering from stress, anxiety and depression. Previously, patients had to be referred by their GPs, but in September people were given the chance to refer themselves to the service. They can still be referred by their doctor. Dr James Clarke, service lead, said: We knew previously that it may have been a big step for people to visit their doctor and say they want help with their mental health, but that barrier has now been removed. Anyone registered with a GP in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough can self refer by completing an online form at or by calling (9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday, excluding Bank Holidays). 6
Colleagues back CPFT in NHS survey Staff at CPFT are increasingly backing the organisation as a place to care and a place to work. 62 per cent say they would recommend CPFT to a friend or loved one, up from 45 per cent in 2014, while 49 per cent say they would recommend CPFT as a place to work compared to 35 per cent in The findings are contained in latest NHS Staff Survey, which was conducted in The score for staff motivation, the number of colleagues who look forward to going to work and are enthusiastic about their roles, also increased to an average score of 3.95 (out of five) compared to 3.73 in The number of colleagues who believe they can make suggestions to improve the work of their team or workplace also improved from 67 per cent in 2014 to 72 per cent last year. Chief Executive Aidan Thomas said: Our staff are our greatest ambassadors. When they recommend CPFT as a place to be cared for their endorsement continues to give our patients increased confidence.there are areas we definitely need to work on, but we are dealing with very high levels of demand while at the same time experiencing cuts to funding. Despite these twin pressures our staff remain dedicated to providing the very best care. Research project looks at integrated care A major research project is being conducted into CPFT s integrated care services for adults and older people in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough. Health Education England is working with six neighbourhood teams to understand how integrated care contracts are managed and what skills, skill mix and team configurations are required for integrated community teams to work effectively. Patients and staff are taking part in focus groups, interviews and observations. The findings will be used to assist Health Education England plan future education commissioning plans, curriculum and integrated care developments. Neighbourhood teams (NTs) are the physical and mental health care hub of the local community for over 65-year olds and adults requiring community services, which launched last year. They include community nurses, mental health nurses and therapists. Samantha Carter, Louise Nicholls and Lee Nicholls, with the syringe drivers they gave to CPFT s Katy Harrison, Shirley Clements, Ingrid Randall and CPFT Chief Executive Aidan Thomas Fundraisers gift to help CPFT patients relieve pain Specialist medical equipment worth more than 5,000 has been donated to CPFT. The Whittlesey-based charity No Gain No Pain UK has handed over four syringe drivers to CPFT after holding several fundraising activities. Syringe drivers help patients control when, and how much, medication they take to control pain and other symptoms. Louise Nicholls, her husband, Lee, and their friend, Samantha Carter, launched their fundraising drive in January last year following the death of Louise s father, David Jarrett, from cancer. Louise said: My dad was a businessman in Whittlesey who was fit and strong. He was always very active. But in the last few days of his life, he had difficulty getting a syringe driver immediately. He had to wait 24 hours, which may not seem long, but when someone you love is in pain, one minute is 60 seconds too long. So after his death we knew we wanted to do something to help others in a similar position. Lee added: We were going to do a bike ride and then just buy one because a syringe driver costs 1,336. But when we told people what we were doing it really connected with them. People have been really kind and so far we ve given four to CPFT s integrated care team in Peterborough. Ingrid Randall, manager of the integrated care team in Peterborough for CPFT, which is made up of district nurses, mental health nurses, community matrons, occupational therapists, and physiotherapists, said: We are incredibly grateful to Louise, Lee and Samantha for the syringe drivers they have given to us, and to all the people who have taken part in their event and donated to their cause. We have about 40 syringe drivers for patients in Peterborough. But ours is a large area, including Fenland, and some patients may need two at a time. Having these extra ones is really welcome and they will benefit a lot of people. No Gain No Pain UK are planning more fundraising activities. For more information visit the website: 7
You re hired! Next generation of apprentices sign up CPFT is developing the next generation of NHS staff with an apprenticeship scheme aimed at giving vital work experience to youngsters. We talk to two apprentices about how the scheme has helped them get onto the career ladder. Harriet MacLennan Recruitment Apprentice I was unsure about further education because of the cost and I didn t know what I wanted to study. I liked the idea of learning while working, so I looked into the NHS apprenticeship scheme. I decided on recruitment because of the variety I support the team with vacancies sorting the job descriptions, recruitment library, helping managers with applications and liaising with candidates. It is a good way to get your foot in the door and I ve worked with lots of different people since I joined six months ago. I ve also gained a qualification. I can t fault the experience. I ve worked in other places, such as in hospitality and retail, but this is the first job I can see has a future and a career path. You don t get paid a lot, but the experience, learning and opportunities are so valuable, that it is worth it. Mitchell Brooke-Jones HR Apprentice I had been doing some temporary work at CPFT when I found out about the apprenticeship scheme and it sounded like a good opportunity. I have worked in corporate support and communications, but wanted to learn more about human resources and workforce development. I now do webpage editing, update staff positions and records and have been involved in the staff survey and helping to organise events. More recently I ve been involved in a project supporting the Trust to reapply for Investors in People status. My next step will be to apply for a HR assistant role and work towards my level 3 apprenticeships and then see where it gets me, but my ultimate goal is to become a director. More than 100 staff who have dedicated their careers to the National Health Service have been honoured by CPFT. Between them the colleagues have clocked up more than 3000 years working for the NHS. At a special ceremony at Burgess Hall in St Ives, they received awards for completing 25 years service, six for 30 years service, and 18 for 35 years service. There were also three staff, Sue Heanes, Alex Khoshmanesh, and Maggie Murray-Smith, who received honours for completing 40 years service.
