2 Run for Fun for Everyone Runners and walkers of all abilities are encouraged to participate in this year s Upland Hills Health Community Run/Walk. Formerly The Nurses Run, this will be the seventh year Upland Hills will be hosting the event, but the first year with its new name. We are hoping to make the event more inclusive and open to people of all ages and all abilities, says Tina White, Director of Marketing and Community Relations for the hospital. This year, the run/walk is designed to encourage everyone to get outside, enjoy the Wisconsin weather, and enjoy walking or running with friends, families, and neighbors. While there will be a digital time display for those challenging themselves to finish under a certain time or to beat a personal best, this year the focus isn t on winning it s on participating and finishing. That s a win in itself, says White. The event s slogan, COURAGE to start, STRENGTH to endure, RESOLVE to finish embodies this focus. Physical inactivity is a major health issue, says White. However, members of our community are finding success walking within our facility, and many have suggested that they would welcome an outdoor path, too. This year s run/walk will generate funds to build an outdoor walking path. Upland Hills Health is invested in promoting a lifestyle that includes regular physical activity. 5 New Sinus Surgery at Upland Hills Leads to an Easier and Faster Recovery Sophisticated new technology is nothing to sneeze at. Anyone who has ever had a bad head cold knows that the pain of sinus pressure can be unbearable. A stuffy, aching head, difficulty breathing through your nose: sinus congestion can seriously ruin your day. Now, imagine you were suffering those symptoms for a prolonged period of time. This kind of persistent sinus problem is called chronic sinusitis, and now the improved treatment for it is available in Dodgeville. Sinus surgery has become a lot more technical in the past few years, says Brad Jebbia, Director of Surgical Services at Upland Hills Health. The sinuses are complicated spaces. Advances in technology have brought vast improvements to the procedure. We now have a machine called the Fusion ENT. It is like a three dimensional GPS for the surgeon performing the surgery, says Jebbia. It s safer, more precise, and allows for surgeons to know exactly where their instruments are in relation to the blockage, as well as allowing them to locate and avoid certain critical structures. In addition to the new machine, another advancement to the field of sinus surgery, a medicated sinus stent that dissolves over a period of time, is providing prolonged relief and healing for patients. Some cases are ideal for an implant, says Jebbia. The implant is inserted after the doctor has opened up the sinus cavity. It expands open and has a steroid that helps keep sinuses clear and clean, decreasing inflammation and helping healing. Difficult recovery is a thing of the past Although sinus surgery is incredibly sophisticated, the recovery process is not. Patients can expect the surgery to last about an hour and a half. They ll recover in the hospital for a few hours afterwards and then go home that evening. 6 Community Spotlight Enriching Soil and Lives Fun Fact: Last year, Noah and his team set aside two plots for food pantries. Here s what they harvested: 232 lbs. 106 lbs. 142 lbs. of tomatoes of peppers of potatoes The Spring Green house Noah McVay grew up in had two apple trees in the backyard, and when a 10th grade biology assignment led Noah to take a closer look at these trees, he basically never stopped. I m the plant guy, he says. It s the truth. In high school, I was the person to ask on plants. I was a walking plant encyclopedia. It would appear that Noah still is a walking plant encyclopedia. A double major in environmental horticulture and agronomy at UW-Platteville (he commutes from Spring Green every day), Noah s enthusiasm for plants is infectious. He was an easy choice in 2012, when the community garden needed a new champion. The agriculture instructor at his high school had been selected to the FAA national committee and needed to step back from some projects. One of those projects was the community garden. She asked Noah to take over. Under Noah s leadership, the community garden has evolved from an extension of the high school to a true community endeavor. They ve recently obtained non-profit status and have a board of directors. It s not a huge amount of people, Noah says. We re really grassroots, but we re trying to attract people from all over. There are seven families currently signed up for plots. Prospective gardeners can obtain one of the fourteen 400 square foot plots by submitting an application to the selection committee. We have all kinds of gardeners, says Noah. People from low income families, a resident plant pathologist, and people throughout the area interested in gardening. But the garden benefits a lot more people than just the families who have plots. Noah and his team work with schools so teachers can use the garden as a teaching resource. From advanced high school classes to kindergarten, the community garden has lessons for everyone. This year, Noah is scouting for a new location for the garden. He s got his eye on a place close to the previous space. We ve got a pretty receptive local government, Noah says. We ll hopefully have a place by March. In his free time, when he s not busy with school or the community garden, Noah likes to you guessed it garden. Plans for his greenhouse include cherry tomatoes, grapes, and cucumbers. And since someone has to pollinate his plants, Noah does his part as a beekeeper. Noah is set to graduate in December of What lies ahead? Perhaps graduate school, or maybe a career with the Department of Agriculture. At this rate, Secretary of Agriculture seems like a pretty realistic future job title for this gifted young man with a passion for public service. n 6 Inspire Health SPRING 2016

7 Employee Spotlight Leadership with Heart Gail Reichling is everything you d want in a housekeeping supervisor. In fact, she s everything you d want in a lot of things: mentor, friend, boss. Why? Gail cares. Gail connects: with her employees, with patients, and with the notion that we re all in this together. She is just beginning her twentieth year at Upland Hills Health. Over the years, she has seen a lot of changes and as a leader for the hospital s sustainability efforts she has made some herself. Housekeeping is a lot more than changing linens and cleaning up messes. Gail and her team consider it their privilege to interact with patients and do whatever they can to improve their day. We might be the only people they see all day who aren t there to poke at them, she explains. Sometimes a thoughtful word or a kind gesture can turn things around. Gail is particularly proud of how her team interacts with residents at the nursing home: They know about their kids and grandkids. You would swear they were the residents own family. But, as vital as compassion and empathy are, kind words and perfectly-timed hugs are just one part of the job. Another point of pride for Gail is the hospital s cleanliness record, which consistently exceeds the CDC s standards for black light inspections. Also, the environmentally friendly practices Gail and the team have put in place are working. Gail has the numbers to prove it. We have a 75% Green Seal approval rating with our cleaning practices, she says and according to Superior Health Linens, we are among the top facilities they service in Wisconsin for linen management. In 2014, we saved $9,863 by making a few changes to increase efficiency. Gail has a lot to be proud of in her personal life as well. She and her husband of nearly 40 years have a beef and dairy operation and consider themselves fortunate to live within a couple of miles of their three children and three grandchildren. For all her accomplishments, Gail is reluctant to take much credit for herself. In fact, what she might be most proud of in her professional life is her staff. You re only as good as your team, she says. And we ve got a really good crew. The simplest little things can make a big difference, she adds. I believe what you can do, you should do.
