Early History - Oshawa General Hospital From early civilization, people gathered in settlements by their collective efforts, have organized institutions to supply needs which could not be met individually. One of the great developments since the early Christian era, has been that of providing means for the care of sick and suffering. Down through many centuries this concern for family and community welfare has been developed until in our time, it built the modern Hospital. Oshawa General Hospital is unique in the fact that its inception was the result of the efforts of a band of devoted church women who first saw and realized its need. In January 1907, sixty women workers from all churches in the city gathered in Simcoe Street Methodist Church and voted to build a Hospital. Later a meeting of citizens endorsed this community project and the Women's Auxiliary was formed. A house-to-house canvass raised $1,000 and on October 5th, 1907, the Auxiliary purchased two and one-third acres of land between Alma and Alexandra Streets. Ahead was a still greater task to raise funds for the building. Another campaign with $10,000 as an objective, raised $18,750 and Oshawa's new Hospital was started in the fall of Since that historic year, through the generosity of prominent Oshawa citizens and public financial campaigns, with municipal and government support, many additions have been made to the original 18-bed Hospital. Over the last half-century through wise guidance by the Directors and Medical Staff, our Hospital has tried to keep pace with the rapid growth of Oshawa and Whitby, with the neighboring community throughout Ontario County. Now with the official opening of a new Wing with 226 beds, Oshawa General Hospital is a strong, vital institution in this industrial community. Nothing is more important than the easing of pain, the saving of life and the preserving of health. 1 ; as. : '^ '

50 Years Growth ORIGINAL HOSPITAL BUILDING On August 13th, 1910, the day of the burial of Florence Nightingale "the Lady with the Lamp", Mayor W. E. N. Sinclair and other prominent citizens were taking part in the opening ceremonies of Oshawa General Hospital; reported by a local newspaper "At two o'clock, people were waiting until the doors were open for the inspection of the hospital before the formal proceedings. Admiringly taking in the well-proportioned cottage building of two stories with attic and basement, which stands 34 by 64 feet fronting on Alma Street, they passed inside and within an hour and ten minutes some 2,000 persons had viewed the interior, and expressed their great satisfaction at the results achieved... At the entrance, Director Mrs. Bailes sat and received gifts of money and kind from the people as they entered, and the large baskets had more than once to be taken away to be emptied of the gifts from generous donors. Dr. J. F. W. Ross, of Toronto, declared the Hospital open saying "I declare this Hospital formally opened for the entrance of patients for care and attention and hope with you to relieve distress and save many useful lives". Comparison of the Hospital records during 1911 (its first year) and fifty years later (1961) reveals a remarkable growth in all phases of its operation Number of Adult and Children's Beds Number of Bassinets 76 Number of Patients Admitted ,021 Collective day's stay of Patients... 4, ,353 Number of Births 14 2,469 Number of Operations 19 9,568 Number of Blood Transfusions 2,419 Number of X-ray films 62,605 Number of Prescriptions Dispensed 204,300 Number of Meals served 565,791 Special Diet Trays 94,479 Number of Nurses (first class of 5 pupil nurses*) 7* 361 Total Operating Revenue $ 5,850 $3,129,717 Total Expenses 6,376 3,135,270 Operating Deficit 525 5,553 Assets land, buildings, equipment 18,750 6,671,491
J. D. STORIE President, Guiding the Hospital through its early years of organization, raising money and construction of the original building in 1909, was Mr. J. D. Storie, a leading citizen and industrialist of Oshawa. He was first President of the Hospital Board; in that office until 1926, when his retirement was received with great regret by his colleagues; all of whom had learned to appreciate his wise leadership, unfailing generosity and sound judgment. Presidents - Oshawa General Hospital J. D. Storie Hon. G. D. Conant, LL.D A. G. Storie T. K. Creighton, Q.C J. A. Morphy Women's Hosptial Auxiliary A pioneer Hospital Auxiliary in the Province of Ontario was organized at Oshawa in January, Ninety ladies were enrolled as members, the first President being Mrs. R. S. McLaughlin. With the original purchase of land for the Hospital site, the Women's Auxiliary, over the past half century, has a proud record of achievement in service. "As an outcome of thankfulness for a step accomplished in church work, grew the conception of unity in service for others. To serve the sick and helpless seemed the truest expression of this sincere desire. This was the beginning of the Oshawa Hospital. Earnest endeavour, unselfish devotion, tact, wise leadership, careful thought as to management, have secured for many sufferers the boon of continued well-being. To those who are associated with this work we record our grateful thanks. To those who have gone on to the Great Beyond, we pay our tribute for work well begun and nobly done" (Tribute at the 25th Anniversary, 1935.) MRS. R. s. MCLAUGHLIN President, Women's Hospital Auxiliary C. Waite E. Marks, Q.C A. E. McGilvray T. L. Wilson

a To care for the ever-increasing number of children in our community and the surrounding areas, a new Children's Floor has been provided, with facilities for 57 patients. Since a great deal of flexibility is required because of the various age groups, more beds, cribs and bassinets were added to provide this flexibility. Three five-bed nurseries and rooms with two, three and four beds are available. Accommodation given each child is determined by the Doctor and Head Nurse on the floor and is usually decided by the needs of the patient. NURSERY and Childrens' Ward The Children's Floor in the Sykes Wing is now used for the care of children, for tonsillectomies and other surgery. In all, we have 88 beds set up exclusively for children. For the treatment of Infectious Diseases, there has been provided a complete Isolation Department for our young patients. Sick children need comfort and assurance. More than ever they require love and affection... a feeling of security and a faith that they will be guided back to health by the tender care of their nurse and professional skill of the doctor.
- * * - : : - * I Operating Rooms OPERATING ROOM This busy and important adjunct of Hospital care has been increased in size by the addition of two operating rooms. We now have two emergency operating rooms in the Emergency Department on the first floor and five major operating rooms for General Surgery; one major operating room for Orthopaedic Surgery and one operating room for Eye Surgery and a Cystoscopy room... a total of eight operating rooms in our main Operating Room suite. In addition, a twelve bed recovery room and necessary ancillary services have been provided. EMERGENCY ENTRANCE RECOVERY ROOM

Physiotherapy A new Physiotherapy Department has been provided and shortly an Occupational Therapy Section of this Department will be in operation. The volume of treatments in the Department has greatly increased over the last few years. This Department will be a valuable adjunct to the rehabilitation of many patients. PATHOLOGY LABORATORY PATIENT TREATMENT GYMNASIUM
Power Station and Laudry With the addition of a new boiler and a second Diesel Emergency Power Unit, the present and future needs of the Hospital for heat and steam also emergency power are assured. The total horsepower developed by our three oil-fired boilers is just under 600 horsepower; approximately 500,000 gallons of oil are burned annually. Our modern laundry will only require the addition of one washerextractor and replacement of two small presses to handle the requirements of the new Wing. More than 17 tons of laundry are processed each week in this modern plant. BOILER ROOM LAUNDRY
MISS E. MacWILLIAMS School of Nursing On the appointment of Miss Elizabeth MacWilliams in 1911 as first Superintendent of the Hospital, there were four probationers in the first nurses-in-training class. Since that time, forty-eight classes have graduated; with a total of 615 nurses receiving their diplomas and taking the Florence Nightingale pledge. The new facilities provided for the School of Nursing include a Demonstration Room with raised seating, complete with six beds for practical teaching. A typical Nurses' Station is also provided off the Demonstration Room. A class room dietetic laboratory, complete with counters, stoves and refrigerators, and a science laboratory with special type benches are also included. A library, clean and soiled utility rooms round out the School of Nursing facilities which already are being used to full capacity. HOSPITAL SUPERINTENDENTS Miss E. MacWilliams Miss B. Bell Miss E. 16 Administration.. W. A. HOLLAND, Administrator The new Hospital Wing, containing 226 beds and other services, embodies all the advanced plans in hospital design and construction... equipped with the most modern and serviceable hospital equipment, including hi-lo beds, nursepatient intercom, private wash rooms for each room, reading and indirect lighting for each patient, ceiling-mounted bed screening curtains. The patient rooms and entire wing have all been tastefully decorated with floors in all areas being terrazzo, to simplify maintenance and reduce any possible source of cross-infection. The corridor and utility room walls are of glazed tile, which will also reduce maintenance costs considerably. An acoustic removable metal pan ceiling has been used throughout for reduction of noise within the building. Oshawa General Hospital now has a well rounded out plant which will provide care for 568 adult and children patients, 76 bassinets for newborn babies and sixteen recovery beds. In all, an impressive total of some 660 patients may be handled quite comfortably in the Hospital. According to the latest Ontario Hospital Services Commission statistics this should handle the necessary acute hospital care requirements of this community until MEDICAL RECORD DEPARTMENT MICROFILM RECORDER
Adelaide McLaughlin Memorial Chapel "Man shall not live by bread alone" is the philosophy behind the provision of a Chapel in the new Wing of Oshawa General Hospital. It is now widely held that spiritual factors enter into every human malady. The Hospital Board, in consultation with the city clergy, has established a quiet little sanctuary, chastely furnished... for worship, meditation, prayer, christenings, communion and fellowship which may become increasingly useful in the work of healing.
