1 Track and Session Descriptions Note- Conference attendance will be limited due to occupancy mandates. Conference attendees will register in a track (Acute Care, Long Term Care/Sub Acute Rehab or Caring for People with Developmental Disabilities or Mental Health Disorders based on their work environment. The same speakers will be consistent throughout the tracks. The sole purpose of the tracks is to facilitate networking within each healthcare specialty and allow discussions to be pertinent to their work setting. All tracks will be exposed to the same equipment and scenarios. The conference will open with a welcome and short presentation highlighting the NYS Safe Patient Handling legislation and current updates. Following the opening presentation will be a theatrical presentation which everyone attends. The focus of this theatrical presentation is how to best protect patients/residents/individuals in our care as well as healthcare workers when equipment, policies or procedures are not optimally available. Following the theatrical presentation there will be a short break while attendees go to their respective track. There will be 3 main categories of patient handling tasks which will be discussed and demonstrated throughout the conference. Discussions will cover a wide variety of equipment choices for all levels of patient acuity. All tracks will attend each of these sessions. Break-out Session Categories: Session 1 - Bed mobility tasks (repositioning, wound care, ADL Tasks, catheter care etc.) Session 2 -Transfers utilizing full mechanical lifts, ceiling lifts and lateral transfer devices for transferring individuals out of bed to a chair, laterally to and from a gurney, responding to an individual on the floor etc.) Session 3 - Special/unusual events (Codes, Car extrications, falls in bathrooms or tight spaces etc,)

2 Each track will be limited to 110 learners. To better meet the needs of the learners and to maximize the learner to instructor ratio, there will be 2 breakout rooms set up for each session category; each room with the same equipment (55 learners per room). The sessions in each of the 2 rooms will cover the same material. Throughout the two days attendees will participate in several general sessions which everyone will attend together followed by attending one of the three types of breakout/hands on session they have not yet attended. At the conclusion of the conference everyone will have participated in each type of breakout session. There will be an opportunity for each track to wrap up their learning experience and to discuss issues that came up throughout the two days and have not been answered. Track Options Note: Tracks are for networking purposes. All attendees will be exposed to the same breakout sessions which will cover the same main scenarios and equipment. Discussions in the break-out sessions may be specific to that track but the main scenarios and equipment options demonstrated will be consistent throughout all tracks. This session will summarize the SPH law and will focus on specific important deadlines. Areas of specific importance such as committee formation will be discussed. Also discussed will be information available regarding the establishment of the Workers Compensation premium credit program for those covered facilities that are in compliance with the Law. List elements of a SPH Program required by the Law List the compliance deadlines Describe why a functional SPH committee is essential to a successful SPH program

4 Let Your Voice be the Safe Choice Theatre for Change, Inc - The theatrical presentation will explore situations in healthcare where Safe Patient Handling procedures/equipment are not readily available for a number of reasons. This presentation will explore gaps in SPH programs and troubleshooting strategies which lead to improved programs and safe working conditions. Identify gaps in your Safe Patient Handling Program Identify alternate equipment/ways to safely complete the task at hand under less than optimal conditions Describe means and procedures to report these gaps Eliminating Risks Through Timely Patient Assessments Robert Guest, Certified MDT MSPT. This session will cover the risks to healthcare workers and those receiving care which are eliminated when timely, accurate patient assessments are performed. The session will show the impact these assessments have on effective SPH programs. The speaker will demonstrate how to assess patients in any setting and identify appropriate equipment choices based on this assessment. The use of a patient movement algorithm which contains criteria to use for choosing SPH equipment based on patient functional mobility will be reinforced. Identify and discuss patient related risk factors Identify and discuss staff risk factors List who should conduct patient assessments and when Identify where and how the patient assessment should be documented Identifying and Mitigating SPH Environmental Barriers Paula Pless, COTA, EES. This session will cover key areas of focus regarding the physical environment and the reasons why they are important. Barriers and risks that have the potential for injury to either patient or healthcare worker will be identified. Participants will

5 identify appropriate equipment based on the environment and will identify process changes needed in order to implement an effective SPH program. List areas of focus when conducting an environmental assessment Define Gap Analysis and how it is used to make procedural changes Identify environmental and procedural barriers that effect SPH programs Hands-On Session Descriptions and Objectives Hands on Session 1: Performing Bed Mobility Tasks - Session Description Risks involved with performing bed mobility tasks including but not limited to repositioning, wound care, ADL Tasks, catheter care etc. will be discussed. Sound SPH principles and equipment will be used throughout this hands-on session. Learners will use SPH algorithms when choosing appropriate equipment options while reinforcing early mobilization. Equipment used in this session will include ceiling lifts, various soft goods including tri-turner, full repositioning sling, split slings, non-friction sheets, limb straps and glide boards. Learning Objectives participants will be able to: Apply SPH algorithm used for repositioning individuals with varying levels of acuity. Use a SPH Mobility Model to determine the appropriate equipment required to enhance mobility List essential components of a repositioning task required to eliminate the risk of injury Hands on Session 2: Transferring individuals from diverse surfaces Session Description This session will cover risks involved with transferring individuals to and from various surfaces and the appropriate equipment options available. The impact early mobilization has on patient outcome will be discussed. Transfers will include bed, bath, gurney and air mattress transfers using full mechanical floor lifts, various soft goods (hygiene sling, ambulatory slings, walking slings, universal slings etc.), gait belts, sit to stand lifts, glide

6 boards, non-motorized stand assists etc. The use of SPH algorithms will be reinforced throughout the session. Learning Objectives Participates will be able to: Describe the association between early mobilization of patients and clinical outcome Describe the clinical aspect of selecting and using SPH equipment for transfers Identify the indications and contraindications for each piece of SPH equipment and SPH soft good Hands on Session 3: Responding to unplanned events Session Description This session will cover risk assessment and movement of individuals during unusual medical event including but not limited to responding to codes, car extrication, falls in bathrooms etc. Appropriate equipment options including but not limited to hover mattress technology, glide boards, full body slings, non- motorized stand assist, non-friction sheets, medsleds, car extrication devices, etc. will be used throughout this session. Learning Objectives- Participants will be able to: Enumerate the steps involved in conducting a safe transfer given unusual circumstances List the associated risks during a transfer of a dependent individual from a vehicle Describe a safe transfer of an individual from the floor
