4 Lack of Situational Awareness (SA) is a National Epidemic Many have traded virtual awareness for situational awareness Our narcissistic society has declined even further with current technology Always been a problem in a pre-technology world

5 So what are some of the negative consequences of reduced SA?

6 Negatives Strategies to counter/mitigate crisis/hazards are rendered useless or significantly reduced in their effectiveness Lack of awareness of the severity of a situation as it develops Reduction of or complete loss of reactionary gap and time- run over by the truck before we even know its there Social isolation contributing to depression and other personality disorder Inability to connect with others and effectively communicate Inability to be present Inability to function effectively and efficiently Inability to experience the fullness of life

7 Complexity of the Problem If it was easy it would have been identified and embraced Difficult since technology has an addictive nature Requires individuals to recognize the problem and have a desire to change Goes against current cultural norms- encourage students and stuff to use the latest APP Goes against many organizational structures and expectations

13 OODA Loop is the key Recognition of the OODA loop as a natural process in all of us is key Realizing that the loops speed can be increased with intentional training Fastest loop generally wins and outmaneuvers OODA loop focuses on brains over brawn Any hazard/critical incident strategy in enhanced by working with the OODA loop model

15 Potential Solutions Being Used Now Most campuses are doing very little to deliberately increase SA within its community Freshman orientation RAD training for female students see something say something campaigns

16 So where do we go from here?

17 Getting Started Build your case gather the data and make the argument Educate your administration Find ways to reintroduce the need if the first time fails Document your efforts Require Administrative buy-in Requires cultural change Ultimately it requires an individual desire to change

18 Solutions for Campus Change Change in organizational expectations- OK to unplug Educate organization about the dangers of lacking SA Support programs and campaigns to increase SA Find fun and acceptable campaigns to foster SA Be in it for the long game not a quick fix

19 Possible Campaigns/Programs Reward staff for unplugging during time off Create live freshman/new student experiences and offer significant incentives to participate and make local friends Create where s Waldo type campaigns across campus with rewards and prizes

20 Campaigns continued Develop program to support campaign thru public art Challenge people to unplug between stops Create events that require people s presence Move away from virtual experiences during times of human interaction- on-line interaction during classroom or group times Develop understanding of the OODA Loop
