1 Member & Family Newsletter Eight Dimensions of Wellness Winter 2017 What is Wellness? Wellness is being in good physical and mental health. Because mental health and physical health are linked, problems in one area can impact the other. Improving your physical health can also benefit your mental health, and vice versa. It is important to make healthy choices for both your physical and mental well-being. The Eight Dimensions of Wellness? The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) defines wellness as overall well-being, including mental, emotional, physical, occupational, intellectual, and spiritual aspects of a person s life. Making aspects of SAMHSA s Eight Dimensions of Wellness into everyday habits can help you live longer and improve your quality of life. Choosing healthy foods, forming strong relationships, and exercising often, may also help people better manage their condition and experience recovery. X BHI Events X Health and Wellness News Wellness Tips With 2017 upon us, you may find yourself setting goals or creating resolutions for the year. If you are reluctant to set goals due to past disapointments, or if you are not sure where to start, try focusing on one simple aspect of wellness each week to develop a healthy self-care routine. Small changes can make a huge difference. Some tips listed below may help start your new year! Manage Stress Regular exercise can decrease stress, improve mood, as well as your self-esteem. Stress management techniques, such as yoga and tai chi, are excellent ways to treat and reduce the physical symptoms of stress. Try meditation and controlled breathing for tension reduction. Prioritize Sleep It is amazing how much more overwhelming things can seem when you are tired. A good night s sleep (or nap!), helps reduce stress and keeps your immune system strong. While there is no magic number for number of hours to sleep, the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute recommends between 7-8 hours for adults. If you have trouble falling asleep, try turning off the TV, computer, phone or any other screen an hour before bedtime. Develop an evening routine to help you wind down from the day. Take a hot bath, drink a cup of tea, crochet, read, or whatever helps you to relax and all asleep easier. Practice Mindfulness Mindfulness involves the regular practice of purposefully paying attention to your thoughts, emotions and actions. Incorporating mindful moments into your day can help decrease stress, promote a sense of wellbeing and self-control, improve focus, and improve your quality of life! Eating: Try chewing slowly and mindfully pay attention to the different flavors and textures of your food. This will help you enjoy your food more and helps to combat mindless snacking due to stress and boredom. Tasks: Whenever you notice yourself starting to worry about things outside of your control, try becoming fully present and stay aware of everything you are doing whether driving, doing the dishes, waiting in line, or whatever it may be. Over time, this may also help to decrease distractions and improve focus. Walking: Try taking a short 5-minute mindul walk each day to help decrease stress. While walking, become fully aware of little things in your surroundings you may not have noticed before. Take a minute to notice the sounds, smells, and weather around you. Doing this can help you feel more grounded and focused. Wellness Speakers and Events BHI presentations and events promoting overall health and wellness.
