1 End of Spring 2014 Nursing Highlights Student Nurses Association Travels to Nashville; HI Chapter Takes Home Two Awards In January 2014, UH Manoa Nursing joined with Hawaii Pacific University and Chaminade University to activate the Hawaii State Student Nurses Association (HISNA) chapter as an official constituent of the National Student Nurses Association (NSNA). Several UHM Nursing students were elected to serve on this statewide board including Vice President Josephine Araki, Secretary Kristy Caneda, Treasurer Paula Tarkington, and Media Director Ashley Burt. The UHM Nursing Student Nurses Association (SNA) was activated in Fall 2013 and is an official chapter of the HISNA. In April 2014, seven 4th and 5th semester UHM Nursing Student Nurses Association (SNA) officers represented the School at the National Student Nurses Association (NSNA) 62nd Annual Convention in Nashville, Tennessee. SNA President Josephine Araki was joined by Vice President Jessica Chadwell, Secretary

2 Kristy Caneda, Treasurer Jaime Cabuag, Project Chair Ashley Burt, Delegate Betty Fletcher and Paula Tarkington. The NSNA Convention featured keynote speakers who discussed leadership through promotion of change and improvements in nursing, focus sessions covering various thought-provoking nursing topics, and the House of Delegates resolutions sessions. Student representatives received three days of NCLEX review and attended an exhibition promoting nursing graduate schools. The HISNA chapter received the State Excellence Award and the Winner s Way Award based on multiple criteria requirements particularly for the largest percentage increase in membership. HISNA President Zachary Drury from Hawai i Pacific University and HISNA Vice President, Josephine Araki (who also serves as UHM Nursing SNA President) accepted a beautiful Nightingale Lamp, a certificate, and $100 on behalf of the HISNA chapter. The Convention was memorable for the students because it provided tremendous networking, educational, and leadership opportunities. The School is proud of our student leaders who have taken steps toward making a positive impact in the future of healthcare!
