ENGAGING PATIENTS AND EHEALTH INNOVATION AT ODENSE UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL METTE MARIA
Outline Healthcare in Denmark Odense University Hospital CIMT Visions Patient Participation Examples MAST
Overview of the Danish health sector 5 regions Public Health Insurance 63 (41) Public hospitals: Beds 3400 GPs (2000 clinics) Private specialists, Pharmacies, Dentists, Physiotherapist, Chiropractors, Psychologists 98 Municipalities - Home care nurses - Nursing homes - Rehabilitation - Prevention
Odense University Hospital (OUH) 1 of 3 major national health care centres Covers approximately 1.6 million citizens Highly specialized Approx employees; OUH has 1200 beds, and hospitalized patients spend an average of 3.8 days in hospital. A new University Hospital in Odense is planned to open in 2021
The task To develop, test, evaluate and implement innovative technologies at Odense University Hospital To establish and carry out research projects within innovative technologies To develop and implement international projects supporting the main strategy To provide necessary documentation for management decisions on innovative medical technologies by means of HTA at Odense University Hospital
An almost 100% digital hospital Electronic Medical Records (EMR) implementation started in OUH has Denmark s largest EMR installation and was the the first Danish university hospital with EMR on all wards. 95% digital in all processes and work flows (lab request, lab results, referrals, etc.) HIMSS Stage 5 recognition for the level of digitalization. Focus on ehealth and telemedicine over the last decade. All hospitals in the region have implemented telemedicine services
Digital vision ICT to support the quality and service objectives, and national and international guidelines. ICT as a support to optimize the workflows in the hospital ICT as a support in development and research at University Hospital.
Being digital isn't going to magically solve the problem
Hospital of the future
Research Patients Health care professionals
Visions The national vision is that the health care sector is: The Health Care Sector of the Citizens Region of Southern Denmark's vision for health care is: "You take responsibility for your health and together we take care of your disease" "New OUH's" vision is: Patients first - through - research - education - development and cooperation."
A National Survey of Patient Experience (LUP) A National Survey of Patient Experience (LUP), is conducted annually on behalf of the five regions. Provides the hospitals and departments opportunities to get systematic feedback from their patients. Possibility to improve the quality of the services and the way we communicate.
Purpose of involving the patients The collaboration with the patient and the relatives give good treatment results and high satisfaction of all parties and is manifested in the culture that characterizes OUH. The patient and family must participate actively in the development of OUH at all levels. The hospital gain insight into the patient and family experiences, wishes and opinions and that these are used in the ongoing quality development. The patients and their families are invited to contribute to the development of ideas and initiating new initiatives at OUH.
Mobile Healthcare Technology an offer for postmenopausal women diagnosed with osteoporosis Aims at empowering women newly diagnosed with osteoporosis to feel well equipped for making decisions about their medical treatment and the ability to demonstrate decisiveness and self-care. The project is divided into three main phases: Identification of needs Concept development Testing the solution
Plug and play-lab
There is, in relation to the future, good energy in being involved in such a project, says a female patient and participant in the first workshop The Health professionals gain important information from listening to the patients when they are brought together for workshops, says the project manager PhD student at CIMT / OUH, Pernille Ravn Jacobsen
Pregnancy Portal Overall aim to assess whether the use of an ehealth tool improved pregnant women s ability to make an informed choice about participation in prenatal screening for Down syndrome
Pregnant women Health care professionals Technical experts Researchers
Tele-interpretation From this scenario to this
Videoconsultations Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) Consultations focusing on lung health, drugs, nutrition, coping and stress management Self-monitoring, involving patients, prevention

MasterMind-Project.eu Target population Adults suffering from mild, medium, or severe depression Both inpatients and outpatients Two different services computerised Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (ccbt) Videoconference for Collaborative care and treatment (ccvc)
Objectives Upscaling the ICT-based mental health care services (in regions/countries where these have been already successfully piloted) Triggering the uptake of the services (in regions/countries new to ICT-based mental health care services) Demonstrating clinical outcomes and economic effectiveness Optimising the organisation of mental health services Increasing the equal access to mental health care Ensuring that the services are safe for patients and do not increase the incidence of adverse events
Test in real environments Involving patients in decisions Getting the best solutions Informing patients about the new hospital Living Labs
The MAST Tool A tool designed to evaluate telemedicine projects The EU Commission felt that the documentation of telemedicine projects was insufficient, which is why many projects never made it past the pilot phase

Need for evidence It is insufficient to provide decision makers with: Descriptions of the development of the service Interview with 4 happy patients Quotes from 5 dedicated nurses A guess of the hospital savings from the company Decision makers want scientific evidence: Published clinical studies of health outcomes Studies of patient acceptability Health economic evaluation and business cases Organizational studies
Step 1: preceding assessment: Are the technology and the organization mature? The right technology for the right patient group Step 2: multidisciplinary assessment (domains): 1. Health problem and characteristics of the application 2. Safety 3. Clinical effectiveness 4. Patient perspectives 5. Economic aspects 6. Organisational aspects 7. Socio-cultural, ethical and legal aspects Step 3: Transferability assessment: Cross-border Scalability Generalizability
Benefits of engaging patients and ehealth innovation Benefits for the hospital: Increased quality Fewer admissions Shorter stay in hospital Optimised use of specialists Satisfaction among staff Benefits for our patients: Higher satisfaction and more independence Increased self-management and empowerment Better information Benefit for companies: Access to work in the health area. Growth jobs.
