The pathway from idea to impact The journey from groundbreaking idea to market is not a straight line entrepreneurs can take many different routes to find resources and mentoring to fit their specific needs. At MIT, there are a number of programs, classes, student groups, and competitions to help entrepreneurs turn their ideas into marketable products. MIT Classes & Coursework Last year, MIT offered more than 60 entrepreneurship courses as well as not-for-credit boot camps. Courses like Product Engineering Processes encourage students to invent a product and pitch it to an audience of potential investors. Makerspaces The campus is home to 130,000 square feet of makerspace that offers tools, training, and networking to encourage students to tinker, prototype, and invent. Revision Even the best ideas need to go back to the drawing board. Student Groups Students organize and run specialized groups to connect with one another based on topic and interest. MIT Programs More than 80 resources at MIT foster entrepreneurship and innovation, including: DesignX Lemelson-MIT Program MIT Enterprise Forum MIT Innovation Initiative MIT Sandbox StartMIT Venture Mentoring Service Martin Trust Center Deshpande Center Legatum Center MIT Competitions Programs like the $100K Entrepreneurship Competition have given rise to over 160 companies, including Akamai and HubSpot. Others, like the IDEAS Global Challenge, encourage social entrepreneurship. Competitions pair inventors with mentors and can be catalysts for growth. Incubators and Coworking Nearby Lab Central and the Cambridge Innovation Center offer startup space and networking opportunities for small companies and local inventors. The Engine The Engine, built by MIT, helps founders create the next generation of world-changing companies by providing access to longterm capital, helping founders navigate the nuanced process of commercialization, providing access to specialized equipment and labs, and creating a community of like-minded individuals to advise leaders of Tough Tech companies. Outside Programs Clinics and programs throughout the Boston area help entrepreneurs. For example, Boston University s Entrepreneurship & IP Clinic advises MIT students about legal issues associated with entrepreneurial efforts. Impact Each entrepreneur s path is unique and presents different challenges. At the end of this nonlinear process, some ideas will successfully reach the market. MIT offers many resources to support the entrepreneurial journey.

What makes Kendall Square such a vibrant innovation ecosystem? Every innovation ecosystem has a number of common attributes that contribute to its success. Kendall Square leverages the power of proximity, and other strengths, to advance innovation and entrepreneurship. All of the right ingredients: University and Research Successful innovation ecosystems arise around a university or a research institution that attracts talented researchers and promotes idea generation. Kendall Square is home to a number of critical research institutions including MIT, Broad Institute, Whitehead Institute, and Draper Laboratory. Density of Industry Kendall Square has a healthy mix of startups, small businesses, medium-sized companies, and major corporations, with sectors ranging from biotech to energy to IT, all within a compact square mile. Community Partnerships Through educational outreach and skills training, innovation economies strive to welcome all neighbors to participate. The Cambridge Science Festival, MITx, Pathways to Invention at the Fletcher Maynard Academy, and The Foundry Consortium (a new STEAM collaboration) are notable examples of MIT s efforts to create community partnerships in Kendall Square. Transportation Movement in and around an ecosystem is important for strong participation in the economy, facilitating access to work and play. Kendall Square offers convenient transportation options, including MBTA subway and bus lines, shuttle buses, and several bike share stations. Catalysts and Conveners With so many ideas in such close proximity, it is essential to have organizations dedicated to connecting all of the different threads. The Kendall Square Association brings a mix of businesses, nonprofit organizations, and community members together to promote vibrancy in Kendall Square. The Engine, MIT Startup Exchange, Cambridge Innovation Center, and Lab Central also bring local entrepreneurs together to solve global challenges. Sense of Place In addition to physical structures and institutions, it is also important that public areas within an innovation ecosystem feel like inviting places where people want to congregate and collaborate.

What s next for Kendall Square? Pathways to Invention Kendall Square Initiative (These numbers are approximate) 3 acres of open space 450 graduate beds & 290 housing units 888,000 sq ft of commercial space 115,000 sq ft of retail space Volpe Redevelopment (These numbers are approximate) 2.5 acres of open space 1,400 units of housing including 280 affordable & 20 middle income 1.7 million sq ft of commercial space 100,000+ sq ft of retail space 57,000 sq ft museum MIT museum The Foundry Consortium

Sustainability MIT strives to be a thoughtful partner within its local and global communities, to disseminate great ideas, and to mobilize the appropriate actors to implement sustainability solutions. By using the campus as a test bed and incubator, MIT generates new ways of responding to the challenges of our changing planet. This framework complements the Institute s long history of engaging with our local community to help find solutions to our shared sustainability and climate change challenges. Campus Students, faculty, and staff work to create solutions to common challenges that both serve MIT s needs and have potential applications for the broader community. Campus City The challenges of sustainability are interconnected and require deep collaboration with our neighbors. We are committed to enabling sustainability solutions that impact Cambridge, Boston, and beyond. Globe Globe MIT aims to develop structures, processes, and solutions that are accessible and globally applicable. City Sustainability Across Campus 25 There are currently 25 offices, labs, initiatives, and student groups dedicated to sustainability, including the MIT Office of Sustainability, MIT Energy Initiative, Concrete Sustainability Hub, Working Green at MIT, and the MIT Water Club. 132 MIT offers 132 courses related to sustainability, including an undergraduate minor in environment and sustainability. $200,000 In grants allocated by the inaugural Campus Sustainability Incubator Fund, managed by the Office of Sustainability. The recipients all use the MIT campus as a test bed for research in sustainable operations, management, and design. 49% Of all materials collected and removed on campus were recycled - about 5,500 tons in the last year. $350,000 In utility cost savings were discovered when undergraduate researcher Steven Amanti found that unused venting hoods in laboratories were not being fully closed. Using time-lapse photography and a series of equations to assess consumption, Amanti built a case for a small behavioral change that, in one of our most energy intensive buildings, enabled a 17% drop in utility consumption. This is an excellent example of how creating a culture of sustainability on campus leads to ingenious solutions that reduce waste.

Access MIT: Increasing commuter options Launched in September 2016, the AccessMIT initiative seeks to increase flexible, affordable, and low-carbon transportation options for the MIT community by providing all benefits eligible staff and faculty with embedded MBTA passes in their MIT ID. How does the MIT Community get to Campus? 8% AccessMIT s incentives resulted in an 8% decrease in parking transactions at MIT s commuter lots in the first year. 24% of Institute staff now use the MBTA on a regular basis. Walked 15% Other 3% Drove alone entire way 18% 2,552 The number of Cambridge residents who work on MIT s Cambridge campus 22% of all staff. Many employees walk or bike to work. Bicycled 16% Carpooled 5% Took public transportation 42% 232,339 In 2017, MIT s Hubway stations had a combined 232,339 visits from cyclists. Of the 10 most utilized Hubway stations, 3 are located on MIT s campus. Switching it up: Bruce s Story AccessMIT is changing the culture of commuting at MIT by incentivizing MBTA and Commuter Rail usage. Bruce, an engineer at the MIT Central Utilities Plant, previously drove into Cambridge from Gardner, Massachusetts. His 57-mile commute was simplified after he chose to drive to Alewife Station and take the T through Cambridge. Avoiding 18 traffic lights and 6 miles of gridlock, he now has time to visit the Kendall Square Farmer s Market and participate more fully in the perks of city life. He even racks up steps on his fitness tracker as he walks to the plant from the Kendall T station. Photo: Francesca Schembri

Community Engagement MIT cares deeply about its neighbors. The Institute s students, faculty, and staff are committed to supporting the City and nonprofit partners in addressing the needs of our local community. Below is a snapshot of MIT s impact and involvement. MIT s Community Engagement Approach Financial Support Through the Community Service Fund, MIT supports both local nonprofits and student-initiated community service projects. Board Participation MIT employees offer their time and experience to dozens of City of Cambridge and nonprofit boards, committees, and task forces. Facility Use The Office of Government & Community Relations (OGCR) hosted over 65 public events for nonprofits and the City of Cambridge during the fiscal year. Service Work The Priscilla King Gray (PKG) Center promotes volunteerism and civic education among MIT students and supports efforts to connect the MIT community with area nonprofits. Sharing Expertise OGCR frequently connects researchers on campus with community partners. For example, the Massachusetts Department of Public Utilities works with the MIT Energy Initiative on grid modernization and designing utilities of the future. #1 Taxpayer MIT continues to be Cambridge s number one taxpayer, accounting for 14.7% of the city s total tax revenue in The Institute paid $54.9 million in real estate taxes and over $2 million in payment in lieu of taxes. $ $ 2,213 Events in 2017 at MIT that were free and open to the public. Find what is happening on campus at calendar.mit.edu Through volunteerism, direct donations, in-kind contributions and the use of campus event space, MIT collaborated with more than 130 local nonprofits in $137M In direct economic contributions to the city. From the Cambridge First purchasing policy to taxes and fees paid to the City of Cambridge, MIT s direct economic contributions have steadily increased over the last 5 years.

Examples of neighborhood partnerships Affordable Housing As part of the Kendall Square Initiative and Volpe Redevelopment projects, MIT is building approximately 1,700 units of housing, including approximately 320 affordable and 20 middle-income units. K-12 Education MIT works closely with Cambridge Public Schools and local nonprofits to support K-12 students. In hiring a K-12 outreach administrator, the Institute aims to strengthen the relationship between its programs and Cambridge s K-12 curricular needs. Arts & Culture Through the Creative Current partnership with the Community Art Center, MIT has enlivened pedestrian walkways on Main Street with three vibrant murals during construction projects while supporting youth artists from The Port neighborhood. The Environment Led by the Office of Sustainability, the Institute is performing a rigorous campus-wide climate change vulnerability assessment. Working with the City of Cambridge, the assessment hopes to inform next steps to mitigate against future impacts of climate change. Civic Advocacy In 2017, MIT collaborated with local organizers to host the inaugural Data for Black Lives conference. Over three days, participants discussed ways to use data science to create concrete and measurable change in the lives of black people. Helping the Homeless In 2018, the Institute celebrates the 25th anniversary of the tripartite agreement among MIT, the City of Cambridge, and CASPAR that established CASPAR s Emergency Services Center at 240 Albany Street on MIT s campus. Meaningful Spring Breaks Organized by the PKG Public Service Center, 11 MIT students participated in a week-long immersion program to learn more about climate change and its impacts in New England. Working with the Coast Guard, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the Blue Hills Observatory, and the US Naval War College, participants had an opportunity to learn about climate change preparation from resiliency planning to humanitarian responses. As part of their work, students produced videos for Cambridge Community Television describing what they learned and unpacking the political realities making climate solutions more difficult.
