16 The Power of Public Participation Kauneonga Lake is a small hamlet in the Town of Bethel with a one-block Main Street. In 2004, the hamlet was virtually a ghost town. The Bethel Local Development Corporation applied under the first New York Main Street funding round and was denied. CASE STUDY: kauneonga lake

17 The Power of Public Participation Shortly thereafter, Sullivan Renaissance helped convene a series of COMMUNITY VISIONING WORKSHOPS to get public input on pressing needs in the community. Through the visioning workshops, the appearance and condition of the buildings were identified as the number one priority! CASE STUDY: kauneonga lake

18 The Power of Public Participation The BLDC re-applied, and was awarded $200,000 in 2006 to assist with the renovation of 8 buildings. In 2007, the community won a $50,000 Golden Feather Grant, which was used to leverage another $50,000 new sidewalks and lighting. 20 The Power of Public Participation Using a design charrette format, the public gave input on possible recreational uses for several properties on Main Street that were part of a flood buy-out program. Within two years, Margaretville had secured over $80,000 in grant funding and was recognized with the Governor s Award for Quality Communities Excellence (2004). CASE STUDY: MARGARETVILLE

22 Patience and Persistence Roxbury began its planning for Main Street Revitalization in 2005 and has been going not stop ever since. In coordination with the MARK Project, the town has received two Main Street awards, two RARP awards for anchor buildings, and three NYS DOS grants for local waterfront revitalization for a total of $1,300,000. This sparked individual building and business owners to tap into additional resources for restoration of these valuable historic buildings. CASE STUDY: Roxbury

23 Patience and Persistence The renowned Roxbury Motel, now in the throws of its 5 th expansion project, used Main Street Revitalization activity to help leverage further private investment and three awards from ESD. CASE STUDY: Roxbury

24 Patience and Persistence Owners of The Enderlin Building used NY Main Street funds in combination with HOME for Rental Rehab and low interest loans from the Southern Tier Downtown Revitalization Fund and Catskill Watershed Corporation CASE STUDY: Roxbury

25 Patience and Persistence The Village of Fleischmanns continues to work on their revitalizations efforts especially in the post Hurricane Irene environment. Over the past 8 years, in coordination with the MARK Project they received $275,000 in NYMS funds, $200,000 in RARP funds, $110,000 in EPF funds for their village park, and an additional $90,000 in smart growth funds for beautification projects. Remember, this doesn t happen overnight, and if volunteers burn out, so does the project -- there will be times when frustration takes the front seat. Take a step back and take time to reenergize. You have to be in it for the long haul! CASE STUDY: Fleischmanns

26 Patience and Persistence Main Street Revitalization is a long term commitment. Once it starts, it never stops. So, be prepared to pass your project onto the next generation. You ll be happy you did! CASE STUDY: ANYWHERE USA
