Responsible Mining, Responsible Workplaces Sustainability Report
Company Profile Barrick is the world s largest gold producer, with a portfolio of 26 operating mines, advanced exploration and development projects located across five continents, and large land positions on some of the world s most prolific and prospective mineral trends. The Company also has the largest reserves in the gold industry, with about 140 million ounces of proven and probable gold reserves1. In addition, Barrick has 12.7 billion pounds of copper reserves and 1.07 billion ounces of silver contained within gold reserves as of December 31, Barrick has long been acknowledged not only as the largest gold miner in the world, but also as an exceptionally socially and environmentally responsible organisation. Business Position Barrick recently moved offices from 199 Bay Street Toronto to 161 Bay Street Toronto, Ontario. The move resulted in certain assets needing to be decommissioned and disposed of. Specific Situation Barrick planned to move its offices from the CIBC tower in Toronto, Ontario to its new state of the art LEED accredited offices in the TD Tower at 161 Bay Street, Toronto, Ontario. In an effort to ensure the most productive, esthetically appealing and ergonomically advantageous working environment, the decision was made to work with Amovo Workplace Environments to outfit the new offices. This decision resulted in a large amount of No Longer Needed (NLN) office furnishings, primarily workstations and a few private offices. Barrick placed a large amount of this product in storage while the balance remained in their former location at 199 Bay Street, Toronto, Ontario. Barrick had to find a timely method of disposing of these assets that was financially viable yet would not result in the product going to landfill, damaging Barrick s environmental record. Barrick was introduced to the rouse program through amovo to ensure ethical divestiture of that product. The rouse program, managed by amovo and executed by csr eco solutions, provided Barrick with a sustainable solution for their surplus furnishings. In bringing the rouse program into action, not only were surplus assets kept out of landfill, their redistribution provided quantifiable social and environmental benefits in-line with Barrick s CSR and Environmental policies and objectives.
Barrick and its employees already donate thousands of hours to local organizations. There was no question that we were thrilled to work with amovo and csr eco solutions. - Anne-Marie Vcelik, Barrick Gold "amovo is determined to not only meet our clients needs but also to anticipate and ensure we provide solutions that go beyond fit and function. Our relationship with csr eco solutions enables amovo to assist our clients to further their CSR and environmental objectives when faced with decommissioning furniture and office assets. Furthering the relationship with csr eco solutions enables amovo to deliver a branded and completely transparent solution. - Tim Baxter, amovo
Furniture into Funding Through the ROUSE Program, a value of $23,000 was recovered from the surplus furniture. The money was then donated to the David and Jonathan Project who utilized the funds for microfinance loans. The loans were made available specifically to groups in Peru and Africa nearby to some of Barrick s largest mining operations.
Furniture for Charitable Foundations 5 Local Charitable Groups also benefited with the donation of desks, tables, whiteboards, shelving, cabinets, boxes of office supplies, and a TV. The $2,685 value of the donations was extremely helpful in providing these local organizations with the tools to succeed. From a charity that provides shelter to a charity that provides food, this donation will help many people n the area. Barrick employees recognize the benefits their local charities provide to their communities and contribute their time, money, and assets in order to support and help sustain them.
These donations have gone to help......build a House. Habitat for Humanity Canada is committed to helping low-income families caught in the vicious cycle of poverty. Currently, over 1.5 million Canadian families do not have safe, decent, and affordable housing Through the programs, families in need of an affordable place to live are provided with the hand up of homeownership.
These donations have gone to help......feed a Family. The Parkdale Community Food Bank provides supplementary nutritional support to those who, through unemployment, disability, or economic marginalization, are unable to meet all of their dietary needs.
These donations have gone to help......fight Disease. Sickle Cell Disease is a hereditary blood disorder that affects people in ways that can be felt and seen, such as causing pain and swelling. It also affects people in less obvious ways, such as slowing physical development and damage to internal organs like the liver, kidneys, and spleen. It causes stroke, sight problems, acute chest syndrome, priapism, blindness and premature death among many more.
These donations have gone to help......fight Poverty. Aga Khan Foundation Canada is a non-profit international agency that supports social development programs in Asia and Africa. AKFC works to address the root causes of poverty: finding and sharing effective and lasting solutions that help improve the quality of life for poor communities. Their programs focus on four core areas: health, education, rural development and building the capacity of non-governmental organizations. Gender equity and protecting the environment are integrated into every program.
These donations have gone to help......fulfill a Dream. The Centre for Dreams is a day program dedicated to providing a curriculum designed specifically for adults living with a developmental disability. They provide these individuals with educational programs and social skills training with the hopes of integrating them into the community, both independently and confidently. They work to ensure that these individuals will become productive, independent, dignified, and respected members therein.
These donations have gone to help......fund a Future. The Lending Journey was created to help peoples of the global south improve their social and economic conditions. Most of the women they work with are poor and often have very little education. These women are enterprising and, given the opportunity, prepared to work hard to create small businesses.
Thank You! - Centre for Dreams Donations of corporate surplus assets have truly made an impact in the community. Not only have charities, schools, and non-profits been given the tools to succeed, they know that their local corporations are behind them...in words and in actions. Redistribution Summary TOTAL VALUE OF DONATIONS: $ 25,685 Redistribution Highlights: Tons 146 workstations & offices Less than 1% waste
Environmental Responsibility According to the US EPA, diverting 99.7% of Tons from the landfill is a similar Green House Gas (GHG) reduction equivalent of... Annual greenhouse gas emissions from 5.7 passenger vehicles Carbon sequestered by 739 tree seedlings grown for 10 years CO2 emissions from 67 barrels of oil consumed
