TOTAL PROJECT COST $43, Pl #1 PHONE NO RESEARCH OBJECTIVES: (List objectives to be accomplished by research grant) To develop a decision support tool to be used by farmers to help them estimate the optimum seeding rate of a new variety. Inputs into this tool will include variety characteristics (plant height, tillering capacity, presence of selected genes that affect photoperiod responsiveness and plant height) and the potential yield of the environment where the crop will be planted. An additional objective is to develop an efficient way to characterize new varieties as to their tillering potential. Attach a 2-page detailed i cussio of importance of the proposal to wheat profitability; how study complements previous research in area; procedures to e used; and ompetency of the research group in achieving research objectives. 3 January 11, Jochum Wiersma, PI Sponsor: North Dakota State University Primary Funding: MN Wheat Research & Promotion Council Project: Developing an environment specific decision support tool to help growers determine an optimum seeding rate for new wheat varieties Jochum Wiersma's responsibilities for this two (2) year grant will be to host one of the three locations at which the field trials will be conducted that is used to develop the decision key. The field trials consist of two parts. a. Factorial combination of varieties (eight) and seeding rates (four) using a RCB with 4 replications. b. Hill plots of the same eight cultivars in which single seeds are placed and the number tillers are counted. Budget Justification: 2017 Plot charges Undergraduate Labor 2018 Plot charges Undergraduate Labor Total Budget $500 $500 $5.000
4 Minnesota Wheat Research and Promotion Council RESEARCH PROPOSAL GRANT APPLICATION Project Title: Developing an environment specific decision support tool to help growers determine an optimum seeding rate for new wheat varieties Importance of this project to the profitability of wheat producers: There are many new varieties of spring wheat that are released each year. Recent and past research has shown that the optimum population for a variety can vary significantly from the overall extension recommendation. Conducting research to determine the optimum population for each new variety, however, is not practical as this type of research is expensive, time consuming, and repetitive. Furthermore, recent research has clearly demonstrated the impact that the environment (average yield, latitude, moisture, etc.) can have on the optimum population of a spring wheat crop for maximum yield. This research will attempt to develop a decision support system for growers so that they can more accurately predict the optimum population for their selected variety based on the characteristics of the variety and the anticipated environment in which it will be sown. Procedures: Experiments will be established in three locations in North Dakota and Minnesota with varying yield potential based on likely and historic rainfall. Treatments will consist of a factorial combination of varieties (eight) and seeding rates (four). The varieties to be used will include recently released varieties that vary for key genetic and phenotypic traits, specifically semi-dwarf genes Rht-B and Rht-D, photoperiod gene Ppd-D, straw strength, and tillering capacity. In addition to obtaining information on the best seeding rate for maximum yield for each variety in each environment, we will collect data on the tillering capacity of each variety, measure plant height, and obtain data on lodging. Ultimately, we hope to develop a decision tree with this information that will generate a recommendation for the best seeding rate to be used. We believe that the following phenotypic and genotypic traits will impact the recommendation: tillering capacity of the variety; presence of Rht-8 and -D genes; photoperiod sensitivity; propensity to lodging; and plant height. Additionally, the typical average yield of the farm or area will also be considered and has the potential for impacting the ultimate seeding rate to be recommended. Since tillering capacity of a variety has been found to be a key determinant of the optimum seeding rate of a variety within a specific environment, we plan to determine the best way to characterize a variety for its tillering capacity in the most resource efficient way. We plan to use single seed spaced plantings and counts of tillers in plots of varying seeding rates. We will examine the relationships between tiller numbers in spaced planted situations and tiller numbers under varying seeding rates. Once an effective methodology is developed, we plan characterize all the varieties that are in the variety testing programs of ND and MN so that this information can be used to assist growers in their variety selection and in the determination of a "best" planting rate. Regional linkages to other research activities: There is the potential for linking with the on-farm research group in Minnesota, provided that they will be implementing any planting rate work like they did in We have a pending proposal that will fund research in several of the RECs in North Dakota which will augment the location data we obtain in eastern ND and MN. List current or potential other funding sources for this project: We have requested funding from the ND Wheat Commission. The decision on funding is pending. Research Group: Joel Ransom, Jochum Wiersma, Grant Mehring and a PhD student yet to be appointed, along with the research specialists at NDSU and support staff at Crookston. Relationship to past projects: This is research that follows previous work that was recently concluded and was part of Grant Mehring's PhD thesis. Estimate the budget requirements: We are requesting $21,500 per year for two years to complete this project. The justification for this request is as follows: 1- Partial graduate student funding of $9,000 with associated fringe benefit of $270 (3% rate for graduate students). The other portion of the funding for the graduate student has been solicited from ND Wheat. The graduate student will provide day-to-day leadership in the data collection, will do the preliminary analysis of the data and draft the research reports that are required.
5 2- $4,230 - Supplies and Services -This will cover the cost of tags, stakes, bags, small research equipment, fertilizers, shipping of seed, tools and fuel for tractors and combines. 3- $3,500 - travel, which will cover the motor pool cost of vehicles used to transport people and equipment to the various locations and travel for the Pl and or graduate student to a professional meeting to present the findings of the research. 4- $2,500 - Sub-:Contract with UMN Repairs and maintenance. This will cover the cost of repairs to tractors, trailers, combines and other lab and field equipment. References: The most recent and relevant publication is that of the thesis of Grant Mehring: Mehring, G.H Determining Optimum Seeding Rates for Diverse Hard Red Spring Wheat (Triticum aestium L.) Cultivars. PhD Dissertation, NDSU, Fargo, ND.
