SECTION 1: Organization Information Name of Organization: Governor Henry Lippitt House Museum, a Preserve Rhode Island property Mailing Address: 199 Hope St., Providence, RI Name of Project Contact Person(s): Carrie Taylor, Director Contact Information: Phone: Fax: ctaylor@preserveri.org Type of Organization Public (town, city, municipality, special district, government agency) X Private (citizen, non-profit) Other (please explain) Description of Organization and Mission: Heir to one of Rhode Island s leading textile manufacturing families, Henry Lippitt ( ) designed and supervised the construction from of the brick and brownstone house at 199 Hope Street in Providence. Occupied by generations of the Lippitt family before becoming a museum in 1993, the house is a three story, thirty
room Renaissance Revival villa. Embellished with elaborate interior decorative finishes, colorful stained glass windows, ornate woodwork, and surviving original furnishings, the house is a time capsule of Victorian design. The Museum offers guided tours, special exhibitions, educational programs, concerts, and supports original research. Guided tours explore Lippitt House as an example of how cultural and social changes accompanying industrialization impacted one family and the architecture, furnishings, and even the mechanical systems in their high-style house. The Mission of the Governor Henry Lippitt House Museum, a National Historic Landmark, is to preserve the house s structure, collections, and grounds as a benefit for all, and to make it an ongoing and enjoyable source for public education, scholarship, and engagement. Generations of Lippitt family members, both men and women, served their community through volunteerism, civic engagement and political action. Lippitt House continues this tradition by supporting active citizenship and civic engagement with the goal of positively impacting our community. To increase capacity to accomplish these goals, the Museum actively pursues partnership with other non-profit and educational institutions. On average, how many individuals does your organization serve per year? Lippitt House Museum directly serves an average of 2,350 individuals annually through guided tours, educational programs, concerts, community events and special events. How did you hear about the CPC? blast SECTION 2: Project Description Title of the Project: Study of the Fine Art Collection at the Lippitt House Museum Project Location (Address, City, State, and Zip): Lippitt House Museum, 199 Hope St., Providence, RI General Project Description (you may attach a longer narrative if necessary): Using original archival sources, compile a comprehensive catalogue and research report describing the scope and contents of the Lippitt family s fine art collection. Potential Scope of Work/Tasks for RWU CPC 1 (you may attach a longer narrative if necessary): Review prior research (1981 MA thesis, collections management database, curatorial files) to compile what is already known about the family s fine art collection. Use primary documents (family account books, correspondence, diaries, inventories) and period photographs to acquire new information about the fine art collection, both works currently in the Museum collection as well as those that have dispersed. 1 CPC project services are performed by students in support of their educational experience. Applicants shall understand that any deliverables generated through an accepted project are intended to provide conceptual information only to assist design and planning and as such are not intended, nor should they be used for, construction or other project implementation. Professional and/or other services may be needed to ultimately implement a sponsor s desired goals.
Create an Excel spreadsheet to track all information regarding each work (provenance, historic display locations, artist bio sketch, current disposition, etc.). Write a research report summarizing the contents of the Lippitt family fine art collection. Report should include recommendations for re-installing works to more accurately reflect Lippitt historic interiors. Also include a list of the missing works that were removed from Lippitt House and are not part of the current Museum collection. What will be the final product output for this project? (survey, website, design plans, drawings, etc.) The final product will be a report summarizing the research findings as well as an Excel inventory cataloguing the fine art pieces owned by the Lippitts from , both works in the current Museum collection as well as those no longer at the house. This research will be incorporated into the Museum s new furnishing plan that will guide re-installation of the rooms and direct future museum acquisition activities. Proposed Project Schedule (when the tasks/project needs to be completed): Early in the semester, staff and the student will develop a research plan and design the Excel catalogue spreadsheet. Using resources provided by Lippitt House Museum, student will first become familiar with prior research on the fine art collection (1981 MA thesis, collections management database, curatorial files). The next step will be to work with staff to identify available primary documents and photographs both in the Museum s collection as well as local archives. Throughout the term, the student and staff will regularly discuss project progress, any unanticipated difficulties and revise the work plan to guarantee the final research report and Excel spreadsheet are completed by end of the semester. The student will present an electronic copy of the Fine Arts Excel spreadsheet and research report with recommendation at the end of the term. Please provide the names and contact information for any staff members or volunteers who will be playing a primary role in the proposed CPC project. Carrie Taylor, Director ctaylor@preserveri.org What resources/previous work would the CPC be building upon that you already have completed? (Please select all items that are applicable) X Strategic Plan Marketing & Communication Plans Additional organizational documents Preliminary photos of the site/project Maps Previous research Survey results Architectural or building plans What active support would your organization be able to contribute should your project be selected? X Funding Volunteers Staff time Consultants Other (please list)
SECTION 3: Project Outcomes Please describe how this project will benefit your organization and the advancement of your mission: Researching collections is an integral part of collections preservation, one of the primary components of the Museum s mission. The products from this research project will be incorporated into the Museum s new furnishing plan that will guide re-installation of the rooms and future museum acquisition activities. Re-creating historic interiors that reflect the Lippitt family s occupation of the house from will contribute to the overall sense of place that makes the historic home a special community space. By identifying the family s fine art collection, a more complete picture of the Lippitts will emerge. Identifying the works they acquired to furnish their home will result in greater understanding of how they presented themselves to their peers and other members of the community. Questions can be answered such as: Were they patrons of local artists? Is there specific iconography represented in the family collection? If so, what messages were the family directly or indirectly conveying about their identity and place in society? Please describe how this project might benefit the overall community, including specific groups that could benefit from this project (i.e. target populations, neighborhoods, specific town/city/region). Lippitt House has been a part of Providence s East Side neighborhood for 150 years. Its preservation was accomplished through the efforts of generations of Lippitt family as well as members of the local community. By preserving this house and sharing it with the public as a museum, it is an example of how historic preservation maintains a sense of place for a neighborhood. Through research, the Lippitt Museum can present a more accurate picture of what life was like for the Lippitt family as well as a better understanding of Providence s growth as a center of industry in the 19 th century. This helps local community members have a better understanding of Providence today and its industrial legacy. Please explain why you have chosen to seek assistance from the RWU CPC with your project request, instead of undertaking the project using fee-for-services from a paid professional: The Museum has a small staff and the small operating budget does not allow for hiring outside consultants for Museum research projects. Please describe how this project will benefit RWU students. The project will provide a hands-on opportunity for students to conduct original research using primary sources and original works of art. The student s will have an opportunity to exercise technology skills by organizing their research by building a custom Excel spreadsheet. The research efforts will have a reallife impact on future museum installations, acquisitions and contribute to the ongoing documentation of the Museum s fine art collection. The research and writings skills utilized in the project will help prepare students for future curatorial work in other museum settings. This is valuable practical experience employers are looking for when they enter the job market. SECTION 4: Financial Information What is your organization s annual operating budget? Please include a copy of your most recent budget with the application. Lippitt House Museum s 2014 Annual Operating Budget: $301,240 What are your major sources of funding? The Museum s revenue sources consists of endowment income, rents from on-site apartments, event rentals, individual giving and competitive grants.
How much funding from your annual operating budget is set aside for this project (if any)? No additional operating funds are budgeted for this project outside of staff time to supervise student progress. SECTION 5: Private Sector Involvement Have you or your organization discussed the project with practicing professionals (e.g. architect, engineer, planner, consultants, etc.)? (please circle one): Yes / No If no, please explain why: Carrie Taylor, Lippitt House Museum Director, has a MA in Public History - Museum Studies and over 20 years of curatorial experience. She will directly supervise the research project. SECTION 6: Supporting Documents Please include the following items when submitting your application: X Budget for the current fiscal year X List of current Board members Copies of supporting resources identified in section 2 as needed to support your application
