Mr. Stewart is fulfilled in having a family based business and good employees because he is afforded the opportunity to bring people on his team not only to work but grow as individuals. Becoming an entrepreneur requires a dedication to your work/product along with other factors. Therefore, Mr. Stewart leaves a word of advice for DBEs and small businesses alike. Having a good relationship with a bank is vital because you have to have working capital to pay workers as well as stay afloat, said Mr. Stewart. 5 Money Management April 2018 Deonte Oscar, Assistant Vice President Community Bank 140 East Metro, Flowood, MS There are many ways to successfully manage money. One of the most critical methods to managing money is building a budget. Here are three important concepts to consider when building a budget: 1. Keep Track of your spending 2. Identify your income and expenses 3. Analyze cash flow and look for ways to increase your income and decrease expenses Income are monies received from your respective companies, odd jobs, other sources, etc. Expenses are bills, transportation expenses, entertainment, etc. Cash flow is the relationship between income and expenses. Fixed expenses do not change from month to month (For example: Rent and auto loan payments). Flexible expenses might change from month to month (for example: food and gas). It is very important to have knowledge of your cash flow needs; this in essence keeps you in line from month to month allowing you to have a clear understanding of what you can and cannot afford. Once you have a firm grip on cash flow needs, you can then begin to save additional funds. Saving is very critical when managing your money; it allows you to establish a rainy day fund. As a business owner there will be times when you may become strapped for cash due to slow payments from customers, unexpected expenses, taxes owed, etc. A rainy day fund helps get you through those times in which you are strapped for cash. In summary, there are several options to successfully manage money; however, it is important to first establish a budget and closely analyze cash flow needs. Credit Good credit is an essential tool for small business growth. Many small business owners are of the opinion that once a business is established it is automatically separate from the business owner. Actually most business owners are directly tied to his or her respective company. It is important business owners understand that establishing and maintaining good personal credit can be vital for the success of their company. When a business is first formed the company has not been able to establish adequate credit; therefore, the bank has to rely heavily on the owner of the business when making credit decisions. If your credit is not satisfactory it can have a negative effect on loan approval. Business owners must keep in mind how personal credit can have a long-lasting impact on the growth of their company.

6 April 2018 OSHA Safety Tip of the Month! WORKPLACE VIOLENCE What is workplace violence? Workplace violence is any act or threat of physical violence, harassment, intimidation, or other threatening disruptive behavior that occurs at the work site. It ranges from threats and verbal abuse to physical assaults and even homicide. It can affect and involve employees, clients, customers and visitors. Homicide is currently the fourth-leading cause of fatal occupational injuries in the United States. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries (CFOI), of the 4,679 fatal workplace injuries that occurred in the United States in 2014, 403 were workplace homicides. However it manifests itself, workplace violence is a major concern for employers and employees nationwide. Who is at risk of workplace violence? Nearly 2 million American workers report having been victims of workplace violence each year. Unfortunately, many more cases go unreported. Research has identified factors that may increase the risk of violence for some workers at certain worksites. Such factors include exchanging money with the public and working with volatile, unstable people. Working alone or in isolated areas may also contribute to the potential for violence. Providing services and care, and working where alcohol is served may also impact the likelihood of violence. Additionally, time of day and location of work, such as working late at night or in areas with high crime rates, are also risk factors that should be considered when addressing issues of workplace violence. Among those with higher-risk are workers who exchange money with the public, delivery drivers, healthcare professionals, public service workers, customer service agents, law enforcement personnel, and those who work alone or in small groups. How can workplace violence hazards be reduced? In most workplaces where risk factors can be identified, the risk of assault can be prevented or minimized if employers take appropriate precautions. One of the best protections employers can offer their workers is to establish a zero-tolerance policy toward workplace violence. This policy should cover all workers, patients, clients, visitors, contractors, and anyone else who may come in contact with company personnel. By assessing their worksites, employers can identify methods for reducing the likelihood of incidents occurring. OSHA believes that a well-written and implemented workplace violence prevention program, combined with engineering controls, administrative controls and training can reduce the incidence of workplace violence in both the private sector and federal workplaces. This can be a separate workplace violence prevention program or can be incorporated into a safety and health program, employee handbook, or manual of standard operating procedures. It is critical to ensure that all workers know the policy and understand that all claims of workplace violence will be investigated and remedied promptly. In addition, OSHA encourages employers to develop additional methods as necessary to protect employees in high risk industries. For more information please visit
