3 Electronic Exchange of Social Security Information (EESSI) EESSI an IT system that will help social security bodies across the EU exchange information more accurately, efficiently and securely. All communication between national bodies on cross-border social security files will take place using structured electronic documents (SEDs). These documents will be sent via the EESSI solution to the correct destination in another EU country. Staff in social security bodies will be able to find the correct destination in another EU country using a directory of national bodies.

4 Background and scope of EESSI EESSI is a key innovation of the modernised rules on social security coordination (Regulations (EC) No 883/2004 and No 987/2009) applicable since 1 st of May Article 4 of the Regulation (EC) No 987/2009 introduces the requirement for electronic exchange. EESSI will cover all branches of social security listed in Article 3 of Regulation (EC) No 883/2004. EESSI will allow for exchanges on social security coordination between 32 countries: 28 EU Member States, as well as Iceland, Lichtenstein, Norway and Switzerland

7 EESSI Recent developments and current status During 2014 the project successfully completed its initiating and planning phases. Since January 2015 the project is progressing in the executing phase. The executing phase covers the development of 3 subsequent iterations of the IT platform called Pilot Builds, before the Integration Ready Release and the 1 st Production Ready Release will be developed. Pilot Builds 1 and 2 were successfully developed and tested, currently the testing of the 3rd Pilot Build is underway.

8 Next steps and national planning Delivery of the Integration Ready release of the central EESSI Platform is planned by the end of 2016, the 1 st Production Ready Release (PRR) is planned for mid Member States will have 2 years to implement and connect their national institutions following the PRR is declared fit for purpose, planning is already underway. Following the end of the transitional period as defined in Decision E4 of the Administrative Commission, EESSI will allow for full electronic exchange of social security coordination related data.

9 Language requirements in Social Security Coordination Article 76(7) of Regulation (EC) No 883/2004 stipulates that documents in all EU languages should be accepted by national authorities The standardised forms approximately 320 Structured Electronic Documents (SEDs) will be made available in 24 languages: EU official languages apart from Irish, with Norwegian in addition The IT solution will facilitate the work of clerks by making use of CEF etranslation
