What is IMS? IMS is an initiative started in 1995 Industry-led International research and development (R & D) Established to develop the next generation of manufacturing and processing technologies. A platform for industrial research share experience, best practices, and develop a common global vision Each region has a host for IMS supports the Regional Secretariat and local activities The organisation is directed by the ISC comprises delegations from each Region each delegation is led by a Head of Delegation (HoD) comprises delegates and government observers The Regional Secretariats are the backbone they implement program objectives make recommendations to their delegation to help steer the organisation Inter-Regional Secretariat (IRS) is the administrative arm of IMS is directed by the Chairman and the ISC.

4 Why do research in IMS? IMS projects advanced manufacturing science resulting in reduced costs, increased sales, reduced waste, reduced resources requirements, and others. 5 The value of IMS and some players IMS Why should we/europe be involved? Because it is not about carelessly giving away European know-how A stringent IPR regime protects the knowledge of IMS participants but rather about a global win/win approach to collaborative R&D Solving problems of global reach: e.g. sustainable manufacturing based on world-best technology Paving the way for business to compete in world markets: e.g. standards, semantics, common approaches Demonstrating Europe s technological potential: e.g. technology providers demonstrating their technology in joint applications with users in other IMS regions

6 When does an IMS project make sense? Global Manufacturing represents 25% of world GDP (Gross Domestic Product) with over 20 million enterprises, and 28% of world employment 1) As a co-operation between competitors To do pre-competitive R&D To join forces in tackling problems of global dimension: e.g. minimising waste, energy efficient production & distribution 2) When partners aim at global visibility & presence Exploiting opportunities to enter new markets & build global business partnerships IMS makes sense if it is win/win! How does IMS work for FP7 participants? 10 Information Society Standardization System (ISSS) What is CEN? The European Standards Committee (French acronym) European Standardization Organizations recognized by EC A non-profit association members are national standards bodies (BSI, DIN, AFNOR, IPQ, etc.) Now 30 members EU plus EFTA (i.e., Iceland, Norway, Switzerland, and Liechtenstein) Creating the European single market, in partnership with: CENELEC - electro-technical standards ETSI electronic communication standards CEN/ISSS (Information Society Standardization System): Marketing title for CEN ICT activities

11 How CEN/ISSS works? CEN operates two main sorts of consensus group: Technical Committees - made up of national delegations The end products are formal European Standards (EN) or Technical Specifications (TSs) Workshops and Focus Groups open to any interested party CEN/ISSS activities are mainly Workshops Workshops are: A bottom up process subjects needed by the market A public process - Business Plans on web, open for comment to all Results by consensus of the participants (and usually a public enquiry on web) Technical specifications, guidance material, best practice, information Results become CEN Workshop Agreements (CWA) published by CEN International Organization for Standardisation

12 What is ISO? ISO (International Organization for Standardization) is the world's largest developer and publisher of International Standards. is a network of the national standards institutes of 157 countries, one member per country, with a Central Secretariat in Geneva, Switzerland, that coordinates the system. is a non-governmental organization forms a bridge between the public and private sectors many of its member institutes are part of the governmental structure of their countries, or are mandated by their government other members have their roots uniquely in the private sector, having been set up by national partnerships of industry associations. ISO enables a consensus to be reached on solutions meet both the requirements of business and the broader needs of society. How much time should one allow between the submission of an abstract and a full proposal? It is mandatory to submit an abstract The abstract should be submitted after a viable consortium has been formed It should not take long time for consortium to submit a full proposal once the abstract is endorsed. What help is available for drafting IMS intellectual property rights (IPR) provisions? An IPR guide is available from your Regional Secretariat. Your Regional Secretariat can also refer you to a "Help desk" for specific advice as required A "model" consortium cooperation agreement, including IPR provisions, is also available What is the average size and industry/academia mix for an IMS project? Depending on the nature of the research, IMS projects have between 10 to 40 partners There are usually 3 participating Regions. Typically, 60 percent of partners come from industry and 40 percent from university/research organizations.
